[Rachael's POV]
"September 18. Tomorrow..." I thought as I searched my drawers to find a pair of jeans. "I'll be sixteen years old. What difference does it make though? Dad will probably be too drunk to even realize what day it even is." I let out a sigh. "Sixteen years in this dump. Living with a father who could care less about anything more than his beer and his next slut of the week," I mumbled to myself as I pulled my favorite black hoodie over my head. "You b*****d!!" I heard someone yell from downstairs. I knew immediately Dad must have woken up with another hangover. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and applied my eyeliner then carefully made my way downstairs to the kitchen. I went to the drawer where my father kept his medicines and pulled out a box I had marked with my dad's initials. I set out a couple of Tylenol and a glass of water, along with a note telling him to take them before eating, on the table like always. "Your stupid a** father punched me! This is all your fault!!" someone squealed. I turned to see Marina, Dad's latest "girlfriend", in the doorway pointing an accusing finger at me while holding her stomach with her other hand. "Sure, sure," I replied mechanically as I waved a hand in the air. "Just try to make sure my dad takes those," I said, pointing to the pills on the table. "Yeah, yeah. Don't you have somewhere to be, you little wench?!" Marina said angrily. I walked out the door and began making my way to school as she continued to rant. "What a day this is going to be," I thought satirically as I rolled my eyes and drew my coat closer to me.
