Those who do not fear their blade are not fit to wield it.~ Shuhei Hisagi
DEMOX: ch. 13
Chapter 13: The Behemoth

We walked on past the cave, and as we did, a warm breeze came from it. Ashley walked ahead quickly as I looked inside, slowing my pace a bit. As I did, I heard a loud snarl from deep within the darkness of the cave.

“What was that?” Ashley asked scared out of her mind now.

“It’s our cue to *GTFO! *Tonzura koite!!” I said as we began to run. Footsteps shook the earth and I had to look back like dumbass! It was a behemoth demon! Ashley made the same mistake by looking back and she let out a scream trying to go faster. But it was already too late.

The beast revealed its head and front legs. Its gigantic head was its deadliest weapon. It had short, stubby horns and from its lower jaw, sharp tusks protruded straight up. It was covered in shaggy, matted light brown hair. The behemoth freed itself from the comfort of its cave to reveal the entire body, which was at least twice the size of an elephant.

It slammed its enormous, clawed paws on the ground raising a dust cloud around its feet and roared. The monster’s breath wreaked a putrid, rank, stomach turning, stench of old blood and rotten meat. Tat combined with not looking where I was going caused me to fall backward as it progressed toward us.

I remembered the bow and arrow in my hands and aimed for its head, though I ended up with a sloppy shot. The arrow hit just outside the right eye and stuck there. Not bad for a shot so poorly prepared. It thrashed its head to and fro trying to shake the arrow loose but it was lodged in too deep.

Figuring this out, the behemoth charged wildly and I scrambled to my feet. I snatched Ashley behind a boulder as it crashed into the wall next us. We edged around out its line of sight and Ashley whimpered, on the verge of tears. “Dyron, I told you! I told you dammit!” she said. If she could’ve yelled, trust me, she would’ve! As she cried her silent tears, I flew through the pages of the bestiary.

“Here! It’s a Bull Behemoth Demon,” I thought. This one was a male according to text. The hair color on females is lighter, other than that they look pretty much the same. He must’ve smelled us because he attacked our hiding place ruthlessly. We escaped without a moment to spare as it destroyed the boulder. We took refuge inside its own cave, hoping our scent would blend with his and he wouldn’t notice until we were ready to attack. As we hid, I read on. From my reading, I found out that they don’t require much water, and there fore don’t really like it that much.

That would be our ticket out! “Ashley,” I whispered, “cast an ice spell big enough to freeze it against the wall!” It might take a while, but I was pretty sure it would work.

“Ok,” she nodded. She began to run up behind it but by the time she was discovered, it was too late. “Ice!!” was her call and she threw out both her fists. From each ring on her index finger, electric blue rays blasted the monster. The impact forced him into the wall and thick ice covered his body.

When she stopped, I then shouted as I readied more arrows, “Now melt it! But don’t vaporize it!” She followed my orders and her flames never touched the ice but melted it quickly. The ground was soaked and so was the behemoth. I let the three arrows go and the hit its jaw which really pissed it off!

That’s when I broke out the chain scythe! I swung it over head to gain speed and threw it off. I slashed at the monster’s legs and body, now covered in water and blood. Though it could barely stand, it charged blindly, limping as it did so. We easily out ran it as it repeatedly rammed its head into the wall, causing so much of a ruckus as it did so. Ashley then screamed, “Lightning!” and from each middle finger, bolts white lightning electrocuted the behemoth to death.

The beast fell hard, now dead. With one more swing of the chain scythe, I caught the blade around its neck and yanked hard, decapitating the monster, spraying its crimson contents on the ground. The weapon slid out of my hand and onto the ground and I backed away and Ashley gripped my sleeve, still near tears.

I hugged her, stroking her, hair, telling her, “It’s ok. It’s over now.” We walked back and retrieved our things and continued in silence. She was mad at me, I know. This was my fault.
