“Hurry up John-Robert! Where going to be late for your appointment.” Rebecca yelled at her young lazy son.
“I’m going as fast as I can mommy” John-Robert slowly got out of bed and got ready to go to his doctor appointment in the morning. Rebecca had made this appointment in the morning because her son wanted to go to the pumpkin patch with his class.
Rebecca and her son had gotten to the appointment on time and even got out early. As Rebecca was driving to the school her son and daughter attended her cell phone started to ring. She looked at the caller ID to see who it was. When she looked she saw that it was her mother.
“Hi mom.”
“Hello Rebecca.” Yolanda, Rebecca’s mother, had a worried voice and sounded inpatient.
“What’s wrong mother?” Rebecca’s asked in a tone that mirror her mothers.
“I think u should go home check and see if your grandmother is okay” still in her inpatient worried tone.
“Why mom? What happened?”
“Well I just got a call and they said that the fire department is at the house” Rebecca’s mother reluctantly answered her daughter’s simple question.
“Oh! Is that it mom? You know its okay. Grandma probably just set another dish towel on fire.” Rebecca and her family had lived with her grandparents for a long time so she know all of her grandmothers habits and leaving a dish towel on the stove was one of her common mistakes.
“No sweetie I really think u should go home and check it out” Yolanda told her daughter in a reluctant way. Like if she was hiding something from her.
Rebecca wasn’t worried because her grandma was always over exaggerating things. “Well ok I have enough time to go there and check and still make it to j-robs school on time”
“I’ll pick up Danielle from school today, ok?” Rebecca’s mother told her as if she wouldn’t be able to pick her up from school on time.
“Ok? Sure mom. Thanks! Love you bye.”
“I love you to sweetie bye” Yolanda hurriedly hung up the phone.
Rebecca looks at her son who was sitting next to her “were going to go home for a minute ok?”
“Why mommy?! Were going to be late!” john-Robert answered his mother in a wine.
“We won’t be late its only going to be a minute.” Rebecca told her son again as they were driving down the street that would take them to there house.
As they turned on to the street they were blocked. As soon as Rebecca seen this she understood that something very dangerous had happened at her house.
She parked her car on a street a block away. She and her son quickly walked to there house. They were walking so fast you could hardly call it walking. It was more of a slow jog.
Even though they were all the way on the other end of the street the both of them could see the enormous violent flames that were emerging from the back of the house. They were licking at the branches of the tall trees above threatening to burn there life away. The smoke was filling the air. The old house built in the1950’s was poorly designed and caused the fire to be hotter then if it was a more modern house. The whole house was like an oven even if the fire was in the other room every thing in the house melted and all the windows shuddered, the blind were a puddle on the floor, and the wood damaged.
From the outside of the house Rebecca could feel the heat radiating out. Outside of the house was Rebecca’s grandma sitting in a fireproof coat and next to her was her grandpa holding on to the two dogs. She watched as the firefighters had to cut down all the burning trees around the fire and tare off the roof of the house to get to the main fire. Soon the fire was out and half the house was ash. Rebecca looked and was stunned in horror.
On October 22, 2004 Rebecca Ortiz watched with her son and grandparents as there house caught fire and burn.
