Wow. This has been the best two weeks of my life. I made new friends and changed. I found out a lot of my limits and met many people. I befriended many of the people I thought I'd never be friends with. I can actually say "one time at Band Camp" and actually mean it. This may be my first year at Band Camp, but I loved every second of it. Funny how just the beginning of this year, I said I would never do Marching Band. Funny how I'm in it now. The past two weeks have just gone by so fast. With so much work, fun, and watching the percussion do push-ups, I wish that Band Camp was year 'round. It's hard work, but once you finally get the drills down, you feel accomplished. Very accomplished.
I know now about the "You know you're in marching band when..." and most of them actually seem true. I mean, look at these!
*roll step while you walk to class.
*practice your marching music on a daily basis.
*major in music and use your highschool band director as a role model.
*drummers make sense to you.
*starting saying left! over and over again to the people that walk in front of you on the way to class.
*have a collection of sheet music from every piece you got.
*tell football players to get off the band field.
*hear music and you start marking time.
*walk behind someone and you're in step with them.
*try to guess the tempo of your favorite song.
*have all your friends in the band.
*don't mind changing clothes on the bus.
*point out key changes and dynamics while listening to the radio.
*only think about dating the people in the band.
*like wearing your uniform.
*consider your drill book / dot book / etc. "The book".
*get mauled by a drum on a daily, weekly thing.
*notice people are worrying when they see you without your instrument.
*have a name for your instrument.
*have a favorite key signature.
*have a favorite time signature.
*spend more time at school than you do at home.
*wish marching band was a year round sport.
*use the line "you wouldn't understand, it's a band thing" more than you use the word "like".
*actually like the feathers in your hat / helmet / etc.
*see your section more than your own family.
*think triplets are cool.
*think sweat is sexy.
*own at least one cd of a professional orchestra.
*being to enjoy waking up at five am on saturday morning for competitions.
*think of what instruments non-band people would play if they were in band.
*understand the double meaning of "trombones know more positions".
*have a music stand in your bedroom.
*wait in line for an amusement park ride and yell at everyone to guide.
*annoy all your friends by singing your opener all day in class.
*complain that ESPN should have DCI broadcasted.
*get a drum cadence stuck in your head all day.
*have a metronome and a tuner next to your clock radio.
*can understand what the drum major is saying.
*brag about what instrument you play.
*take marching band seriously.
*make fun of the band director instead of other kids.
*know who dr.beat is.
*all you have planned for friday and saturday are band related things.
*have tried to see if you can fit in a tuba case.
*can conduct the music playing on the radio in your car, while driving.
*can use the excuse "i'm in band."
*hear "armed guard" and think of a girl with a pole instead of a guy with a gun.
*think bandcamp is fun.
*hear the word box and look around to see if you can make it 8to5.
*remember flats and sharps easier than 2+2.
*are alone and you suffocate because there's no one telling you to breathe.
*think slides feel normal.
*can address a line or diagonal without help.
*can and are willing to fall asleep on the band bus.
*come back after graduation to watch the band on their first day of summer band.
*wear your marching shoes to school.
*start to call the "football field" the "marching field".
*no longer think of yourself as a person, but as a dot on a drill book page.
*miss homecoming for a band function and don't mind.
*know everyone in band's business.
*have no secrets.
*can have an interesting conversation with a tuba player or a drummer..
*consider band a sport.
*mark time to any music.
*know the tempo of your favorite song.
*always start walking on your left foot.
*have IM conversations with band people that are nothing but song titles.
*can think of over 100 dirty jokes off the top of your head about woodwinds.
*can't walk and do something, but you can march a perfect 8to5 with your eyes closed.
*eat lunch, and usually dinner, in the bandroom.
*can actually tell a story with "one time, at bandcamp."
*can play more than one instrument.
*can finish other band member's sentences.
*have an email address/screenname with your instrument in it.
*named your instrument, and everyone knows the name.
*are used to how weird drummers are.
*decide that you want to learn every single band instrument before you graduate.
*can really relate to michelle from american pie...you actually know who michelle is without looking it up.
*wish bandcamp was all summer.
*have ever been hysteric over a piece of music.
*wear band shirts to school, required or not.
*go somewhere new, you try to guess what instrument everyone plays.
*have slept in the bandroom.
*see a raging fire and/or tornado ripped through the area, the only thing you would care about was getting your instrument.
*know the best part of a football game is halftime.
*think marching in a parade is fun.
*start to know that "one more time" is a lie.
*know and believe that "winds kick brass".
*click drum cadences with your mouse.
*have your band staff's screennames and actually talk to them.
*have a sock tanline that people can see a mile away.
*have the scores from DCI memorized, even the ones from a few years ago.
*spend more time in the bandroom than most people do in full time jobs.
*accidentally start walking with your right foot, you have to skip to "get back in step". [even when you're walking alone].
*realize that band comes before school.
*you fall, and are more worried about the instrument than the concussion you probably have.
*go for two hours without water in 90degree heat.
*have more memories having to band than anything else.
*see people emptying spit valves and you don't get sick anymore.
*know that numbers past eight aren't important.
*think band isn't just an extracurricular activity, but a way of life.
*know someone's personality by what instrument they play.
*count down the days to bandcamp.
*constantly dress to your row [in class] to make sure your desk is in line.
*know how many people can be crammed into a minivan.
*can change, go to the bathroom, and go to your locker in under five minutes.
*have left your house wearing things you swore you never would...hair curlers, spandex, two tons of makeup.
*know how to manage nine girls and one bathroom.
*know nothing is ever definite.
*smell sunscreen, and think of bandcamp.
*are the last people to hear about the peprally and the first to perform at them.
*know that if you try something weird it might just end up in the show.
*go to every school football game but never paid for one.
*have never actually watched a football game.
*wake up in the morning and put your dotbook on, not thinking about it.
*can change infront of guys and not be phased.
*go to the mall and you get instep with either the women wearing highheels on the tile floor or the mall music.
*have a fire drill and get instep with the beeps.
*have music theory class, you try to see what note in the scale is the note on the school bell.
*roll your feet when you walk and walk backwards on your toes.
