Journal
A journal for me to rant.... and rant.... But moreover, please satisfy this shy writer's desire of reviews.
Rant
It ain't got a title, so don't try to give it one.

I felt I'd get some ranting out.

This is only a half formed thought, but I'll try to get it out.

In literature, modern fantasy novels especially, you hear about the god-chosen. Those who are practically guaranteed never to fail. To always triumph, from their confidence in their skills and in their patron. Of course, you don't hear too much about them any more. Readers reject Gary Stus and Mary Sues.

But personally, I'd hate to be one of those. If I ever did happen to be trust the hilt of adventure, and actually found the motivation to go through with it, I wouldn't want to be god chosen. What's the point of striding boldly into the unknown if that boldness is from the confidence you will not fail? I'd prefer it if I had to fake that confidence, to fool myself, or if that confidence was just stupid bravado. What's the point of risking your life if you know you're never going to lose it? You can't risk your life, because your patron shall watch over you. If I were to triumph, then I would do it by my own power, not by the power of some supernatural being. If I were to be the puppet of some unearthly whatever, then I'd cast aside their guidance and strike my own path.

Wanna take a guess at my religion in that respect?

Secondly, I am now dissing all your music. That's right, world! You heard me! I am now dissing all rap and stupid pop songs.

Rap, while it has much meaning to it, holds very, very little musical talent. Personally, I do not count rap as music, but spoken poetry with a rhythm or two on the background. Rap is great as poetry, but lousy for music.

Pop songs have no meaning. The singers are untalented [as far as I can tell. What happened to the beautiful tone and ring of the music of old? You can no longer hear the virtues of each voice. That is what technology does, unfortunately], harmonies are ineloquent and lacking, and melodies are drab and unmoving. It even lacks the meaning of rap half the time [even though it makes up for that with maybe some minimal instrumental accompaniment] And it's always "I", "me" and "myself" too. Do these artists know no anything but themselves? True, I accept that often music is born of pain, and you feel your own pain more than anything else, but honestly. I'd say up to 80% of pop music is about the artist's self.

Ha. After all this, I bet you'd make me out as an opera lover with a loathing of technology who is clinging to the past and unwilling to move on; when I grow up, I'll refuse to let my children listen to their music, on the grounds that it's 'trash'. But this isn't true. While I do admire opera, I do appreciate rock, provided it's got some meaning and a decent instrumentalist part, and J-pop. And K-pop. And J-rock and K-rock of course. Chinese music is bad, take it from a chinese musician. As for technology, I'm typing this up on a laptop, am I not? Do I not have a better-than-decent WPM from typing ninety page word documents? And as for the last one, I've sworn myself never to try to sway anyone's opinion because I have authority over them. I'll try to persuade someone to see my side of things, but I'll never forbid someone to do what they love. At least that's what I tell myself. If I stay true to that is another matter.

Time to write the Moving-On Speech. Wish me luck.
