There's some things about my writing that my English teachers don't like, but I feel actually contributes to the work..
Mainly, it's the fact that I usually write in first person..
I think this is actually from the years I've spent writing in first person on gaia, but I've done it so much that it's difficult not to.
I've also, in my opinion, become quite skilled at it.. My works are never of poor quality, but my teachers have usually docked points from me because of the perspective.
Also, I sometimes choose to write based on my personal opinions, and I occasionally fail to cite sources.. I do the research, I just don't include direct references to it in my work. I see this as a benefit, as well. With normal papers, formatted MLA style or what have you, you have those citations and quotes randomly distributed through the paper, forcing the reader to occasionally think about the citations while they read them, rather than the topic being discussed. This prevents the reader from forming their own opinions while they read, as their minds become preoccupied. Also, when a work is written using personal opinions, the writer tends to become a little more emotionally involved with the work, and it evolves to a higher quality because of it.
When I write without any citations or random quotes throughout the paper, usually it allows the readers to actually think about the topic, rather than the formatting of the paper.
Formatting should not matter when the work is of high quality!
The paper I posted in the previous journal entry received a high A grade, but was docked points because of being written in first person and not including many citations. While I won't contest the grade, I don't think it's fair.
Then again, what is fair these days? sweatdrop
