I sit on my bed reading my favorite book “Full Moon Rising”, when my home phone rings. “Moshi-moshi,” I answer it.
“Hey Onee,” I hear my Onii-san, Ryuu, say.
“Onii-san!” I groan, “Stop calling my phone! It’s MINE!” I dog-ear the page I’m on and ask, “So what do you want?”
His reply is “I mmah ‘ak oo ‘aa-sa’” “Whaaa’…?”
I take the phone from my ear and examine it curiously, to see if anything is wrong with it, Then ask “Nani?”
“Gomen,” Ryuu-onii-san apologizes, “Was eating. Anywho, I’d like to talk to ‘kaa-san, please.” I sigh and slowly get off my comfy memory foam bed and walk over to the door.
I open the door and yell “’Kaa-san, Ani wants to talk to you!”
My mother steps out of her room, looking tired as heck. I hand her the phone.
“Moshi….whatever.” she yawns into the phone. I shut my door, shaking my head. As I walk back to my bed I notice my reflection in the mirror.
Long, naturally light purple hair that extends to the back of my knees and curls at the ends. Normal figure and normal looks. My eyes are a bright vibrant green, and my ears and tail midnight black, tipped with white. Both are like a fox’s more than a cat’s. ‘Yuck,’ I think. I’ve never have liked my reflection. I head back over to my bed and plop down. ‘I’ll finish this chapter,’ I think to myself. ‘Then I’ll go to bed.’ But against my will, my head starts to nod and my eyes open and close and open and…
Sometime later I wake to the sound of a masculine like scream. It terrifies my. The sounds are coming from out back of the house. A shadow passes by my window. More screams accompany the shadow. Mom enters my room, scaring me even more than I already am. She puts a finger to her lips, as if to shush me. She doesn’t need to tell me twice.
We sit, huddled on the couch listening to the screams and noises outside. When we finally think its over, the screaming starts again. At least twenty minutes pass before everything goes eerily quiet.
I jump and scream as the doorbell rings. From inside, I hear someone say “Please…Help me,” It is a quiet noise, that I can just barely pick up with my advanced hearing.
“Please,” the voice says again “Help me…?” I cautiously walk over to the door and peer out the peep hole.
I see a figure lying on the ground, surrounded by something dark and growing. I open the door and look out at the figure lying on the ground.
I see that it is a humanoid.
I walk out and the person looks up at me. I see that he is a male Vampiri or Vampire from his teeth. Blood drips down his face and onto the welcome mat. He looks to be only seventeen or eighteen.
My mother walks up behind me and gasps. “Get him inside!” she says. “Quickly now!” I rush over to the man and pick him up, best I can.
He tries to help as much as he can…which isn’t very much. He isn’t very heavy, but his clothes are slick with rain and blood so it is hard to get a good grip on him. Somehow I manage to get him onto the couch in the living room. I set him down gently and my mother hurries in with a wash basin filled with water and a cloth.
“Wet the towel and place it on his head,” She says over her shoulder. “ Go find some sheets, quickly! And the med kit.” My nod is curt. I hurry to do what she says. I look in the bathroom for the kit and luckily fin it there. Next I grab some spare sheets from the cabinet in the hallway. When I get back into the living room, I stare at the man. He is sitting up on the couch. I note for the first time what he really looks like. He has shaggy, brown almost black hair adorned with red and green streaks. His eyes are crystal blue and flecked with gold and silver. My stranger is wearing a normal white t-shirt, a beige scarf and black jeans.
His shirt has three big rents in it, but his side does not.
He stands and smiles. “I am Reighn, I thank you for saving me, miss.” I look at him, slightly confused as to what he means.
“But I didn’t save you." I say, “My mother is the one who really saved you. Not me.” My mother walks in from the kitchen, and says “But you dragged him in here.” She brushes loose hair out from her eyes. “Which means you saved him, I took the stake out of him. It was near enough to his heart that it would’ve killed him.” I don’t understand much of what my mother says, but nod my head anyway.
I hand the white cotton blanket to Reighn, ‘Wait,’ I think. ’Took a stake out of his heart? Then wouldn’t there be….’ Be fore I finish the thought, my eyes lock on with the nasty blood red wood chunk. “Ummm…” everything starts to go black. The room spins and I hit the ground….
I wake in my room, wait until Okaa-san hears about the weird dream I just had. But as I turn to my other side I see the handsome vampire Reighn. He smiles and says “Are you okay?” I nod my head weakly and sit up. “So, like rock, do we?” he gestures at the walls, voice like melted chocolate. I get lost in his eyes, though why is beyond even me, thinking about chocolate and the posters. “Falling for the vampire eyes, are we?” Reighn snaps me out of my trance. “Ummm…wait, what did you say?” He looks around the room. “I haven’t heard of many of these bands, but Sick Puppies I have.”
Posters of Green Day, Evanescence, Fall Out Boy, Three Days Grace, My Chemical Romance and tons of others line the walls around my room as home made, wall paper. Which is what my mom calls it. “Which Sick Puppies song is your favorite?” Reighn asks. “Howard’s Tale or Pitiful,” I say.
We talk for a while longer. I learn that Reighn is in a band as well.
“What do you do and what’s the name of your band?” I ask, my curiosity peaked.
“I play lead guitar, and the name is Rising Dusk.” Reighn’s chocolate voice tells me.
“Gomen,” I apologize “I haven’t heard of you.”
“S’okay,” Reighn nods his head. “This is our first world tour type concert thing. Normally the we stay in Australia,”
“Chuuu? Australia?” I say, ”So that’s where you’re from.”
“Oh, I forgot to tell you that,” Reighn says, “That’s how I know who the Sick Puppies are.”
“So how old are you?”
“Me? Two twenty-three.”
“Wow.”
“Old, I know. How ‘bout you?”
“Sixteen.”
“Young…ish,”
“Why did you almost get killed?” I ask tipping my head to the side, ears pricking up a bit.
“Well,” Reighn starts, “I was with the band, talking to Jake, the lead bassist, and he totally flipped out on me. It wasn’t, and isn’t, the full moon yet, so I don’t know why he did.” Reighn brushes the hair out from in front of his eyes and continues. “He started kicking and punching and cussing at me! Then this shadow thing came out of know where and tried to stake me, so I ran and ended up here. Then you heard me screaming and all that good stuff.”
We fall silent for a few minutes. Then pipe up “Hey!? Can I call you Rei?”
“Rei?” Reighn asks.
“Yeah, it means thanks, grace or worship in Japanese, and it suits you as well as Reighn.”
His reply is “Sure, long as I get your number.” He has a sly kind of look in his eyes and a smirk plastered on his lips.
I get up off of my bed and head over to the desk in my room. I dig in a droor and grab a pen and paper. I write my numbers on it then rip it off, handing him both sections. He scribbles his cell and home phone down for me and stands.
“It’s been fun and all, but I should get going.” He walks over to my door and opens it. “Maybe I’ll see you at a concert or two.” He gives me a smile and slips out into the hall and living room.
I rush and cry “Wait! Where is it going to….” But it’s too late. He’s already gone out the front door and probably half way down the hill. But what really nags me is, the fact he left without saying "Good-bye."
