Today was interesting. I spent my first period class teaching people about Japanese Honorifics. It was interesting, I guess I never knew that what's common knowledge to me was so strange to others. Here's pretty much the basic concept of my "lesson."
-san: The most common honorific, and is equivalent to Mr., Miss, Ms., Mrs., etc. It's pretty much all purpose, and can be used in any situation where politeness is required...
-sama: This is one level higher than "-san". It's used to confer great respect.
-dono: Comes from the word "tono" which means lord. Even higher level than "sama", and confers utmost respect.
-kun: This suffix is added at the end of boys names as a term of endearment or familiarity. Also used among friends or when addressing someone younger or of a lower station.
And that was pretty much it. It was an interesting experience. And then I went home. Fun stuff.
