It was raining heavily as Fox trudged forward wearing dark clothing with an equally dark demeanor. Owl walked behind her, an apologetic expression across her face. She wore gray sweats, her hair pulled back into harsh ponytail. She winced as Fox stomped threw the leaves and mud.
“I’m sorry,” Owl said, her eyebrows drawing together in trepidation. Fox’s face screwed up into a scowl when she stopped walking, just staring downwards. Owl came up behind her, fidgeting.
“I can’t believe you would do something so stupid,” Fox growled, her fists clenched. Owl bit her lip, shifting from one foot to the other.
“I didn’t mean to, its not like I planned it,” she said indignantly.
“Did you even stop to even consider how everyone would feel,” Fox’s jaw tightened, her voice dropped to a low whisper, “…..how I felt..?”
Owl squeezed her eyes closed as if in physical pain. Fox took a step forward.
“Your action have consequences, and that means you can’t think of only yourself. You hurt people, devastate them and you think you can get off scot-free,” her voice rose to a higher pitch, anger flaring up as she spoke, “well, you can think again!! You should be ashamed of yourself, to think you had any right to…”
Fox choked, lifting a hand and covering her mouth. Tears built in her eyes, overflowing and falling down her cheeks. Owl opened her eyes. Looking at Fox, guilt splashed across her face. She reached a hand, but stopped short. She pulled back at Fox’s words.
“It hurts, Owl, do you realize that? It hurts to know that…,” Fox faltered, grinding her teeth in anguish, “that something like this could happen. That you would do something like this!!”
Owl’s bottom lips trembled as she hung her head, shamefaced.
“It was an accident, it happened so quick, I just acted without thinking, I didn’t even realize it until it was ….over,” she murmured, “I didn’t do it to hurt you, I swear, never to you…”
Fox shook her head, wiping her face with her sleeves, breathing in and out to calm herself.
“It doesn’t matter now, just felt like ranting and…” she said with a tired sigh, reaching into her pocket, “..I came to tell you…I…love…you..”
Owl’s face crumpled as she watched Fox kneel and place a slightly crushed bouquet in front of a headstone. In white etching, it declared the passing of Owl, Date: ?-2008. A single quote, almost like a joke was written: ”Laughter Is The Best Medicine.”
Fox brushed her fingertips across the carved words in the marble, her eyes softening with remembrance A hand fell one her shoulder, startling her.
“We need to go.”
She turned to find Damian’s sympathetic smile and outstretched hand. She nodded, standing up wearily, brushing the dirt from her knees. She took his hand and let him pull her away. Owl watched them leave, tears falling freely from her own eyes. She smiled weakly, overwhelmed , wrapping her arms around herself.
“….Sorry…”

Rain fell hard as Fox walked away. She stopped, her ears perking up as she turned. She heard something…someone. She looked back. As she stared at the marker, she could swear she saw a shadow, a person standing there. With green eyes,….and a familiar smile.
“Are you going to be alright?”
Fox jumped, spooked out of her trance, turning back to Damian. She blinked at him blankly, then nodded. She turned back, but didn’t see anything anymore.
“Yea, I’m not worried,” she smiled knowingly, “we’ll be seeing her again. People like us always show up, sooner or later.”
“People like us?”
“Me and her, we’re strong, we always bounce back.”
A smirk across her lips as she waved and mouthed words towards the marker. She turned back, walking away and out of the cemetery.
Owl smiled as water poured down on her, dripping down her face. Fox’s words repeating in her head.
