I love humanity but I hate humans
That's what Marjane Satrapi said in one interview, echoing my sentiments. A similar sentiment was expressed by the old man in Thus Spoke Zarustra where he says that he loves God, but he cannot love humans. Orwell said a similar thing about saints - about how they love all humanity and thus can love no one human or allow one human to monopolize their love. The love of all humans is agape, different from lust and different from what we consider love, elevating one person above all others. Saints are inhuman because they love humanity but cannot love one person. Its not to say that they are evil or wrong but I believe that in one section of humanity, perhaps as little as 5 percent, some people simply cannot love an individual more than others. They then love God, manifestaton of all their desire, an abstraction who cannot hurt them and disappoint them. There is nothing wrong with these idealists. Gandhi and Teresa are both these idealists manifesting agape love. But these people are different, different from the rest of humanity, for elevating humanity above the love of home, kith, nation and land. Many of us cannot imagine such an existence.
