Jonas's heart fluttered every time he saw her. Emily was just so very perfect. Jonas had met her on the beach all those years ago. They were just teenagers. She was running with her long black hair free flowing. And he was just there. He did not even remember any more. All that had mattered was Emily. The love of his life. He had chased after her to just find out who she was and where she lived. She had smiled at his efforts. And the glint in her eye was mischievous. A week later, he stood outside her house serenading her to give him a chance. She gave him that chance after another month of him romanticizing her. And the rest is history.
But Jonas's story is in their later years of love. They had only been married for about 5 years. They were trying for kids but who knew that dream would be short-lived. It was on one fateful morning. He told her like he always did, "I love you dear sweet Emily. And watch out for the morning business folk." And she would always just wink and sigh, "Darling Jonas, I love you and I can outrun those business folk while running circles around you, like i did all those years ago." And out the door she went. He tended to his paper, smiling to himself and instead of reading just reminiscent all those years ago.
Suddenly the phone was ringing. Jonas snapped out of his dream to answer the phone. In the next 30 seconds he was flying to put his coat and hat on. He had to get to the hospital. There, they told him that Emily had been hit by a car and was now in a coma. Jonas went to her side. All he could think about was how peaceful she looked. His eyes started leaking. He vowed he would never leave her side, even if she was a vegetable. A lost cause the nurses and doctors have told her. They all tried to tell him that he needed to pull the plug. But Jonas would not hear of it.
Jonas's bond with Emily had grown to the point that no person could remove them from the sterile white hospital room. The hospital tried to help them by sending therapists in. Therapists tried to reason with him that she would be at peace. He didn't listen but just stared intently at his beloved, willing her to get better. The therapists just sighed trying to tell him that if he loved her as much as he said he did, then he should let her go. All he replied would be that if she went, he would take his own life to go with her.
The talk of suicide made the hospital decide it was time to get the police involved. But reasoning was no good. Policemen tried to physically remove him from the room but it was useless. Jonas and Emily had a bond that made it impossible to remove each from each others presence. The police even resorted to police brutality hoping that knocking him unconscious would break the bond. As Jonas laid on the ground, bruised and bloodied but still conscious, he just smiled to himself. As a nurse tried to get near him to help him up, a gust of wind pushed her back. Policemen tried to rush at him, and a wind once more blew them into the hall. Not one physical being could no longer touch either Jonas or Emily. Police left shaking their heads for the poor lost man. One even teared up as he thought about his beloved at home, cooking over the stove a good warm meal just for him.
Days started passing slowly turning into weeks, working their way into months. As months came and went, Jonas celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and every little memory of him and her together. Eventually, the room was no longer a white sterile cage but the palace he and Emily had called home. The familiarity became more real to Jonas as the bond’s strength increased. With that bond consuming Jonas; his determination to revive Emily grew. Dear, sweet, elegant Emily was once a source of laughter and energy, and without her the colors of the world dulled to a senseless gray. He cried his tears at night in night’s sweet slumber. He tended to every detail of care in the passing days, losing count of time.
With the years adding up, doctors and nurses would just pass by the door, forgetting that room 77 even existed. Jonas was left alone to grow old with his beloved. Never knowing what a child’s first words were like or a baby’s laughter, but it was not important, not without dear, sweet, elegant Emily. And not one person bothered them ever again. The door closed permanently one stormy night. Jonas had not even noticed. He just looked at her calm face and thought of their wedding day, she was so bubbly and smiling. He smiled to himself, wondering how she could be so calm when she had been so lively at one time. He soon succumbed to night’s sweet slumber with tears leaking out of the corners of his eyes.
With the door closed, It left Jonas with their home in solitude. They just disappeared. Nobody was the wiser. It had been decades since another soul had bothered to even try to open the door. Jonas and Emily had been destined to be at peace with each other. Love had conquered their hearts.
As for where did Jonas and Emily vanish to, I would tell you but that ruins the surprise of paradise, doesn’t it?
