Children of Discovery
The river of Elder flowed gently as the light of the morning sun reflected off of its surface, producing glittering patterns of breathtaking beauty. The meadows surrounding the river were covered in a light-coloured, freshly cut grass.A young man with short black hair was lying on his side amongst a small patch of pink and white carnations that were growing near the river. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, smelling the aromas of the natural beauty surrounding him. He opened his eyes quickly at the sound of the soft shuffle of clothing and sat up. Standing before him was a beautiful little girl of about eight years with pale glowing skin and flowing golden hair. She began to kneel down in front of him, about a metre away, her hair blowing gently in the cool, soft wind.
"Uh, hi there." the man said slowly, "My name's Xavier, may I have the pleasure of knowing yours?"
The girl sat in front of him silently and closed her eyes. As she opened them again slowly, he gasped: her eyes had turned from a pale grey to a bright, glowing blue.
"Wow." Xavier whispered.

* * *

Two hours had passed and not a single word was uttered by the young girl, no matter how hard Xavier tried to persuade her into speech.
"I guess you really are the silent type." He uttered, dismissing the past two hours of his hard work.
The girl just sat in silence, her dazzling blue eyes moving slowly between Xavier's. He sighed and moved his arm behind his head to support its weight.
"I guess you'd make a good listener though." Xavier said quietly, "You don't get too many of those in this world. Everyone's so self-obsessed these days. I can't exactly rule myself out of that statement either."
The girl tilted her head slowly as though trying to listen more intently. Xavier smiled and watched the fluffy clouds pass over the pale blue sky.
"I'm an artist," Xavier continued, "from the town of Jordana. People never seem to like me, or the things I do. I don't know if it's my fault or if they're just too judgemental. But it's getting very hard to find work lately.
"Nobody can see the world through my eyes. Nobody actually stops and takes everything in. The whole world has gone crazy and I'm the only one who can see it. Sometimes it almost drives me to insanity."
Xavier was speaking faster now, getting more and more restless.
"They build and build and build over everything that once was natural! I can't stand it. This is the only place that has been left untouched, and it's mine. I saved up for six years to buy this land and it was worth it."

* * *

Xavier continued with his long winded rant about society, repeating all the things he previously said in varying ways. The girl sat patiently, watching his eyes grow wilder with each word. As Xavier drew near to his conclusion, the girl moved her hand suddenly and placed it over his eyes. She looked intently at the effect that it created and slowly moved her hand down his face over his now still lips. He opened his eyes to see what she intended to do and his eyes widened as he saw her eyes change again, from that dazzling blue to a deep, mysterious purple.
"Your eyes never cease to amaze me," Xavier whispered once the girl had withdrawn her hand.
The girl smiled he sweet smile and tilted her head sideways again.
"Do you see the colours of the world as I do, dear girl?" Xavier sighed, "I've never told anybody of this truth. When I lay back and look at the sky, I see the most dazzling shade of purple, one which almost matches your eyes now. The river is a light shade of green, whereas the grass is a light shade of pink."
The girl's eyes lit up once more and she moved her hand over his eyes again. She quickly withdrew it and turned her head towards the river.
"What's wrong?" Xavier asked, suddenly alert.

* * *

The little girl slowly got up and stood facing the river, her smooth, pink dress fluttering softly around her white stockinged legs. Xavier moved into a sitting position and watched the girl questioningly. Then he saw it, a young woman of about his age making her way towards them: she seemed to be in a hurry.
"Do you know her?" Xavier asked, wondering what to do.
She turned back to Xavier and smiled, her eyes now a menacing shade of crimson. He looked at her with a confused smile and got up gingerly and heard someone whispering nearby. He looked up surprised to see how quickly the woman had reached them.
"Adriella, I told you not to run off like that," the woman said in a desperate voice," Thank God I found you."
"Um, hi." Xavier said slowly, watching the little girls eyes changing colours rapidly.
" Thanks for finding my little sister," the woman said quickly, "Our mother would have been sick with worry had I lost her."
"That's okay. Nice to meet you, I'm Xavier."
"Oh, yes, I'm Vermilion."
"I've been telling this beautiful young girl of my life for the past few hours." Xavier said with a small smile.
"Really?" The woman said surprised, "She usually hates it when people speak. You see, Adriella's not able to hear people when they speak, she's deaf."
"Oh." Xavier muttered, his heart sinking, "I just thought she didn't enjoy speaking. Well, I enjoyed talking to her anyway."
Vermilion smiled, "Thank you for looking after her, but now we must get going."
"Well, bye then." Xavier said, squeezing Adriella's shoulder softly.

* * *
Xavier sat down again as Vermilion began to walk toward the river, Adriella's hand in her own, when the little girl broke free of her grip and darted towards Xavier with a small smile.
She sat on her haunches, her eyes level with Xavier's, and said softly, "You and I alone have discovered the path of truth and can reveal what nobody else can. We are born and raised of light and purity. We are children of discovery. Don't change for anything, be what you were intended to be. We will meet again shortly, wait for me."
Xavier sat wide-eyed and stared at the place where the girl had been sitting.
"Well, goodbye again." Vermilion said as she took Adriella by the hand and began to walk towards the river again, obviously unaware of the event that had just occurred. Xavier smiled and thought to himself, I shall see you again, Adriella, but for now I will paint my visions of truth and discovery...For you.
