The clash of metal against wood filled the air in the small field as Lilly, a small girl in a tattered brown dress with large icy eyes, threw small old daggers at an old tree hitting the mark almost every time. A young boy stood not too far behind her, swinging a sword at air, the sword would go up over his head and land behind him, it was an old sword, much too large for the boy yet he still tried to practice with it. Lilly went to retrieve her daggers from the old oak as screams filled the air. She looked towards the boy, fear filled his face, he dropped the sword and started in a run east towards the village. Lilly left her daggers in the tree and followed him, and quickly pasted him. It was not that he was a slow runner, she was just able to run quickly and quietly, much like her father could. When she reached her village, the houses were ablaze. Lilly ran past the cookie-cut houses, made of wood and thatch roofing, until she came to her home, the one house the stood out from the others. She ran through the open door and into her parents’ room, which was straight in front of the front door. She found her parentdead in their room, throats slit. She slumped to the floor and cried by the side of her mother. The other child entered the room, tears in his dark blue eyes, blacken rags form his mother and father in hand. He was about two years older than she was, she being thirteen years old herself. She looked at him; both of them filled with sadness, his long dark brown hair lay flat against his scalp.
“Zarokku?” she asked, her face reddened as tears rolled down her cheeks. He nodded and looked down. Tears fell to the floor darkening the wood.
“Lilly…what are we to do…” Zarokku asked in a soft shaky voice. Lilly was certain she had no family left nor did Zarokku. She shook her head not knowing an answer. A noise came from the doorway, Lilly quickly turned to see a child about the same age as her, in a heavy black robe, hood down, a small staff hung across her back. Her long black hair pulled back into a loose ponytail and her bangs braided and pulled back into the mess as well. She had a soft smile upon her soft round face. She looked down at the threshold and Lilly slowly nodded for her to come in, before entering she beckoned to someone outside the door. Another child about seven years of age entered the room; she wore a long grey robe, hood remaining up and she held a small, soft, silver puppy in her arms. The small dog barked at the sight of Lilly and playfully wagged its tail. The older mage waked towards Lilly and Zarokku, once next to them she bent down and placed two fingers upon her parents’ necks, she felt no pulse, however. She slowly shook her head, her oddly large, bright green eyes held sympathy.
“I am so sorry for your loss, but I am only an apprentice and can not reverse death,” She sighed and looked up “My name is Kasen.” She held a hand out to the younger one, “And this is my younger sister, Shikai.”
Shikai nodded and the small silver dog jumped out of her grasp causing her to stumble forward. Kasen laughed, “And that would be ZaZa. My father, Shikai, and I were passing by when I noticed the flames; ZaZa sensed the presence of two living and the rest dead. Therefore, my father told us to find the remaining people as he tired to put out some the flames. I am guessing that would be you,” Lilly and Zarokku nodded together.
“My father would like to invite you to come with us, we are heading home and it would be a pleasure to have you in our home for as long as you choose.” Kasen smiled sweetly and looked towards Shikai, with that she ran to ZaZa and carefully picked her up, and moved back towards the threshold. Kasen began walking towards the doorway holding up her pointer finger. Lilly looked towards Zarokku for help, but his uncertain expression left her feeling even worse. Looking down Zarokku slowly stood up, his dark brown tunic shook slightly causing the small brass bell on his belt jingle softly against his hip. He moved towards the door, with a single glance back at Lilly he walked into the sunlight, turning left to follow Kasen and her sister. Lily, still slumped in the floor next to her parents bodies, looked towards them and picked up a nearby knife, she cleaned it off with the end of her skirt. She sliced off about 6 inches off her parent’s hair, tied it around her bear right ankle, and ran out of the doorway with no look back as she met up with Zarokku and the others.
Only having three horses with them, one grey , one black, and one white, Shikai’s father and Shikai mounted the white steed, Lilly and Zarokku mounted the grey, and Kasen rode her own.
“Father, I have informed the two that they are welcome.” Kasen said looking at her father.
Her father stood tall, his long black hair lay around his shoulders, his silver chainmail stone bright in the noon sun, his dark tanned skin stood out against his cloths.
“Good, Kasen,” He turned towards the grey horse and its riders. “Kasen has told me about your loss and I am truly sorry, the same happened to my wife,” He cleared his throat and continued in his deep voice, “As you already know you are welcome to our home for as long as you want. Oh, my name is Jen-dro, may call me ‘Jen-dro’ or just ‘Jen’, whichever you prefer. Now, follow me if you would.”
He made a clicking noise and turned his horse towards the east, and started in a slow walk. Kasen followed the grey horse close behind her. Lilly laid her head on Zarokku’s shoulder and closed her eyes.
