My First Love

“Daddy! Can I please have the kitten ?!” I begged my father. I had attached myself to his leg and was pleading for him to give in. I had fallen in love with the most beautiful kitten in the world. It was a black kitten that had white paws, and a white tummy. It wasn’t like most kittens because black and whites have a white mark on their forehead this one did not.
My mother and father had decided to take a vacation away from each other. My father had just gotten back from Korea and was staying a couple months before he had to go back. (my father was in the military) My parents had go on each other’s final nerves and went their separate ways for about a week. My mother went to Martinsburg with my aunt Mary and my father went to stay with my uncle and Gran. That left me to decide which parent I wanted to stay with.
I chose my uncle David. I was four and my uncle David lived on a big piece of land that was attached to my grandmother’s property and he had a million animals. Most of his animals happened to be cats. My parents had agreed that I could stay as long as my father would come and check on me on the following Friday night to make sure that I was alright..
The week went by quickly in my eyes. In between helping my uncle feed the animals, going to his friends houses, and playing with the animals, I never once thought about my parents…until I saw her. She was the most beautiful thing in the world, she had black fur that covered her body, and the only white that was on her was a touch of it on her paws and on her tummy. Her eyes were so beautiful they were green, but when the light would flash on them they became yellow instantly. When our eyes met we could not leave each others sides, it was as if we were drawn to one another. Such as when to lovers fall in love, except our love was much more deeper than any two lovers. She was a kitten.
I had seen her the second day I was at my uncle’s house. I was wondering around outside wishing that someone would play with me because my uncle was at work and my aunt and her son was in the house cleaning. That’s when I saw her. Standing on the porch railing watching me. I didn’t run up to her in greeting like I did most of the animals, I stood as if frozen to the spot as our eyes stared into each other. I felt a cold chill run through my body as I began to back up. I thought this kitten was going to attack me. I turned around and fled as quickly as my four year old legs could carry me. I tripped and stumbled over a old car part my uncle had lying out in the yard. I did as any other four year old would do when they fell and cut their knees and hands. I cried. The kitten who had been fallowing me was in my lap purring licking at my tears trying to calm me down.
When my aunt had finally got to me I was doing the sobbing hiccups and hugging the kitten. I didn’t even realize that my aunt had picked me up and carried me into the house until she poured stuff on my knees that stung. She then laid me down in my bed. The kitten was still in my arms just purring. I had fallen asleep to the steady sound of her purring.
When I awoke she was still where she was but watching someone in the corner carefully. I immediately was scared because I was afraid of the dark and couldn’t tell who it was.
Then I heard my uncles voice, “I see you met Little Mist.” I could hear my uncle’s smile in his voice.
I smiled and answered, ”Who’s that, Uncle Dave ?”
He laughed and came over and sat beside me as he tried to pull the kitten out of my arms, but he couldn’t because the kitten had hissed at him and scratched at his hand. Again he laughed and said, “Does that answer your question?”
I looked down at the kitten and again and whispered her name. Our eyes had met, but this time I wasn’t afraid of her. I felt safe. Then as if my magic she nuzzled her nose into my cheek, licked it, then began purring again.
From this moment on Little Mist and I were inseparable. Where ever I would go she was either in my arms, by my side, or somewhere were she could be watching to make sure nothing bad would happen. Sadly that week was soon over and my father had come to “check up” on me.
I ran up to my father as any other little girl would do when they’re father would come home from work or when they haven’t seen him in forever. My father picked me up and held me tightly and told me how much he missed me as he walked into my uncle’s house. My dad sat down in a recliner with me in his lap. My uncle, aunt, and cousin sat on the couch across from my father and I and the adults talked about what had happened that week. I was in my own little world wondering when would be a good time to speak. ( when I was little I always got into trouble for interrupting) That’s when I saw Little Mist walk into the room. Her eyes instantly scanned the room for me. When she saw me I smiled and patted my lap. She cocked her head at me and though it sounds weird it was like I was in a trance with her and I could hear her thoughts. She was telling me that she didn’t trust the man I was sitting on. She didn’t like him at all and it wasn’t safe for me to be sitting where I was. I slipped off of my father’s lap and came to her. I sat down on the floor next to her and she jumped in my lap and sat there starring at my father.
My uncle and aunt took my father into the kitchen to talk to him privately, but the way I was “linked” to Little Mist I couldn’t move at all. My father came in and sat on the floor next to me. Little Mist glared at him and hissed softly. My father scooted back from me and started talking to me.
“Uncle Dave said that you made a friend while you were here. What’s her name?” He asked me.
I arched my eyebrow because I was confused and didn’t understand what he was talking about so I answered, “I met this kitty cat, daddy. She’s really nice and she plays with me when everyone is really busy. Her name is Little Mist. It makes me sad when I have to think about leaving her. When are we going to go home, Daddy? When are we going back to Texas again?”
My father started laughing and said, “You ask to many questions for a little girl. If it makes you sad to leave Little Mist then why do you want to go back to Texas?”
I looked down into Little Mist’s eyes and tears came out of my eyes. “Daddy, I don’t want to go back. That’s why I asked. Little Mist is like my bestest friend I ever had. I don’t want to leave her.”
My father started laughing again and asked me, “How would you feel if your Uncle and Aunt decided to let you keep her, letting you take her to Texas with you to live? “
I was overly happy that instead of hugging my father I hugged Little Mist and told her how much I was happy that she would be living with me.
The day finally came that we were to go back to Texas. My parents and I went out to breakfast that morning at Shoney’s. We made our trip back to my uncle’s house to pick up Little Mist. From that moment on Little Mist was mine and I’m never going to forget her.
