Chapter 2: A Dark Past

Darkness was illuminated all around by the faint candle light throughout the small city. In the midst of the darkness, a lone girl walked with purpose and pride. Head held high she walked towards the sole building unlit throughout the city. Cautiously but fearlessly she pushed open the door slightly and slipped in without a sound.
She withdrew two daggers from her leg holsters, and continued through a long dark hall towards an altar illuminated by a dark and eerie red light. She laid her daggers on the altar in the shape of an “X”. She kneeled down onto one knee, placing her hands on her upraised knee.
“Oh Dark Lord. I praise thee. Give me the power to overcome all my obstacles, and the strength to defeat any who oppose me.” Said the young woman in a clear and demanding voice.
An overpowering purple light illuminated the hall and the young woman startled, grabbing her daggers and setting herself up to her proper fighting stance. The light faded as quickly as it had appeared, yet she stood there, ready, waiting, and watching.
“I know you did not leave. Show yourself coward, before I have to come and find you.” Said the woman in a sinister and frightening voice.
“I am not hiding you blind fool. I am standing right here. Can you not see me? Open your eyes fool, before I kill you as I have countless others.” Said an even darker voice that boomed throughout the hall. Several creatures took flight as the sound reverberated off the walls, disturbing their resting place.
“Akouzi! My Lord! I apologize for my rudeness. I did not expect you to be here of all places. I beg your forgiveness Sir.” Said the woman with a tone of fear in her voice. She knelt down again, placing her daggers at her feet.
“Silence. I have a job for you. I hear tell that you are the strongest, smartest, and most feared ninja of the Shin-Bokou assassins. Have I heard correctly?” asked Akouzi, who was now visible as he lit the candle with a wave of his hand.
“Indeed Master. I have trained my whole life to be the best, and I have achieved the highest rank ever achieved amongst the Shin-Bokou. I am the youngest to have ever done so.”
“Impressive, I will admit. How old are you now?”
“I am very young yet. I am only nineteen. The previous holder of this rank at the youngest age was thirty-seven. It’s pathetic.”
“Indeed. This information greatly pleases me. I have a job that requires the work of someone like you. Is your heart pledged to the Darkness?”
“Of course my Lord. I aim to please no one except those of the Darkness.”
“That is most desirable. But before I trust you. Tell me of your past. I need to make sure you will be…” started Akouzi, pondering how to word his next phrase, “Properly trained to take on this assignment, as it is of major importance to me.”
“Of course my Lord. My mother and father birthed me at a young age, bringing me into this place at a time of need. Since birth my mother urged me to become a Shin-Bokou assassin. I started training at the age of six, thirteen years ago. I excelled quickly, the teachers were amazed at how naturally…” she began to explain, “gifted. I was first taught in the way of stealth. I mastered that skill in a month’s time. A skill that takes most Shin-Bokou a year too completely master. That was the first indication to me that I was destined to be a High Lord assassin for the Shin-Bokou.”
“That is an amazing feat, it took me little longer to master stealth myself.” Replied Akouzi, his evil grin evident, even beneath his silver mask.
“From there, they decided to teach me the ways of being agile. I was sent through rigorous tests only allowed to those of the top of the class. With other Shin-Bokou assassins multiple years older then me, many of which older then I am now, and I excelled at an amazing pace even amongst the age difference. I mastered that skill within four months, the fastest in my class, it left many other students discouraged and broken. They are weak.”
“Your feats are some to be proud of. You are an amazing assassin, keep going, I’m highly enjoying this tale.” Said Akouzi, who now conjured a comfortable chair from thin air in the middle of the aisle that led to the altar, taking a seat.
“Your need for comfort pleases me Lord, the fact that you wish to hear my tale this badly greatly inspires me, and makes me feel as if this task is worthwhile.” Said the woman, bowing her head once more.
“It is worth while. Please, continue. I have little time.”
“My apologies, I will try to make this quick. The next skill I was set to master was tracking humans, and countless other intelligent beings, such as elves, dwarves, and many others. I mastered this within two weeks. The easiest thing for me to master. It was so simple. I was appalled at how easy the training for our assassins were.”
“It took me much longer to track. But then again, I have ailments that made that task…difficult…for me.” Said Akouzi, raising a hand absent mindedly to his left eye.
“I am very fortunate. From there I started training with another assassin, one who was said to be as skilled as I. Together me and her mastered weapons training with one another. It was so easy. It took me three days to master throwing knives. Another two days for shurikens. And it took one day to master throwing darts. The other woman took twice as long. I was dishonored to be compared to her. It ashamed me that they thought she would ever be as strong as I am.”
“Would this woman be Jasmine? The child prodigy said to equal your power?”
“Indeed. Not any more though. I proved them wrong. We began weapons training, asked to pick the weapon we felt most comfortable with. I chose the daggers. Jasmine scoffed at me, choosing a rapier, saying that the speed, reach, and strength of the rapier far outstripped that of a dagger. I mastered the skill of daggers in twelve hours time. It took dear little Jasmine twelve days to master her rapier. Within those days I watched her training, laughing to myself as she was unaware I saw her fail, repeatedly, to master her weapon. When she finally did master it, she came to see me.”
“Oh, this is the part of your story I was most anxious to hear. Please. Continue.” Said Akouzi, sitting up more attentively now.”
“I was still only nine years old at this time. I spent so little time mastering my skills I took so much time off, just fooling around. I could have achieved my rank so much earlier. I am a fool for that. But, none the less, Jasmine was eleven years old. Two years older and so much stronger then me, or so people thought. She approached me after mastering her Rapier skills, challenging me to show her what I learned, believing that she actually master her weapon before I had. How ignorant of a girl she was.”
“And let me guess. The whole school went to see the battle between the Child Prodigies.” Asked Akouzi, the woman lifted her head and stared long and hard at him.
“Indeed. You have been very well informed.”
“As always. Continue, I desire to hear how this went.”
“Of course my Lord. Well, everyone believed we were evenly matched throughout the fight. Nonsense. I merely toyed with her to humiliate her more. She too believed she was overpowering me. For hours her and I fought. I saw her tiring after a half an hour of sparring. I made her believe she was winning, allow her to chance a glancing blow to my left arm, I still have the scar. As blood leaked down my arm, I laughed. And made pretend that it was a grievous wound, and I threw away the dagger in that hand. Most people thought that was the end of the fight.”
“As most people would. A person with a dagger can be easily overpowered with a weapon such as a rapier, who’s speed matches a dagger, and has a far longer reach.” Said Akouzi, allowing himself to laugh. It was a dark and frightening laugh.
“From there we asked for a momentary pause. I kneeled down and took a few deep breaths, trying to restrain myself from laughter. I leaped up onto a table and demanded the audience’s attention. I told everyone that it was now over, that I was victorious. Everyone began to laugh, believing I was crazy, that I had lost. I got infuriated. I looked at Jasmine, who too was laughing, and I demanded we continue.”
“Everyone doubted you?” asked Akouzi.
“Indeed. That is a very common mistake among those people. They are so blind to the power one can hold, no matter what age. I let her charge first, and I moved so quickly that she couldn’t tell where I went. She stared at where her sword hit the ground aghast, wondering how I could have evaded such a fast blow. From behind her I laughed, and yelled “It ends now” and with one blow, the only blow I landed, I stabbed her. She dropped dead instantly. I remember the blood trickling down her back and my dagger and hand. I began to laugh, and everyone stared, amazed at how quickly the tide had turned. Cheers erupted throughout the hall, and I was deemed the one and only Child Prodigy, destined to be the youngest and most powerful of the Shin-Bokou. I have never been doubted since.”
“Quite impressive. You deserve to be honored with such a title. But there is more to your story, is there not?” asked Akouzi, even though the woman knew he already had the answer to that question.
“Of course. The teachers were amazed at how I was so powerful. Without a doubt from anyone I was told I would be taught the secrets of the dark magic. It was only taught to the assassins who had mastered school and already taken on their first several assignments. Taught only to the best. Who before me, were those older then twenty. This was the hardest task for me to master. I recently mastered it as a matter of fact. I learned everything I could. I mastered Dark Magic quicker then any before me, as I did everything. It took me seven laborious years, and I did it. Most people never even get close to mastering the magic I have. Yet here I stand, ready for my real task to begin.”
“What forms of the dark magic do you know? What spells do you know?” inquired Akouzi.
“Everything taught to the Shin-Bokou. The magic to create poison. To create darkness where no shadows lay. To manipulate anything dark around me. I can control anything in this room if I so wished it.” Said the woman, allowing herself to grin a malicious smile that showed she was as strong as any before her.
“Prove it. Do something that might threaten my life. I must see how strong you are myself.” Said Akouzi, now standing up.
“My Lord. I wish not to harm you.” Said the woman.
“If you wish to take my assignment, you must. Do you dare say that you are stronger then I?” yelled Akouzi, a glint of madness flashing through his eyes.
“No Master! Of course not! I would never think of it! I shall do as you wish. Prepare yourself. If I fight, I do not hold back.” Said the woman, picking up her daggers.
“That is how I wish it.” Said Akouzi.
The woman’s scream reverberated through the room as she leaped up to a high banister and vanished. From behind Akouzi a dark purple light began to glow and a green vapor began to approach him slowly.
“Pathetic. That is much to slow for someone who has supposedly mastered dark magic!” yelled Akouzi, who made the smoke disappear with a flick of his hand.
From underneath Akouzi rose a shadow, entangling his feet, and he fell forward as he attempted to leap out of its way. A loud thump filled the hall, and the clang of his mask followed the initial bang as his mask fell off.
The woman revealed herself and lunged towards Akouzi, but was thwarted as his body melted into nothingness. The woman threw her hands together with her two index fingers and middle fingers pressed together, with her remaining fingers intertwined as she chanted “Powers of the darkness protect me from the light, Give me more power to continue this fight.”
An imposing red light glowed around her hands and quickly covered her whole body, a dark purple and black orb surrounded the woman. A shuriken hit the orb and rebounded, twice as fast, towards its source. A scream filled the hall.
“Damn you! You are indeed very strong. I am highly impressed. You may stop now.” Came Akouzi’s voice as he revealed himself in front of her.
“You doubted me my Lord?” said the woman as she lowered her defense. “I surely hope not. I am the Prodigy.”
“I am highly impressed Deline. I ask for your assistance now. You have proven yourself worthy of my work.” Said Akouzi, removing the shuriken from his wounded leg. “The details will be told to you later. I want you to train yourself more. I need you to seek Ug’Zark, the Orc King. Ask him I seek audience with him.”
“Of course my Lord. I will do as you ask. I shall return in several days time. How shall I find you?” asked Deline, bowing again.
“You need not find me, I will know when you have completed my request. Now, go prepare yourself. You may leave tomorrow.” Said Akouzi. “I also must give you this. These belonged to the last Shin-Bokou assassin who achieved to injure me.” Akouzi put out his hands in an upright position, and muttered a dark blue light glowed around his hands. After a few seconds two beautiful daggers appeared in his hands. “You have earned these.”
Deline’s face lit up as she bowed to receive her gift. “Thank you Master. I will put them to good use.” Akouzi bent down and kissed her hand and gave her the daggers.
“I know you will. Good bye Deline.” Said Akouzi and with a swish of his long black cloak, he was gone.
Deline stood up and admired her newly acquired weapons. They were amazingly light and she could tell they were filled with Dark Magic. She thought to herself “As if I needed more power, but I will not complain, these weapons are suitable for me. They feel right, I must have been destined to wield these.” And without another thought she sneaked back out of the altar and went home. Inside her room she laid down, and allowed herself to sleep easily, knowing she was safe for the night, knowing that tomorrow would bring more glory to herself.
