Their true origins were not known. It is known that they were as biological weapons used by the US military.

The chiroptera feed off of fresh human blood and possess extraordinary speed, strength, and supernatural healing abilities. They are also capable of contorting and transforming various body parts in order to fly or have longer limbs. They are known to disguise themselves as ordinary humans.

The only way to exterminate them is to induce profuse bleeding by slicing them with a sword or a similar device (bullets have little to no effect).
