That day haunted young Jack for months, like a cluster of dark clouds looming around blues skies. After his mother's death Jack went to live with his grandmother, for he refused to even look at his so called "father", who had left him and his late mother the day of Jack's seventh birthday.
"I'd rather die a most gruesome death than be in the same room with that butt-wipe!" Jack had said, his green eyes veering towards his grandmother's as he brought his pale hands to his chest where is heart rested. " He hurt me, and he hurt her..I want to live with you instead of him grannie!" Covering his face with his hands, Jack bit his lip while holding back hot tears. " I hate him.." He had said with a choke in his voice and a stray tear trailing down his cheek.
And so it was, Jack's wish was granted and he lived with his grandmother "grannie" , but that wasn't all to the tale of young Jack. The young boy that had once been filled with life, and dreams he had hoped to make come true..had fallen. He became paler as the days went by, and it seemed each passing minute he was becoming skinnier, and skinnier.
He would not eat, he would not sleep, the only thing he dared do was to sit and stare at the window looking at the sky. Death was looming over Jack, it was his shadow. Always with him, always following him. The day finally came when his shadow of death grew so large it was about to engulf him..yet there it was before him..the ghostly image of his dear mother hovering over his nearly lifeless form.
"Jack," She had said, her soft red lips touching his forehead as she gave her son a kiss. " Jack sweetie, look at yourself..where is the boy I remember being so happy to call my son?" Her smile shifted as her face turned somber. " I'm afraid for my baby. Jack, you are too young to go this way, I may not be here, but you have so many others who love you so much." She then proceeded to speak to him with the care and love that only her son knew so well. She named all his friends, his grannie, and then she mentioned HER. She mentioned the girl he hung around, and how much fun they would have. " Now is not your time sweetie, promise me you'll try to live."
Her smile returned to her pale face as young Jack raised his arms up to her. " I promise!! " Getting up, Jack looked like a twig twisted in the ground trying to bend back and see the sun. " You just wait! I'll be an old fart covered in liver spots complete with a lousy bladder! You better be able to recognize me mommy, I'll be bald and wrinkley! I promise!" He had called out to her as she faded away..
Jack was never meant to keep that promise. For fate caught up with him that dreary day, the day his life reached its end at the tender age of thirteen.
His last moment was spent running towards his friend, watching as her eyes had filled with fear. Before the shadow of death struck down and took Jack's life, he heard her scream to him, "Jack! LOOK OUT!" and he was gone the minute he turned his head and met face to face with the bumper of the car that was destined to snuff the light of his life away.
As he tumbled through the void of darkness, he felt nothing, heard nothing, and knew nothing. It seemed to him only moments ago he was interlocked in a battle to save his friend, and when he opened his eyes the the orange purple colored sky met his gaze while he was lying under a tall tree. And when its branches swayed it seemd to sing, "This our town we call home, we obey the Pumpkin song..".
