First Dreams
“Nork it’s really dark.” Kana muttered she couldn’t see anything, a dark place and a tiny light coming from, well, somewhere. “I know, I know.” Nork said and chuckled. “Tron always like this place.” He added and looked up. Kana could barely see him, but she knew what he looked like. Dark hair to his shoulders, his dark blue eyes and pale skin the normal person who lived in a place like this. “Why can’t I ever see your brother?” Kana asked and walked up next to him her hands shoved in her pockets. Nork sigh and looked down, “I told you I hate talking about that.” He muttered and looked up at her his eyes shining. “I know it’s just that I want to know about him.” She muttered and quickly looked away hating when he looked at her like that. “I’ll show you when I think you’re ready.” Nork said and walked forward.
Kana followed, whenever they were here, it was always dark. They had never been anywhere else though. All Kana wanted to ask Nork was where was his brother? Why were they here? She even wanted to know who Nork really was. “Nork…” she started but was interrupted, “Don’t start asking me s**t!” Nork snapped and looked back at her baring his teeth. Kana noticed for once another well, side, of him, and then it all went blank as light surrounded her. She tried to scream Nork’s name wanting to find him again, but he was gone.
The Real Life
“Kana, Kana!” a voice was shouting. Kana slapped away a hand touching her shoulder. “What?!” she snapped. But the only person there was her friend Minnie who chuckled, “Damn you can sleep.” Minnie said and walked over, and started to wipe down the counter. Kana slowly sat up remembering where she was, her job. Her job, the thought rang in her head and sighed. She clenched a pony tail holder between her teeth as she pulled up her shoulder-length brown hair. She looked at the clock, “It’s only midnight?!” Kana almost screamed clenching her hair tighter. “Yeah, and you’ve been asleep for the past hour.” Minnie snapped and through the damp rag at her face. Kana fell out of her chair with a thud and threw the rag to the ground. “Don’t tell me you only woke me to tell me you have to go.” Kana muttered seeing Minnie grabbing her car keys. “Sorry, but I do, my mom still gets creeped out when I’m here past midnight.” She shrugged and waved as she walked out of the tiny café.
Kana wanted to scream, she was alone, again, at midnight in a café that has already been robbed like fifty-gazillion time in her opinion. She just shook it off, “I’ll be ok, I’ll be ok.” Kana muttered over and over to herself. Not many people came into the café this late at night, maybe three or four, at the most. She walked back into the kitchen and grabbed the rag and washed it out in the sink. But when she heard the small ring of the bell on the front door she froze, and slowly looked up.
Only a young man stood there, he didn’t look like he had a gun, or another weapon, but you could never be too sure. All she could look at was his pale skin, his dark, long hair it was almost as long as hers. It would have helped if he had pale lips, but his lips were a deep ruby red, and his eyes were a really light hazel, so light they almost looked golden. She slowly walked out as he went and sat down at a table. “C…can I help you?” she stammered ready to run out of the door if he had a gun. “A medium cup of coffee, black,” the boy said plainly and looked up at her. Kana nodded, “Coming right up.” She said and walked back into the kitchen. “Are you the only one here?” she heard his voice call from the table. She slowly looked out the window at him, she reminded him of someone, but who? “Yeah for now,” she said trying to be as friendly as possible. She forced a smiled as she walked back out with the coffee, it was steaming and it was burning her hands even under the plate holding the cup. “Be careful, it’s really hot.” Kana said setting down the cup. The boy smiled up at her, “I figured that.” He said and picked up the bare cup taking a sip, letting the hot liquid sting his throat.
Kana slowly sat down across from him and looked as he sat down the cup on the plate. “What?” he asked and looked at her, with a questionable look. “Nothing, it’s just not many people can hold a cup that hot that long.” She said and actually gave a small laugh. He looked at his hands as if wanting to see if he was burnt, he shrugged, “I’m used to it.” He said, looking back up at her. Kana was about to ask how but she was stopped, “Kana?” he asked looking at her name tag on her chest, “Yeah weird name right?” she asked and laughed. “Not any weirder than mine.” The boy laughed leaning his chair back, putting his hands on the table so he wouldn’t fall over. “Oh really then what is it?” Kana asked leaning her head on her hands with interest. “Kron.” He said and looked at her, “Strange right?” he said but smiled. “Compared to my name? No.” she said and smiled back.
Kron laughed as he leaned forward, letting the chair hit the ground, he picked up his coffee cup and took another gulp, but this time he drank almost a fourth of the large glass. “Do you want more?” Kana asked and stood up pushing her chair back into another table, but didn’t care. Kron looked at her before pulling out his duck-tape wallet and looked at the contents. Kana walked over behind Kron and looked over his shoulder, she saw a picture of him and another male about his age, they were both laughing and smiling. “Who’s that?” Kana asked pointing to the other figure, “J...just a friend.” He muttered and pulled open the pocket and pulled out two dollar bills. “I don’t think I have enough.” He said changing the subject and waving the money in the air. Kana grabbed the money feeling the paper crinkle under her grasp, “It’s on me.” She said and smirked as she walked back into the kitchen popping the money into the cash register.
A broad smile appeared on Kron’s face as he looked at her, “A little flirty are we?” Kron said and chuckled loudly. Kana froze her face reddening, but she looked out the window, “Watch it I’m the one giving you coffee.” She said and even gave a smirk, before looking back down. “Alright, alright.” He said and smiled leaning his chair back again. The instant she walked in, he pulled out his cell phone. “Do you have a cell?” he asked flipping open his own cell. She sat down the coffee and nodded, she pulled it out of her apron the also held her ordering pad, straws, and other things waitresses carried. “Here, put in your number.” Kron said handing her his cell phone and took hers. She went to the entry list and was completely shocked to see no numbers on the list, no mom, no dad, not even friends. When she looked at him he was typing in his number, and she did the same, she even put in the café’s number and her house phone. “Here ya’ go.” Kron said and held out her phone. “Thanks.” She said grabbing her phone and giving him his.
Kron took another swig of coffee and looked at the clock. “I have to go do you mind if I call you later?” he asked as he stood pushing his chair back in, with a small screech. “Sure that should be fine.” She said and smiled. Kron smiled back, “I’ll talk to you then.” He said and walked out leaving Kana alone once again. “I’ll be ok, I’ll be ok.” She thought.
The Call and the Meeting
Kana was just walking out of the restaurant, locking the door when lightning sounded around her. She shivered when the cool rain beat against her skin. Then she jumped giving a yelp when her phone rang, she stumbled with her phone as she quickly flipped it open, “H…hello?” she stammered her voice was quivering. There was only a chuckle on the other line, “What’s wrong you scared?” the male voice said and she knew it was Kron. “Shut up.” Kana snapped as she walked down the road. “Wow you really are scared, you’re shivering.” Kron said, “Wait, how do you know that?” she said looking around. “I’m a mystic.”Kron said in a ghost like voice. Kana heard a voice but it wasn’t on the phone, she turned back around and Kron was there behind her, his long hair plastered to his head, as well as his clothes plastered to his body. “How long have you been there?” she asked. Kron just shrugged putting his phone up, “Not long.” He said and pulled off his jacket and letting it hang from Kana’s shoulders. She shivered lightly feeling his hands touch her shoulders for a brief moment. The jacket was cold on the inside, but it was dry so she didn’t care. “Thanks.” She said slowly, pulling it tighter around her shoulders. Kron nodded, “Let’s at least get you out of the rain.” He said and put one hand on the small of her back, pushing her forward. Kana actually blushed when he touched her, wondering where he was taking her, she looked around to see if she knew where they were.
“Where are we?” she asked looking around not recognizing where they were. “My house.” He said and kept urging her forward. “You live here?” she asked in shock looking around. The neighborhood was a dump really, all of the houses had signs saying to “stay out”, or “danger no trespassing”, she even heard a dog bark in the distance. Kron just chuckled, “Yeah.” He said before taking his free hand and pulling out his keys. He opened the door, which sounded like a thousand frogs croaking all together. “After you.” He said putting out one hand as if leading her in.
When she got in she was shocked, the house inside was very…elegant. There was a chandelier hanging from the ceiling that started to glitter when Kron turned on the light. There was a red satin couch sitting in the middle of the living room. There was an old fashioned table with multiple books stacked one on top of the other. “You like it?” Kron asked, breaking her from her awed trance. She quickly nodded, “It’s beautiful.” She said. “Thanks, it was fun to decorate.” Kron said and walked past her and plopped down on a brown leather chair that didn’t look vintage like the other pieces. “Well come on make yourself at home.” He said spreading his arms out, “My house is your house.” He added before leaning his head back so he was looking at the ceiling. Kana slowly walked over and sat down on the couch, setting Kron’s jacket on the arm. “Throw it where ever I don’t care.” He said his hands flailing as he talked.
“How long have you lived here?” Kana asked changing the subject. Kron shrugged, “You loose track after years.” He said. “Well it couldn’t have been that long.” Kana said as she leaned her head back, looking up at the ceiling again. “Do you really want to know?” he asked sitting up and turned to look at her. “Why not?” she asked and picked her head up to look at him. “What if I told you I’ve been here for over fifty years?” he asked. “Then I would say your lying.” She said. “What if I told you I wasn’t human?” he asked resting his arms on his legs. Then the story began.
The Truth
“Y…you’re a troll?” she whispered she couldn’t believe she let him bring her here. “Yeah,” Kron muttered slowly and looked at her, “Surprised?” he asked flashing a crooked smile. For once Kana noticed his canine teeth, pointed. “Yeah.” She said shivering seeing his teeth, and his smile, it was….beautiful. “You can go if you’re scared; I’m not here to stop you.” He said lightly a small frown appearing on his face. “You didn’t bring me here to…” then she was interrupted because Kron was at her side, and she never noticed him move, “Why would I do that?!” he said with pleading eyes. “I just thought…” and she stopped again.
“I haven’t explained have I?” he asked and sat down in front of her. “Explained what?” Kana asked confusion on her face. “I don’t feed on people.” He said softly, “On animals instead, sometimes people if completely needed.” He said quickly, and relief flooded over Kana, well a little bit. “Even though it doesn’t fill me as much as humans but it saves human lives.” He said. “At least I’m not in danger.” Kana muttered her hand over her heart. “Just don’t cut yourself.” Kron said and leaned back against the pillow. “Why?” Kana asked turning to look at him, “Because I can’t stop myself when I see blood,” he paused, “Well I can barely stop myself.” He added quickly. “Well I’ll be careful then.” She said and gave a small bit of a playful smile. Kron’s face was still serious, “You better be Kana, you better be.” He repeated himself, looking at the ceiling.
After what seemed to be forever Kana finally broke the silence, “How often do you have to feed?” she asked slowly, and looked at Kron, she was surprised, he was thinking about this. “I don’t know, usually every other day, sometimes once a week.” he shrugged. “When was the last…” and Kana was interrupted quickly. “Two days ago.” Kron said and cocked his head, “Why do you think I would hurt you?” he asked, his eyes darkening, as if hurt. “No, no it’s not that!” Kana said remembering the same instance earlier. Kron walked over and plopped down on the couch next to her, making the cushion underneath them both bounce lightly. “I sound a lot like a blood sucking creature don’t I?” He said and gave a small sigh. Kana sat up and gave Kron a small glare, “Yeah, but I still fell safe, do you promise me I am safe here?” She said slowly. “I promise.” He said holding up his right hand, as a promise to Kana, and for once she could tell she smiled wider than ever before.
On the Way Home
“What time is it?” Kana asked, she knew it was late, she left work at two and her dad always expected her home by three. Kron looked at his watch, “It’s four o’ clock.” He said and looked back up at her from his watch. “I have to go, now!” Kana said loudly, and felt a shot of pain come up from her foot when she hit the table leg. In an instant she felt a rush of wind and something grab her before she hit the ground, and she looked up and shock seeing Kron there a worried look on his face, “Are you alright?” Kron asked as he pulled her back so she was sitting on the couch again. Kana slowly nodded, “But how did you do that, I didn’t even see you move.” She said looking at him in amazement. “I have certain, powers.” He said slowly, he paused before he said ‘powers’ as if searching for the right word. “Like what?” Kana asked slowly, “Just things.” Kron said softly, “Come on let’s get you home.” He said and picked her up, like a groom would carry a bride over the threshold. Kana actually gave a small laugh, wrapping her arms around his neck so she wouldn’t think, “What you think I will drop you?” Kron said and laughed. “You better not.” Kana said in a threatening voice, yet it was still playful. Kron smiled and he pretended to drop her, Kana gave a small squeak before Kron caught her again, and he just laughed. “Haha, very funny,” Kana said and laughed dryly. “Yeah it was wasn’t it?” Kron said as he shouldered his way out the door a large smile on his face. “Just take me home.” Kana said and rolled her eyes. “Well tell me where it is first.” Kron said and continued to walk before turning the corner.
After about fifteen to twenty minutes of walking Kron turned another corner, Kana was in his arms fast asleep as he walked, and he looked down at her and shook his head with a small smile. Kana muttered something under her breath and he looked down at her with questionable look.
“You coming Kana?” Nork asked and smiled at her, “Well of course, where else do I have to go?” Kana asked and followed Nork closely. “Good, this was.” He said putting his arm around her shoulder and guiding her further into the darkness. Kana smiled closing her eyes, she leaned her head against Nork’s shoulder.
Kron looked down at Kana as her head leaned against his shoulder, he cocked his had lightly and turned another corner, still holding Kana closely, and he stopped, hearing thunder he looked up. Then the rain began to pour down on his face, a small spread across his face as he slipped of his jacket and put it over her body to protect her from the rain.
“What’s that?” Kana asked looking around as her and Nork turned yet another corner, “Come on it’s probably going to rain.” Nork said and put his jacket on Kana’s shoulders. “How many times did I tell you I can handle a little rain?” Kana asked and smiled closing her eyes lightly. Nork just shrugged, “I like the rain.” He said softly, his eyes gleaming as he smiled and looked to the sky.
Kana slowly fluttered open her eyes to look at Kron, “What…?” Kana started but stopped seeing his jacket over her body, “I can handle a little rain.” She said softly and smiled at him. Kron looked down at her and smiled softly, the rain made his pale skin look like it was glowing, “It’s fine I don’t mind the rain.” He said softly and smiled. “Go back to sleep, we’re almost there.” Kron added quickly with a smile.
“You alright Kana?” she heard the voice before she saw who it came from, but when she opened her eyes she saw Nork kneeling next to her. “Yeah, but what happened?” Kana asked slowly sitting up and rubbing her head lightly. “You passed out.” Nork said softly, and helped her stay up. “For how long?” Kana asked slowly looking at Nork, who shrugged. “Maybe two, three minutes.” He said softly, “Not that long,” he added. “That’s good I was worried for a minute.” Kana said and yawned, “Go ahead and go to sleep, you should rest.” Kron said softly. “Are you sure?” Kana asked, and Kron just nodded. Kron moved so her head was on his lap, and he was leaning against a tree, his eyes closed as well. Kana smiled and slowly closed her eyes.
Kana slowly opened her eyes and when she did so she was surprised, she was back in her room on her bed, and she was even in her pajamas. But the strange part was that Kron was leaning against the bed post, his eyes closed, and her head was in his lap. “K…Kron?” Kana said softly. “Hmm?” Kron said slowly opened his eyes, and looked down at Kana with a small smile.
Thruth, Reality, and the Game
"What do you mean you changed me?!” Kana half-yelled sitting up covering herself with the blanket, Kron just laughed, a tear filled his eye because he was laughing so hard. He fell off the bed with a large thud Kana crawled over to look at him but he was still on the floor rolling around in laughter, “Y…you should have seen your face!” Kron howled with laughter clutching his stomach, and anger spread across Kana’s face. “You could have got me up!” Kana said and flipped over so her feet were now kicking Kron in the side, who just laughed harder, before slowly getting his composure and sat up, and wiped a tear from his eye. “But you looked so happy sleeping.” Kron chuckled, leaning back against the night stand by Kana’s bed. “Oh come on, I would rather be waken from sleeping then some boy changing me!” Kana snapped crossing her arms over her chest. Kron shrugged, “Oh well it’s too late now.” Kron chuckled, trying to ignore the fact that Kana’s cheeks were blushed with embarrassment. “Why are you still here anyways, I thought you were just going to take me home.” Kana pouted and slowly turned to look at him. Kron looked up at her and scrunched his legs so they were against his chest, and wrapped his arms around them. “I don’t know maybe because I just wanted to see you reaction.” Kron chuckled giving a bit of an evil smile.
“Kron, do you have a brother?” Kana asked suddenly remembering Nork now for some reason. Kron slowly looked at her, a bit of sadness in his eyes and nodded, “Yeah, well I did I haven’t seen him in a couple of years.” He sighed. “How long is a couple?” Kana asked slowly and slipped off the bed to sit next to him. Kron shrugged, “Around three, or four years, you take your pick.” Kron muttered, leaning his chin on his legs. “What’s his name?” Kana asked, “Stop asking me this s**t.” Kron muttered and stood in a swift motion, “I don’t like to talk about my brother, really, I don’t remember much of him besides he’s my twin, identical twins if you want to get technical. I was born second, three and a half minutes after him. We both have really light eyes, except his are blue, and he cut his hair so people could tell us apart, since we usually wore sunglasses. Kron said slowly pulled out his wallet and looked at the picture of him and the other boy. Now Kana could see the similarities, the both had the pale skin and were both tall and lean. But is the picture, they were smiling, Kron arm was around the other boys shoulder, they looked about twelve or thirteen. “How old are you?” Kana was looking over Kron’s shoulder, although she had to stay on her toes, because he was so tall. “Now or in the picture?” Kron asked turning to look at her, which made her pull her face back, so she wouldn’t make either of them feel uncomfortable. “Both.” Kana stated and walked to his side so she could look at the picture, “Now I’m seventy-five, in this picture, I was thirteen.” He said and looked back at the picture. Kana could tell it had to be old; the picture was in black and white.
“Ok, will you play a game with me?” Kana asked and sat down on her bed, cross-legged. “Sure, what are the rules?” Kron asked sitting down next to her. “I ask you ten yes or no questions, you have to answer, but you don’t have to go into detail unless you want to.” Kana said the rule quickly and clearly. Kron narrowed his eyes for a moment, and slowly nodded, “Shoot.” He said, and lied down closing his eyes, knowing he would be here for a while. “Alright number one, did you have parents?” Kana asked, and Kron nodded, “Yeah.” He said simply, Kana had a feeling he wouldn’t go into detail about anything. “Are they still alive?” Kana asked, “No.” Kron said and opened his eyes and looked at her. “Did you have any other siblings besides beside your brother?” Kana asked next, she already had a list in your head. “Yes, a sister.” Kron said, and closed his eyes again. “Alright question number four, was she killed by someone?” Kana asked, “Yeah, my dad.” Kron muttered lightly, the last part harder to hear then the first. “Was your dad a troll?” Kana asked this was getting a bit more interesting. “Yes.” Kron said simply, “And your mom?” Ka added. “No.” Kron said giving a small sigh. “Did you ever love someone?” Kana asked. That one wasn’t on her first list, but it just popped out. Kron slowly sat up and looked at her, “Can I skip one?” he asked slowly. Kana thought for a moment and nodded, “Just one.” She said, “Then I want to skip that one.” Kron said and lied back down closing his eyes again. “Alright did anyone ever love you?” she asked, and Kron just nodded. “Do you want to be human?” Kana asked next, and Kron shrugged, “Yes and no.” he said. “Ok last one.” Kana said before continuing, “Is your brother’s name Nork?” she asked, and Kron shot up, his eyes now wide open.
“H…how did you?” Kron couldn’t speak, all his words were choppy. “I’ve meet him in my dreams.” Kana muttered softly, “I just looked at the picture and the Nork I knew, and the one in the picture looked so similar, I just thought they were the same but it sounded stupid.” Kana said and looked at Kron. “You’ve talked to him, how is he?” Kron asked grabbing Kana’s wrist, “Tell me please I haven’t seen him in so long.” Kron said, Kana couldn’t believe he looked like he was about to cry. “Every time I ask him about his brother, he changes the subject.” Kana muttered softly, “He fine, but I only see him in my dreams, I’ve never actually met him.” She added, she decided not to tell Kron that she and Nork loved each other, but now she knew he was real, and not just a fragment of her imagination.
Kron nodded and slowly let go of her wrist, “Will you tell him something for me?” he asked slowly giving a hopeful smile. “Of course,” Kana said and smiled back at him. “Tell him to meet me at the old oak, he’ll know what it means.” Kron said and smiled a bit wider before hopping off the bed.
