Ep 1. The Daily Grind
"What would you like today sir?" It was the same waitress every day. She seemed to take a liking to Varian when she realized how big of a tip he gave. Looking up from his newspaper Varian flashed a friendly smile. Varian said "The usual please." before looking back to his paper. The waitress did a cute curtsey before she went off but Varian didn't notice. He was too busy reading the headline of the day's paper. In large bold letters across the top read "Another Mysterious Murder!" Varian rubbed his eyes in frustration. Another murder? So soon? His boss was not going to be happy about this.

Folding his paper he set his paper to the side as the waitress brought his coffee to him. She smiled as Varian looked up to her "Your food will be ready in a moment sir." She seemed perkier today than usual. Varian decided he would leave her a nice tip since her attitude was so uplifting. The people outside the diner seemed so uninteresting as they walked by going about their daily lives. It didn't take long for the waitress long to bring Varian's food to him, and as always it smelled delicious. A routine breakfast for a routine day...and now routine murder to go along with it. Varian stared at his omelet, heat rising from it in visible steam. Taking a sip of his coffee Varian quickly finished off his meal. Normally he would have savored it but he wanted to get the griping out done early.

A quick wipe of his mouth with a napkin and Varian was on his feet, paying his bill and leaving a nice tip for Ms. Friendly Waitress. Waving Varian lowered his brown fedora onto his head he took stepped out of the diner. The wind hit him like a bucket of cold water. Varian quickly made his way to his blue impala, unlocking the door with a quick press of a button. The drive was imbedded in his mind. He didn't need to watch the road as he drove, stopped, and turned. it was all a part of his subconscious. So was the next part. Varian pulled into his parking spot at the detective agency and made his way to his office.

"DuFrey!" Charles voiced boomed down the hallway, causing many employees to turn their heads. Varian hunched his shoulders as he turned to face his boss. "Here we go..." Charles was storming down the hall as if Varian had slept with his wife. Like that would ever happen... Varian thought. She is as ugly as a rhino. ...but Varian would never say that to Charles's face. Speaking of Charles's face it was bright red, which made Varian smile, and in turn made Charles all the angrier.

"DuFrey! How long ago did you say you would have this solved?!?" Varian rolled his eyes. He had only taken the job to get Charles to shut up about no one wanting the job, but now that he had, Charles was on his case more than ever. Varian wanted a cigarette at that point. "Two months ago! Two ******** months!" Charles moved into Varian's face, their noses touching, and unfortunately Varian could smell his rancid breath. "Have you read the news today DuFrey!? Have you?? Another one dead! This time just a lad!" Charles wouldn't step down, Varian knew. Not when all the employees were watching him. Normally Charles would back off and storm off to his office, but he wasn't about to seem weak in front of everyone. Varian sighed as he stepped back "These things take time boss." Varian said calmly "I have no leads, no traces of evidence. Whoever is doing this is no amateur." Charles exhaled; spit flying from his massive mouth.

"You have two weeks DuFrey! Two god damn weeks! If you don't have the culprit behind bars by then you're FIRED!" Charles, in all his blood lust and fury turned his back to Varian and stormed into his office slamming the door behind him with enough force to shake the paintings all down the halls. The employees stared at Varian as he shook his head and turned back to his office "How I love the Daily Grind..." Sitting at his desk Varian glanced at the clock hanging on his wall. The hands ticked by ever so slowly. The time said 7:45 am. Varian looked at the papers neatly stacked on his desk. It was true that he didn't have any leads. Every crime scene he investigated was bone dry, the most he could tell was that the victims had been cut open, their bellies left with their intestines hanging out to dry.

Seven in total counting this latest one. Seven bodies found with their intestines spewed across the streets and alleys on display, some freak show's works of art. Opening his desk Varian drew his last carton of cigarettes out and opened it. He let the cancer stick hang loosely from his lips as he lit it with his lighter, using his free hand to shield the flame from any source that might quell its life. The lighter had his initials engraved into it, the last gift from Varian's father before he died. He inhaled deeply, the flames sucking away at the life of the cigarette. His father always told him that his smokes would be the death of him, how ironic that Varian's father died in a house fire. Smoke whisked from his mouth as Varian sighed, looking over his desk at the failure of a case he had presented. One puff was all Varian took before extinguishing the fire of his cigarette. Varian rubbed his temples, overly agitated at his job.

Eventually however he stood, brushing all the useless papers off his desk and into the trash. Throwing the cigarette pack back into the desk he replaced it with his 9mm handgun. It's a familiar feeling in his hands as Varian holsters it. The employees have gone back to their routines, working for their wages so they can go home and fuel whatever addictions they might have. Varian exited the Agency and got into his car. His hands gripped the wheel tight, another disappointment was right around the block of this god forsaken town. Varian slipped his hand into his trench coat, pulling his cell phone from the inside pocket. Flipping it open his finger mashed the one button and the speed dial rang out. Varian moved the phone to his ear as he started the engine "…This is DuFrey. I'm on my way to the crime scene, let the boys know."
