A bear journal.
A series of logs by Ebele Roderick. [TBE]
Eurydice:
[Log 1 - Finding Eurydice (Dates 12/5/18 - 1/5/19)]

Rice and I were walking around the city as usual, running an errand for Arnold. I remember him wanting me to give a client the current update of the case we took about a background check on a business.

I did that and we were on our way back when I sensed the presence of a bear. Not like my family members, but an actual bear. I follow it and discover a bear with flowers going through the trash in an alleyway.

[Log 2 - Hanging with Eurydice(Dates 1/6/19 - 2/6/19)]

Arnold didn't like the fact that I came back to the office with a bear, but in the terrified sense. He kept eyeing the door leading up to his apartment as he kept talking to me, talking about how bears aren't pets and that clients will get "scared shitless". So I opted to have her stay at my apartment until we found where her home was.

I first started contacting animal control services and the like about a loose bear and reportings. By phone, for I didn't want to get lectured about keeping a bear. Of course they tell me about how a woman walking around with a bear in plain sight is strange, but that because it appears that Eurydice is my pet, don't intervene. On one hand, I guess so since they must see strange creatures on a daily basis, but on the other...? Some help you are.

I'd like to call governmental resources, but both Arnie and I can't approach them without them thinking ulterior motives, which leaves us with either contacting dad (not Arnie's favorite idea) or using off-the-radar resources to figure it out for ourselves. I tried my own pool of sources, trying to ask people I know about unusual creatures things, any information or if there were any people around tailing the bear, and...Nothing. Or at least, they don't want to tell me. At that point, Arnold told me to not worry about it and let him handle it.

Which turned into several days of getting used to having Eurydice around and not doing anything to actually get her habitat location resolved.

She follows me everywhere, like as if I'm her mother. Sometimes I get that maternal instinct to protect her, but she's an adult bear, so that's backwards. There are times where she gets fussy, but no signs of aggression, really. Expression remains as calm as possible and I don't have a single reason to fear her.

I also notice that Eurydice stares a lot. With me, with Arnie, too, like as if she's listening in on our conversations almost. I'm not sure why, but it can be very mysterious at times.

[Log 3 - Eurydice suddenly attacked. (Date: 2/7/19)]

Arnold told me that he found out where Eurydice's home is. Was looking at a location for another case and "snooped too hard". I thought it was great right up until he told me about the facility. Some type of facility that was formerly an abandoned building, off-limits to the public. Top secret. Dangerous, if weaponry and booby traps were anything to go by. I don't know how Eurydice got out of there, but now we know where she was being held.

I had questions, though: if Eurydice was so important to them, then why were there no signs of them searching for her? Why were these guards heavily armed guarding a building and doing absolutely nothing in their power to locate an animal they were researching?

...Arnie told her in a gentle manner of the location and how she can go back and she immediately went to a now exposed location in the office where he stored some of the files I'm not allowed to view, grabbed them with her mouth, and went for the door, shouting muffled "NO"'s over and over. That's when Arnold pulls out his pistol and runs after her. He doesn't shoot till after he gets a deep gash to the arm from physically trying to remove the files from her mouth.

Which brings me to wonder why he spoke to Eurydice like that?

Rice tells me not to blame myself, but it IS my fault. I was the one that made it my responsibility to take her into the agency from the beginning, the one that got attached to her, even gave her a name. Without asking her. Not once was I ever suspicious that Eurydice understanding us would even be an issue. Maybe I was easily fooled, the fact that I actually grew attached to her where her behavior was so normalized that not even Rice would be suspicious. I should've called dad, even if I knew that Arnold wouldn't like it, but, for once, I wanted to try to figure things out on my own when it comes to my kind. But I failed. It went over my head and I got distracted by her docile nature.

Now she's staying put, yelling at Arnold, threatening to shred the files, not caring that Arnold was gonna put a bullet to her head and that Martha's enlarged talons were wrapped around her neck. I'm looking at him, and he looks like he really doesn't wanna put her down, and I don't want him to, but he's yelling, angry at her, demanding her to give the files back.

[Log 3.5 - (Date: ???)]

It took a bit, but they eventually stopped shouting at each other. Arnold looks exhausted and Eurydice, for some reason, reverted back to her calm self. Its unnerving. Martha let go of her, even, asking "Are we done, now?". I'm not sure, Martha, honestly. Maybe we can talk about this without...Are those sirens? Oh no.
