This is just a simple mussing to organize some thoughts.
Most people, when they come up with a character, try to be unique and original. After minutes, hours or days people decide that they have finally made a character unlike any other, a character of such individuality that none shall ever see another like it as long as they live. This hero is often a demon, angel, or mage with some conflicting past. A demon who fell in love with an angel or a character that is the offspring of such characters. Many others think they are clever by making a cute looking character that is actually evil or an evil looking character that is good. In all honesty these combinations are the most common and unoriginal things that can be found.
How many times have you role played with someone who had a character that was a warrior with no magic powers that liked muffins? Most likely you haven't, but for some reason we think that simple things like that are completely unoriginal and thus we become unoriginal by trying to avoid something simple. So in a way the originality most people think they have is nothing more than an illusion, one perpetuated by the fact most people ignore all the other people around them, so much so they fail to notice they are exactly the same.
The simple things are often much better than we give them credit for. After all, reading a novel about a normal warrior who likes muffins trying to save the world, is more interesting than an all powerful demigod half demon that has cat ears trying to do the same thing. The warrior has to try and fight and pull off amazing feats of dumb luck and swordplay while the all powerful kitten demon just twitches funny and everything dies. Makes for a boring read and makes it near impossible to give any substantial plot. Aside from them having to fight of more kitten demons.
Just keep in mind that kitten demons appear in 24% of all anime and manga and 75% of the Gaia population. Also 85% of all statistics are made up.
