Quote: Almost weekly, I get asked, "How can I know what God wants me to do?"
Sometimes the questions come in regard to choices about a person's future, sometimes their relationships. While other times, people are looking to know how they should choose a church, college, or what they should order for dinner (just kidding).
Although there are no formulas for discovering God's will, I take great comfort in knowing that He does want me to know His will actually, He wants me to be able to test and approve, His good, pleasing, and perfect will. (Romans 12:2).
And the Bible talks directly about that process of gaining wisdom in the book of James.
"If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (1:5).
In that verse, you are given permission to ask. So, if you need to know what He wants you to do with your life, how He wants you to live, or if you are searching for answers to some of your serious questions, God says ask, and wisdom will be given.
I believe in the moment that you ask for wisdom it is given to you. That is why the next verse states that when you ask you need to believe and not doubt, because if you doubt, you will be tossed back and forth unable to stand for anything, go anywhere good, or move forward.
I know that it sounds simple, but the moment that you ask, God whispers the answers into your heart. Sometimes he will tell you to go left down the proverbial path. Other times it will be right. Sometimes the wisdom that is whispered says wait (oh, I hate that one), other times the light is green. But, whatever you are facing, you can be assured that if you ask for wisdom, He will give it, but then you are responsible to act on it.
It would be easier if God sent memos that you could file away and refer back to, but he doesn't. He imparts wisdom to your spirit it never contradicts God's Word and it always leads towards His goals for your life.
So, what should you do the next time you have a major decision to make?
First off, make sure that you have an ongoing relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Actively pursue God even when you aren't in desperate need of direction through reading the Holy Scriptures, drawing near through worship, and aggressively praying for God's will to be done in your life, you are preparing yourself to tap into the storehouse of wisdom even before you are in a critical position.
Secondly, ask God for wisdom. He will give it. Don't be afraid to tell Him that you are confused. Don't be ashamed to admit that you need Him to guide you.
Next, act on what you sense in your heart. God will move you gently towards wisdom if you truly are submitted. Don't doubt, He promised you wisdom, and you have it. Now, act like it.
See, I believe that many people miss God's nudges because they wait for more clarity. They want a pillar of fire to lead them that worked back in the day, but for some reason God doesn't do that much anymore. He plants wisdom in our lives when we ask and gently leads us for our protection, blessing, and for His glory.
The wisdom of heaven is available to you as a child of God. All you have to do is ask.
Be blessed, Sean Dunn
