Anyella

By: Nightmare_Demise

Anyella had always been slightly different than the other humans. The strange wing like markings on her back had been concealed most of her life; it was easy enough to cover up something like that. It had worked for a good eighteen years, in fact. One morning, when she was eighteen, her life changed forever.
She groaned and yawned as she woke up that morning. After rubbing the sleep out of her eyes and throwing on some decent pants, she shuffled sleepily to the bathroom. She didn't quite notice any difference until she went to the sink to wash her face. Once her eyes were truly not blurry anymore, she gasped in shock.
Her hair suddenly had a few streaks of blue-white in it. Anyella pinched herself to make sure she actually was awake. The pinch sent a sting up her arm, but didn't change her hair. She suddenly wondered if the marking on her back had something to do with the sudden new color to her hair. After thinking about the markings, she immediately decided to check on them; just in case anything strange had happened to them as well.
Anyella pulled up her white t-shirt. Her marking, to her slight surprise, were starting to rise from her skin; looking quite a lot like the beginnings of wings. While she was touching her “wings” and wondering what this meant, she failed to notice that her hair had almost completely changed color already.
Once she finally paid attention to her hair again, her wings had also almost completely separated from her skin. She could no longer pull her shirt down over them. Suddenly, it hit her, she was truthfully a fairy. It all suddenly made sense; her strange powers that were almost not noticeable by many humans, the marking on her back, her hair, she was finally becoming her true self.
She changed into a blue dress that was open enough in the back to allow her new wings the needed room to function properly. By now, her hair was completely white-blue and she could move her wings with little effort. Anyella left her home that her mother had left to her and tried to find a place that she would belong in her small village. The village in which she lived sat on the outskirts of a large city, and housed a few houses and markets that obviously wouldn't belong in a large city.
While searching for acceptance, she noticed that she was being followed. At first, she dismissed them as fleeting shadows, but she soon found that they were much stronger, and much scarier. They had seen her wings and a thirst for her magic made their black eyes glitter with greed.
The darklings that were after her (for that was what they were) ran the kind of society in which any and all magic is to be stolen for their own selfish purposes. They had secretly been after her for some time, and she had known it. Some time ago, she first realized that these creatures were after her specifically.
This time, when she looked back, only one darkling followed her. She turned and faced him, but soon realized that he was quite different from the others. His eyes glittered in a happy and thoughtful way, and he responded quite nicely and politely to her questions.
“Why are you following me?”
“To tell you something.”
“What?”
“You need to know that they are planning to attack you today, and you will need to have your special powers ready to defend yourself, and the city for that matter.”
“How am I supposed to use them, if I never have had the ability to until today?”
“You will know what to do; it is in your instincts.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“I know that what the darklings are going to do is wrong. It pains me to be one of their kind,” his face showed genuine pain as he continued, “and this is the closest I’ll ever be to being a good guy.”
“There is always a choice between good and evil.”
He looked up with hope in his dark eyes, “Thank you, fairy, I will forever remember you!” And he was gone.
Anyella pondered over what he had meant; all the while preparing her mind for what was going to happen. She figured out how to do a few things; moving things with her mind, making things appear in a cloud of blue and white sparkles, and various charms and spells. The fairy knew that these were her only weapons against the coming attack of the darklings, so she practiced them for some time.
At about sunset, she could see the approaching creatures; like the lengthening shadows in the evening. They crawled, stalked, and crept closer to their prey. One of them among them, though, felt uncertain. He argued with himself in his head, and finally decided to do something totally unlike a darkling; to rebel.
The darklings attacked with claws and nets and tried to steal her fairy magic from her. In defense, she lifted objects and crushed them if they got too close. After a while of crushing a few darklings; only to have them crawl out from under the objects and continue their attacks, she decided to use a different approach.
With charms and spells, she caused all kinds of injury. She did everything from freeze them in place, to make them lose their memories and stand there in confusion. These attacks seemed to work for a while, but the darklings soon attacked in high numbers, making it difficult for her to cast her magic abilities on all of them. The high numbers caused her to become frantic. They weren't only coming after her now; they were destroying buildings and capturing people in wooden cages.
Anyella fought her best, but her best was no longer enough. While the fairy fought to keep the darklings away from her, a certain darkling actually turned on his own kind and began slashing and clawing them. The sudden traitor caused much chaos in the attack. Darklings were confused and didn't know whether to attack the fairy or the sudden betrayer. During the confusion, the fairy and the single darkling had a great advantage over the stumbling and shocked darklings.
The fairy flew above the wave of dark creatures, and was surprised to find that a vast majority of them were preoccupied by a growing mosh-pit looking throng towards the center of their unorderly ranks. Darklings slashed at each other trying to find the traitor and bring him to his senses, but he was far from their reach by the time the darklings had realized that he was one of them.
Watching from the roof of a building, the darkling looked for the fairy. He soon spotted her, flying above the squabbling darklings. He waved to her from the shadows of the roof. Luckily, she saw his signal and flew over to join him.
“That was your doing, wasn't it?”
“Yes, how could you tell?”
“Just a hunch.”
The fairy and the rebel darkling watched as the baffled darklings destroyed their own ranks, a few at a time. The mosh-pit had turned quite fatal, and they were soon mindlessly fighting each other. Cries, shrill shrieks, and other strange noises erupted from the fighting throng and echoed throughout even the large city.
A fight between an army of darklings obviously lasts a long time, as they are all trained the same. They soon destroyed their own forces, with only a few stragglers left over. Once only a few darklings remained, hours later, they shot each other bewildered looks and ran savagely away from the bloody remnants of their friends and family. It is amazing how much damage a group of darklings can do when they set their minds to it.
After they grew bored of watching the darklings slaughter each other, Anyella and the darkling escaped the roof and went to her house. There, over a cup of tea, they discussed that evening’s happenings.
The fairy started off the conversation after they had settled down with their fresh peach green tea, “It looks as if you have become a good guy after all.”
The darkling sipped his tea and shrugged, “Guess so.”
“Do you know all that that means for you?”
“Actually, no.”
“You will be respected for who you are, not what you are, but you will never truly fit in anywhere; you won’t have a true home, no matter where you go.”
“Oh… I never thought of it that way. Where shall I stay?!”
The fairy looked thoughtful for a second, “There is an abandoned house on the outer edge of the village. You could easily stay there, but it might not be good shelter.”
“If it is a structure, it’s good enough for me!”
With that being said, the two friends said farewell and parted with a promise to meet again. They did actually meet, many times, to fight evil creatures of all kinds. They actually became legendary to the locals and were quite respected by most. Anyella obtained and learned to have many more abilities and the darkling soon found that he had the ability of shadow-like powers that proved pretty useful to fighting evil. All in all, they both became extremely powerful over time, and they never stopped defending the village against the forces of evil.

I hope everything is as you hoped it would be. It is 1575 words long.
