This is what my sketches look like. I usually have references around, too. This is a drawing on my avatar. Scanned version is here.
With the sketch, I made this! I make the outline, sketch the areas I fill shade in, shade, add highlights, then add in chalk. When shading, I never see people emphasis highlights or lighter areas. It's just darkening, darkening. . . ( O A O ) Remember to lighten too!
I used white gel pen for the highlights in the eyes, hair, and the headphone wires. I have gellyroll to make things sparkle!
I like to keep sketches in a sketchbook. A scanned version of the image is here.
__________
COPICS!
I used 13 of the 30 copic markers I have. (By the way, it's pronounced COH-pics) Ihate those markers that claim to be 'manga/comic' markers, they don't blend well, and they attract people by having "manga-influenced" pictures on the cover. . oh my, my mother wants to use my copics for card making. .
I should've taken WIP pictures of this one. Either way, I ALWAYS do the skin first, then did the light blues, then blacks. When coloring the skin, I use the 2nd dark skin color and go over the shadows, add a little bit of the darkest color, then blend everything. After the paper is dry, I go over the dark colors again. There really isn't an EXACT way to shade. I usually do what looks right, as long as you show a distinct light-source.
I keep a scrap of paper to test how colors interact with eachother. I cut my copic colored drawings out a lot, so I always have scrap paper to recycle. Remember kids, RECYCLE.
Yes, yes, of course. I CUT it out, but I added a background. Papercutters are fun to play with. ( v ____ v ) I ran out of DS tape, so I have to use GLUE. gununu. . When making the stairs, you have to HAVE a focal point, or else it's LAME. What am I talking about? Well, those Chris Hart how to draw MANGA books with "some" good non-mutated art was actually proving a point, or was that part of the "Idiots guide to" series? Hmm, whatever.
The cut-out of Kimchi pops out, how is that? Ancient Chinese secret.

PAINTING. Something I'm novice with. ( o ________ e )
Whatever, practice, practice, practice!
I have a very light outline of what I'm painting. Eye droppers make mixing colors easier. Get some. I feel too novice to explain everything--
Added blue. Water changes everything.
Skin colors. They are annoying to mix.
I love prussian blues. Added blacks.
"Fixed" (ruined) things up.
YEAH. I cut it out. No background. ( v _____ v ) Truthfully, I don't like it. So I must keep practice!
