Salem: Welcome to Gaia Radio’s AVGNFMR. For those who don’t know this is a video game-related radio show designed around comedy and news, as well as revealing game release dates and game reviews. For those not in the know, AVGNFMR stands for “All the video game news that’s fit to make up radio”, there’s a bit of history behind that but you can always check out my forum on Gaia Radio’s guild for more information. Since time is short, or long depending on how you classify 25 minutes, let’s get right into – <thump>. What the <thump>. This seems familiar. <thump>
Nomed: Mother [bleep], I gotta lay off the donuts.
Salem: That’s probably a great idea. Did you fall down the stairs or what?
Nomed: I teleported, jackass. I’m here for the co-host gig.
Aussie: Sorry mate, already taken.
Nomed: B-But I need the job!
Salem: Like he said, it’s already been taken. But uh, if you want you can handle janitorial duties.
Nomed: I got ripped off on this.
Aussie: Anyway, let’s begin with the first news story, Salem?
Salem: Thanks, Aussie McAustralian.
Nomed: <in the background> It’s obviously a fake name!
Salem: <clears throat> PlayStation Network is back online. It was April 20th that the PlayStation Network had been taken down by an external intrusion on their systems. Sony acknowledged they had been hacked by an anonymous source, after contracting two security agencies Sony released a public statement that they had been hacked and personal information had been taken. Despite lack of evidence that Credit Card information had been taken in a useful form, Sony declaring that the Credit Card information was heavily encrypted, they mentioned users would be allowed, through AllClear ID Plus powered by Debix, identity theft protection and up to 1 million dollars of identity theft insurance that United States users could be enrolled in for 12 months free of charge. No word currently on other countries and what Sony will be doing for them. They began rebuilding the PlayStation Network from the ground up following the attacks. Aussie?
Aussie: On May 1st Sony announced the “Welcome Back” program for all PSN members and detailed that the network would return, however not a day later did Sony Online Entertainment become the target of another hack, bringing it down which delayed the return of the PSN.
Salem: Sony had reported a file left on their network titled “Anonymous”, opening said file showed “We are legion”, a catchphrase of known hacker, and I use the term loosely, group called Anonymous. H-Hold on, I’m uh, getting breaking news. Aussie McAustralian is apparently offending our Australian demographic and…as of immediately…fired.
Aussie: That’s a load of bollocks! I’m nothing if not pure Australian.
Nomed: You’re Salem with a fake accent, Aussie McAustralian. SO IN YOUR FACE SAAAALEM!
Aussie: That’s not…<drops accent> Alright alright, you can have co-host. Nomed: WOOOOOO! I mean, I should’ve known that mannequin wasn’t a real person, but in your FACE! Oh right, news. Anonymous, a group frequently cited for other attacks in the past including Mastercard and the Westboro Family Church (Salem: Seriously, who likes Westboro?) had taken an aggressive stance against Sony for their lawsuit against George Hotz, aka Geohot for his hacking of the PlayStation 3, though it is more widely believed Sony had really taken offense to Geohot posting the security key online, a copyrighted intellectual property of Sony, not the actual hacking of the PS3.
Salem: A few weeks prior to the outage, Anonymous had initiated SonyOp, an aggressive anti-Sony campaign which included a DDoS attack against the PlayStation Network. When they realized the impact against the customers they had taken a different, arguably failed approach: protesting at Sony stores. When George Hotz settled the lawsuit, Anonymous backed off of Sony. After the PSN outage many quickly pointed fingers to Anonymous who had distanced themselves from the outage, claiming they had nothing to do with it. In response to the file left on Sony’s server, Anonymous had reportedly been split on the issue, some more powerful members of Anonymous attacking weaker members. Interesting story, no matter how you look at it. On May 15th PlayStation Network services began restoration, starting with allowing updates to Firmware 3.61 and password reset on a country-by-country basis, North America to start. As of this recording Japan has yet to come back online due to Japan’s desire to see if Sony’s security had truly been strengthened. On May 16th Sony had given details to the “Welcome Back” program, a way to redeem themselves in the eyes of the customers. Details can be found in the AVGNFMR forum following the show’s airing. Though Sony is not quite out of the woods yet, they’re nearing there. A minor issue occurred on May 18th in which other users could change the passwords for another, but they had since resolved that.
Nomed: Is that it? I’m tired.
Salem: You talked for about 30 seconds, how can you be tired?
Nomed: I just can be. So the job is mine, right? That means I can make fun of you and whatnot?
Salem: How about the job is yours but you don’t make fun of me? Oh, right, the rules, follow these and I won’t fire you. 1, no swearing, this is a family friendly-ish show. And I am the boss, demon or not there is no murdering of me, period. Understand?
Nomed: Okay okay, I’ll only make fun of you behind your back. Can I eat Aussie McAustralian?
Salem: But he’s not a rea – you know what, sure. Let’s take a quick break. This next song comes from user Tajiyo Zugun (Tah-geh-yo-zoo-gun) who made this song himself. Though I wouldn’t normally play a song that isn’t related to video games, I couldn’t say no to such a request. My sincerest apologized if I am mispronouncing his Gaia Username. This is So Addicted by Tajiyo Zugun.
[Plays “So Addicted by Tajiyo Zugun” – Approximately 3:35] Lyrics, musics written and performed by Gaia User Tajiyo Zagun
Salem: And we’re ba –
Nomed: <making grunting sounds, whines> I CAN’T OPEN THE PEANUT BUTTER!
Salem: <laugh> Nomed, we’re back on the air. Our listeners are hearing this.
Nomed: <grunt> I DON’T CARE I WANT MY PEANUT BUTTER!! WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO <grunting, straining, pants> I can’t. Open. This.
Salem: I’ll open it for you later, come on.
Nomed: <grunt> Okay, okay I’m here. Heh…heh…so what now? Salem: Welp, we reported the PSN back up, next is Project Café. Take it away, Nomed.
Nomed: Project Café is the next console release by Nintendo. Scheduled to be released in 2012, the console will be on display in playable form at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, E3 2011 which takes place between June 7th to the 9th.
Salem: There are a ton of rumors surrounding the console but according to 01.net, who had previously broken information about Sony’s NGP, Next Generation Portable, their successor to the PSP, they claim to have solid information revolving around the console, including 512 megabytes of RAM and the new controller will allegedly feature dual analog sticks, a standard D-pad, two bumpers, two triggers and "possibly more.” IGN claims the controller will be functionally like the Gamecube controller. 01net claims the controller is "a touch tablet controller, with moderate graphic output," comparing the controller to an iPad with buttons. They also added that there is a front-facing camera on the controller. Supposedly, the controller will also feature six-axis motion controls that outperform a PlayStation Move motion controller (in terms of fidelity), as well as a built-in sensor bar. Many agree that the new controller features a 6-inch touchscreen. IGN claims that the controller will allow players to stream entire games to the controller from the console, and that the console itself "is likely to resemble a modernized version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)."
Nomed: Sweet, Nintendo is going to have the next generation system years before Sony and Microsoft. Aren’t they avoiding new consoles until at least 2015?
Salem: Supposedly. With Project Café releasing in 2012 we’ll see, though. Rumors state it will be backwards compatible with the Nintendo Wii.
Nomed: I hope the official name is PeeWii.
Salem: We grew out of Wii jokes years ago.
Nomed: Haha I didn’t!
Salem: Kotaku reports that Project Café will have 8 gigs of flash-based memory on-board, with the assumed purpose of storing game saves, and will use 25 GB game discs (a Blu-ray-like Nintendo proprietary) as a media format. For more information keep an eye on the web between E3 and make sure to check out the July 1st show which I will follow-up with news from E3.
Nomed: Wait wait wait, you’re doing E3 news next show?
Salem: I am, why?
Nomed: That is going to be a cluster[bleep].
Salem: <sigh> I agree. I just pray Sony and Microsoft stay away from new consoles. So who here is excited for Modern Warfare 3?
Nomed: Uh.
Salem: Not a fan?
Nomed: S’alright. Why?
Salem: Modern Warfare 3 has been officially announced. Be sure to check out Callofduty.com/mw3 for the latest information. It’ll be developed by Infinite Ward with collaboration from Sledgehammer Games (Nomed: They have like, no games out) and Raven Software who previously worked on X-Men Origins: Wolverine the video game and Singularity, they will be working on the multiplayer components. Both fairly decent games in their own right. But actually, Nomed, Sledgehammer Games was founded by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey of Visceral Games, who you might know from the Dead Space series.
Nomed: Oh, that’s cool.
Salem: According to rumors the game will feature large, destructible maps and, according to Kotaku, will continue the story from Modern Warfare 2.
Nomed: That’s…no duh.
Salem: Well, some speculation came about that it would follow Ghost, a fan-favorite character from 2 as a prequel. Since he, well that’s a spoiler.
Nomed: HE DIED.
Salem: Nomed! Spoilers are not okay.
Nomed: With as many people who played that game? If you don’t know that Ghost died you really are living under a townhouse.
Salem: Rock.
Nomed: Whatever! On May 16th it was revealed the game is coming out November 8th, 2011. Amazon and Gamestop are already taking preorders. Isn’t…isn’t Uncharted 3 coming out then?
Salem: No, it’s November 1st.
Nomed: I wonder how well Uncharted 3 will sell. Probably a lot. My real question is how much will Modern Warfare 3 sell?! That’s the big one. It’s time for a break, right?
Salem: Right, this song is Clamato Fever by AE & Prozax, one of my all-time favorites topping over 1500 plays in my iTunes. The only other song that can even half that is Magia, the ending theme to Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Nomed: <snorts> YOU WATCHED THAT?!
Salem: Hey, have you? Great anime and very different take on the magical girl genre, it was literally one of the best animes I’ve seen in a long time.
Nomed: Pfft, whatever, maybe watch it during the song. Clamato Fever by AE & Prozax, you can find it on OCRemix.org for free download.
[Clamato Fever by AE & Prozax – Approximately 2:30] Song available for free download from OCRemix.org
Salem: I love that song way too much. Seriously, check out OCRemix.org for some great video game remixes, all for free on their site, they also have full albums of their remixes available for free. OCRemix.org, check it out, you won’t be sorry, I get a huge amount of music from them and they are, in one word: awesome. I think that counts as an advertisement, doesn’t it?
Nomed: Sure, whatever. <grunt> PEANUT BUTTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Salem: Are you STILL having trouble with the peanut butter?
Nomed: This has HONEY in it, it’s beautiful. I may cry.
Salem: Well come back, like I said I’ll open it for you LATER.
Nomed: By the way, Madoka Magica, woooow. I can’t believe Mami really, I mean wow, that was just wow.
Salem: You watched it all?
Nomed: Yep, went to the demon realm, took me a minute Earth time. Ending made me cry. Anyway, what’s next before I shatter my tough-guy reputation?
Salem: What reputation? Haha. For fans of Namco’s Soulcalibur series, they’ll be glad to know Soulcalibur 5 is currently 10% complete, the guest character has already been chosen according to Daishi Odashima, director of the previous Soulcalibur via his twitter account. It’s schedule for release in 2012 and will be for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game will have new characters, old characters and guest characters. The staff wants to have at least as many characters as Soulcalibur 4. The game will have new battle systems and the development team has hired new employees, so there could be some differences from past Soulcalibur games.
Nomed: Why does the script spell Soul Calibur as one word?
Salem: Because that’s the official spelling of the game. The sword, Soul Calibur, is two words, the game is one. At least I believe so. According to Namco the game will be set 17 years ahead of Soulcalibur 4 and focus on Sophitia’s son, Patroclus. Hopefully more information will be coming from E3.
Nomed: HOME OF THE NERDS!
Salem: Hey, I am one of those nerds.
Nomed: Thanks for proving my point. NERRRRRD! Ahem, sorry. So should we get into June game releases or Portal 2’s review?
Salem: I dunno, how much time do we have?
Nomed: Uh, we’re about 18 minutes in, give or take.
Salem: Hm, alright. A quick review of the most anticipated games releasing in June, and we’ll try a minute review of Portal 2. Fun, right?
Nomed: No.
Salem: You mean yes. First up is Alice: Madness Returns for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releasing June 14th in North America, and June 16th for Europe. Downloadable ports of the original game (American McGee’s Alice) for PS3 and Xbox 360 are in development to coincide with the sequel's release as a free download with brand new copies of Madness Returns. Those who do not have the code can purchase the game through Madness Returns' main menu for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live or $9.99 on PlayStation Network. The Alice: Madness Returns game disc will be required in order to access American McGee's Alice. So, those who always wanted to get into Alice can do so by picking up the game and getting both.
Nomed: Why did you report on this game? I didn’t know it was an anticipated release.
Salem: I did it for fellow broadcaster Ms Panda May, who mentioned she was excited for it on AVGNFMR’s forum, which anyone can comment on. Nomed: Suck-up. Green Lan – no, just no. Shouldn’t be on here, but it is, I am disappointed, Salem. infamous 2 is coming out for the PS3 for North America on June 7, 2011. PAL Region is June 8th, and June 10th for UK and Germany. Operation Flashpoint: Red River, the sequel to the original Dragon Rising will be out June 7th for North America, but released back in April for Europe.
Salem: Red Faction: Armageddon will be out for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 7th for North America, June 10th for Europe, Australia and the UK. Child of Eden, created by Tetsuya Mizuguchi known for PS2 game Rez, will be releasing June 14 for Xbox 360 and sometime September for PS3. The game is supposedly a spiritual successor to Rez. Shame it won’t be here until September for PS3 owners like myself.
Nomed: Would you like a straw?
Salem: A straw, why?
Nomed: So you can suck it up! Duke Nukem Forever will maybe finally be released June 14, 2011 for North America and June 11 Internationally on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Assuming it’s not delayed after 13 friggin’ years.
Salem: I can imagine the horror of the July 1st show if it gets delayed after we record this. I’m going to wear flame-proof boxers.
Nomed: I’ll be sick that day. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will be releasing June 16 for Japan, June 17 for Europe, and June 19 for North America on the Nintendo 3DS. F.E.A.R. 3 will be releasing for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 21st North America, June 24th in the UK. Dungeon Siege III will be out for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 June 17 for Europe, June 21 for North America, July 28 for Japan. Shadows of the Damned for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by Suda 51 of No More Heroes and Killer 7 fame and Shinji Mikami of Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil 4 and Vanquish fame releases June 21st on the same day Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD comes out for PS3.
Salem: And finally, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for the 3DS and Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 both release June 28th. All dates subject to change. With that, what’re we looking at, Nomed?
Nomed: Um, about 21 minutes 30 seconds.
Salem: Great, I can do a quick review of Portal 2 and finish off with our Question of the Show. Ahem. Portal 2 by Valve Corporation for PC, Xbox 360 and reviewed on the PS3. For those who played the original Portal the game is similar to the original but much longer, better graphics and top-notch voice acting, filled with laugh a minute dialogue and emotion I didn’t think Portal 1 could top. Personally, the story is even better since it delves into the origin of GLaDOS and just when you think you beat the game you’ve only scratched the surface. You return to the shoes, or shall I say Long Fall Boots of Chell, protagonist to the antagonist GLaDOS. GLaDOS is as awesome as ever, Ellen McLain makes her one of the best villains of all time and Stephen Merchant as Wheatley brings new life to the characters. The two main speaking characters make the game more solid than ever, and later in the game Cave Johnson pops up voiced by J.K. Simmons, which has some definite chuckle-worthy moments, but I think GLaDOS and Wheatley take the cake. (Nomed: Unfunny pun is unfunny.) Without spoiling anything Portal 2 is a serious contender for Game of the Year due in part to the great new gameplay mechanics and the challenging but not impossible difficulty curve. After being lost in one puzzle for 15 minutes I couldn’t help but laugh when the solution was way too obvious. In short, it’s a pretty fantastic game that leaves you wanting more and never feels too hard or makes you want to throw the controller. If you’re a fan of puzzles or just enjoy a good story, I think Portal 2 will satisfy. Your final verdict, Nomed?
Nomed: Buy it!
Salem: Agreed, definitely a must own title of 2011. With that being said, let’s move to the Question of the Show, a once-a-show question where I invite listeners to post in my forum located at tinyurl.com/Gaia-AVGNFMR (tinyurl dot com slash Gaia dash AVGNFMR or in the Gaia Radio Guild under “Gaia Radio” and “Salem’s AVGNFMR” if the tinyurl doesn’t work. This question of the show is: “Are we moving too fast from previous console releases into a new generation?” Xbox 360 marked the seventh generation of video games releasing in 2005, followed by the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 a year later, which makes Nintendo’s Wii barely 6 years old by the time Project Café is slated for release. Rumors state neither Microsoft or Sony will be releasing their next home console until 2015, though that could always change. So what do you think? How bad are your wallets hurting hearing about the eighth generation cropping up, or do you even think Project Café is a true successor to the Wii? It’s all on you now. Sound off in the forums, talk about the show, what you liked about AVGNFMR or what you’d like to see changed. I welcome opinions as long as they’re well-thought out and not trolling or flame-bait. Be respectful. With that, I leave you with the Zero Punctuation ending theme to end the show composed by Ian Dorsch which you can download free from escapistmagazine.com or willowtreeaudio.com a site in which Ian Dorsch himself is the owner of. Before I call it a show I would like this opportunity to give my condolences to the Savage family for the passing of beloved wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage. I may not have been a huge fan of wrestling, but his voice acting, TV and movie appearances were enough to definitely make me a fan of his. Rest in Peace, Macho Man Randy Savage. Nomed?
Nomed: Farewell Macho Man.
Salem: This is Salem Wolf and Nomed for AVGNFMR for Gaia Radio, signing off!
Nomed: PEANUT BUTTERRRRRR!!!!
