Currently, the nations are not are at war. But that doesn’t mean that the nations are at peace. Tensions seem to rise higher and higher between the fire nation and the others as the years go by, especially sense when bending became a dead custom. But there are some of us who are still learning the ways of our ancestors. Some of us are taking action to learn what connects us all: Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. The four elements. The things that make the world whole and connect and work together.
“Ayu, you need to be home by sundown, you hear me! No more coming home in the middle of the night, or I’ll beat your butt, and you can count on it!” my mother shouts at me as I run down the path towards the fields. “And you better not miss school, or I’ll…….”
“Or I’ll beat your butt, and you can count on it,” I finished for her. “I know the rules, mom. You don’t have to tell me them over and over again.” As I turn around to wave goodbye, her usually hard expression becomes soft. She doesn’t say what’s on her mind, but I already know what she wants to say. Please don’t fire bend while you’re out. You’ll hurt yourself again. Instead of watching her face, I turn back around and start to run even faster; I can’t stand that face, because I already know that I won’t be able to stop fire bending for anyone. It’s what keeps me from insanity.
As my feet slap against the hard dusty ground a familiar face waits in the distance. Unfortunately, it’s not very friendly.
“Hey, Ayu. Still walking alone to school, I see. When are you ever going to get a boyfriend, if you’re capable of getting one?” Ken spits in my face.
I heave a heavy sigh. “I don’t have time for things like that. There are more important things out there than short-term love.” With this statement I hope he goes away, bored of tormenting me. No such luck.
“You’re just so busy being ugly, I suppose. And doing absolutely nothing with your life,” he says this as he runs past me. At this point I’m done playing nice and I trip him. He falls, I step on his face, and go on my way. This is my typical run to school. So you could probably relate to my surprise when the teacher called me to the side when she told everyone else to read chapter five in our history books.
“Ayu, I have just gotten a letter from the royal court, and it says that the Fire Lord would like to see you,” she says her glasses gleaming in the sunlight.
“You can’t be serious. “ There was no denying the perplexed look on my face as she showed the letter that requested my presence at the palace, personally signed by the Fire Lord. In the next hour, I was standing before the massive door that led to the throne room. The doors opened, releasing a eminent amount of searing heat. I kept my head down and started to walk down the aisle that led to the throne. In coming of ten feet of it, I fell to my knees and put my head down low. I felt the fire in front of me blaze wildly.
“Are you Ayu Sasaki, daughter of Kyoto Sasaki?” the man asked in a voice that was deep and rumbled low like an earthquake.
“Y-yes, Fire Lord. You wished to see me?” I squeaked out. He’s much scarier than they make him out to be.
“I have chosen you for a special assignment. I expect you to accept this assignment with great gratitude and not fail to complete it.”
“Of course, Fire Lord. Any assignment you give me I will complete. It’s part of being to loyal to my country.”
“Then I expect that you will be able to go out and find out where the avatar is, and train him in the ways of fire bending. You have until the end of summer.” And with that I’m escorted out of the room and left with this mission. Now where am I ? Oh, just traveling my out of the city, and headed to the Northern Water Tribe, where the next avatar is supposed to be born.
