freefall - if he was scared of anything at all, it was the diving board -- that thing had it out for him and so did the other kids at the pool, egging him on until he stepped forward until he was over water with nothing to catch his fall to certain doom but a thin piece of plastic. He might have had time to panic, too, if Satu hadn't taken matters into her own hands and pushed him off herself.
space - it's too big, they decide, the night sky above them (from where the sit atop the tallest hill within walking distance) is just too vast and since they are eternal, can't they do something about it? but no, no, it is a lesson maybe hard learned, but to fill the space all they can do is open their arms up to embrace it.
life - When Immaculamb is born, even though his view of it is partial at best, Moses cannot stop staring (at least not until he faints dead away and isn't discovered until well into the next day).
peace - She is always wondering for her namesake, why it's just so damn hard for her elder nations to accept it, but maybe they have never felt this -- have never lay in a hammock with a long-fingered boy who whispers nothing to the sky, has a running joke with the clouds and laughs at nothing more than her blush; maybe it's because they have never felt this safe, this warm, this loved, this raw.
yellow - the day she finally realizes the day she has grown into her intended body, is the day she sports a bikini and hums the song to go with it.
music - he never fails to weave these songs of magic for her and this time is no different -- she sees sleepless nights in alleyways that smell of warm laundry and spicy sausage, the moonlight waning down to illuminate the dancing nomads with their long skirts and bangles, sitting riverside and downing cheap coffee spiked with vodka in the company of an Olga and a Natasha -- and a flower blooms within her.
sweater - she bundles up in her fine lengths of cashmere and heavy wool in all different colors when the cold first comes, so used to it that it's a routine she barely bats an eye at; she laughs at how funny he looks in his brand-new sweater, shivering as if it were twenty more degrees below zero.
leave - it's never an easy thing, leaving the beaches and the surf and the sand behind, but most of all it's him she misses, and even though when she is home she is whole, she can't help but start feeling that maybe a new cavity is growing in her heart, that fills when she feels the sun on her bare back once again.
lick - ice cream is truly a godsend now, in the punishing heat of August (somewhere his brother is swimming in the blue blue ocean with a silky-skinned Greek), the sticky cold sweetness just begging him to put it in his mouth, and -- that is when she snatches the spoon from his hands and takes a big bite for herself.
happy - it's Christmas and the house is full, full of teenagers and adults (lust driven with their significant others, it's a blessing that the walls are thick and the rooms spaced well) and lights, paper braids strung from room to room and snowflakes stuck on the windows, lights at every opportunity -- Romano is feeding seventeen people three times a day, cleaning and doing his old mother duties, but there is laughter at dinner and a fire to sit around in the evening -- the only time he can remember being this happy would be when his children's feet were still tiny enough to fit in the palm of his hand.
fearless - if she can squish a spider for him (with her shoe without a second thought), then she can do anything.
