School Year Round? Year long school? My cousins Tony and Stephanie teach at a school year long. They go 6 weeks, have off 2 weeks, go 6 weeks, have off 2 weeks, and so on. It’s not really that bad, I still wouldn’t want to go to school the whole year. “Why?” you ask? The answer is simple, and I’ll give you 3 simple reasons why. First off, students need a summer break. Not just for the teachers to have off, not just not to be in school for 3 months, but for a more important reason. If students work too much too long, then everything they learn will become jumbled up into one big mess of stuff in their brain and it would actually be worse that way. Since they would not be able to quickly pull out of their brain the information they need, teachers would have to re-teach the subject which could take up a lot of valuable extra time, which there rarely is anyway. Students need the 3 months off to sort out their brain as it prepares to learn new stuff. If the items the student is trying to learn gets all jumbled and mixed up inside his or her brain, then the student could get headaches thinking about something simple, like 2+2, because the brain is not sorted out. Every student having this problem, times the 500 or more students the school has, each going to the nurse for a headache, this would cause problems for the poor nurse. She would have way too many patients and her own head would start to get a headache. Another idea why we should not have school all year round is that teachers just can’t handle the stress of having students all year! Having them 180 days a year is tough enough! Students bug teachers every single day with questions needing answers, teachers always have to deal with the constant whining of that one student who always seems to hurt herself, or hear the tattle-tale of the class tell on so and so. S/he has to deal with the class clown interrupting his/her class to say some rude remark that will start the whole class laughing, getting them to waste time so learning is made difficult. Having to deal with people is tough, but grading paper after paper of the same work can be so exhausting and coming up with the plans is tiring enough. Teachers need those 3 months off. Finally, the last reason we shouldn’t have school all year is that when school is out, parents don’t have to worry about their kid missing class and teachers don’t have to worry about missing work to go on vacation. Families get together and have good, fun parties together while they can over the 3 months, knowing they don’t have to worry about work or school until it starts again at the end of the break. Taking all that happiness from everyone away by taking away the 3 months of summer vacation is just cruel. Parents, kids, and teachers all enjoy their vacation and would love to have it stay as long as it can, if not forever. Don’t try to have school year round. No one will like it and they’ll all be mad at you. Is that what you really want?
