So once upon a time, there was a girl named Charlie. And in the same time, there was a girl named Emily.
And they were the bane of each other's existences. They were born polar opposites. One cast her hate upon everyone, while the other one refused to hate. One lived in darkness and melancholy while the other was like an intense ray of sunshine. One thrived off of the pain and suffering of those she felt were beneath her; the other tried to uplift and lead. One had a voice that sounded like feet dragging on pavement, a low drawl that seemed to chill, but the other never stopped giggling, as if giggling were part of her language too.
And they both suffered.
Charlie was the embodiment of positivity. She smiled even when there was no reason to smile, and promised herself a long time ago that she would never hate a person. As a result, she threw out chances because she felt that it took time for a person to show their true character. But because of all the chances she gave, the idea she gave people was that they could do anything and they would be forgiven. She kept something to herself, though. Underneath the glowing exterior, there was a dark, fiery interior. Her patience was as thin as fishing line, and she had a raging temper. Yet somehow, she managed to tuck it away into a small corner and put a smile on.
Emily skulked in the shadows. Correction: Emily was the shadows. She lured people with her mystery, showered them with love and compassion, then stabbed them in the back and threw them away as if they were nothing more than the ground beneath her feet. Em just wanted love. The poor girl didn't know how to get it. She tried. She made friends with the foulest of the foul, and slowly became more twisted than she had been before, all for the acceptance that their so-called friendship could give her. She wanted to be close to someone, but when she did manage to, she pushed them away and withdrew into herself, snapping when they came too close.
The two girls shared a strange kind of relationship. On the outside, it looked like a friendship, but in the heart of it, there was turmoil. Em had a boyfriend named Neil, and he was the only person who had managed to become that close to her heart. Em was extremely guarded about their relationship -- anyone who threatened it automatically became an enemy. However, Neil and Charlie were very close friends, so close that Em started to become suspicious, and that suspicion was spawned by jealousy. It seemed like Neil confided more in Charlie than he did in Emily, and as a result, Emily started loathing Charlie inwardly.
The first sign that Charlie got that there was a problem with Em was during one night when Charlie was feeling a little sad. The pressure of work and family was starting to take a toll on her and she felt like there was no one to help her. So, she told Em about it, and the gears started to turn in Em's mind. Em twisted Charlie's words, then relayed the words to Neil, telling him that Charlie felt like everyone hated her. All the while, Charlie begged Em not to tell anyone, because she didn't want her friends to see her bent out of shape.
As Charlie talked to her, Em fed her friends lies, especially Neil, in the hopes that it would end his friendship with Charlie, then gathered all of them and attacked Charlie, calling her all the names in the book and spewing filth in all directions. Charlie was calm, and sat through the tirade with a smile on her face, all the while chanting to herself, I will not hate her. I will not hate her.
In all honesty, Charlie wanted Em to rot.
The tormented 'friendship' between the two girls dragged on for a long time. Em used Charlie as an emotional dartboard, throwing daggers of hate and jealousy. And yet, none of them seemed to hit the bull's eye. Charlie remained unfazed, and this only angered Em more. Every single time Em attempted to damage Charlie, the endeavour failed, and Charlie would smile and say, "You can try all you want, but I will never hate you."
At least, outwardly.
Then came a point in time where their little world was flipped onto its back.
Neil started to crack. Emily threw her words at Neil carelessly throughout their relationship, and although it hurt him, he kept quiet for the longest time, until it came to a point where he knew something drastic would happen unless he did something. Charlie did her best to stay close to him in those uncertain times, and supported him as much as he could.
In the end, Neil left Emily.
Emily's world came crashing down in a way it never had before. She lashed out and became an inferno of loathing, blaming the downfall on anyone and everyone.
And eventually, she pointed her finger at Charlie.
Em had been searching for a way to blame the mess on Charlie, and finally, she found one. One of her friends had put it into Em's mind that Neil and Charlie were closer than she had thought, and that Neil had left Em to be with her. Em was in a rage, and confronted Charlie about it. "So, I heard that you and Neil were a thing when I was dating him," Em spat out, and Charlie was taken aback. "Who that you that?" she said, more than a little confused. "No one. I just wanted to know if it was true," said Em, growing irritated, and Charlie eyed her strangely. "You're a piece of work, eh? You know that I would never do that to you. Despite what you think, I am a loyal friend, and I wouldn't go behind your back and do something as horrible as that," and although Em knew fully well that Charlie hadn't done it, she told herself that she had because of that loathing she had for the girl.
And this loathing swelled as Charlie remained friends with Neil. Fueled by jealousy, Em attacked Charlie with a vigour she hadn't had before, but to no avail. "I forgive you. And I still don't hate you," Charlie would say gently, and Em would simmer in her built up hate.
Then, Emily found out about Charlie's ex-boyfriend, Hadrian, and decided that she liked him.
Hadrian and Charlie were still very close friends, even after the implications of their past relationship, and when Em told Charlie about her newfound love, Charlie couldn't help but feel a little adverse towards it. Although Charlie's past love for Hadrian wasn't there, she still felt connected to him, and when Em, of all people, wanted Hadrian for herself, Charlie was a little reluctant. Charlie always aimed to be selfless, though, and she didn't stop Emily. Instead, she told Emily about all of Hadrian's great qualities. Then, she told Hadrian about his new admirer.
An hour later, Emily and Hadrian were a couple.
The first question Emily asked Charlie about it was, "Are you jealous?" and suddenly, it all became clear to her. Not only did Em like Hadrian, she wanted Charlie to be upset so that she might have a small victory over the girl.
But Charlie was intelligent. Not only did she know of Emily's goal, she also knew about her deep-set hate.
She also knew that Hadrian must have had some reason to say yes to Emily, and so, she said, "Nope, I'm just glad that you and Hadrian are happy. I do want to warn you about one thing, though,", she said, a slight twinge in her voice, "Hadrian is no pushover. If you mistreat him, he'll make sure that you know," and with that, she left.
Two days later, Charlie left this little world and immersed herself in her own, severing all ties she had to people within it.
And for two months, she was in peace. She forgot about what she had left behind.
And the past, as it always does, came back to haunt her.
Emily found Charlie.
