As kids, their favorite game was tag.
Caleen Fox and Allen Parkerson were known as the fastest kids on the block. There was no where they couldn't get to without not getting caught, or being unable to outrun it. Quick, and clever, the two often saw each other a fierce rival.
Not only was the game of tag fun for the speedy devils, but it easy to touch the one you could never touch without a reason. Caleen often took this chance to get closer to Allen.
Her Allen.
But they were only kids, and kids have the tendency to DREAM, and to WISH. They also tend to not NOTICE the WORLD around THEM.
"HA! Got you!"
"No way!"
"Hey!"
"You can't catch me!"
"I can too! Get back here!"
"Oops! Missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me!"
"E...!!! CALEEN!"
"Huh-?"
And hers would NEVER be the same.
Years later, she's back. But what does Allen have to say for himself now?
"What do you want, you wheel-bound freak?"
-
Caleen was once a runner. And she loved it.
But when a childhood accident leaves her paralyzed from the waist down, Caleen was in and out of the hospital constantly for surgery. She was forced to be home-schooled, and she lost contact with all her friends... one in particular.
Allen. Her best friend, her first love.
But she was finally released from the hospital and what she called, "house-arrest," and Caleen suddenly decided to go to school again. She hadn't been to school in six years, but she knew that wouldn't stop her from getting back to her lost bonds and him.
In a wheelchair, Caleen's first day of school was filled with many emotions: embarrassment, shyness, longing, and most of all, happiness. Turns out many things hadn't changed in her familiar peers and school-life, while some... did.
As Caleen struggled to understand school, and her embarrassment of her own set backs, her heart fought to grasp the fact that Allen -sweet, kind, a little stupid, but understanding Allen- had turned into a complete a*****e. Not only did he ignore her, he full out insulted her in front of the entire class!
Hurt and humiliated, Caleen is ALMOST reluctant to visit the track, the place she used to dream of running on. The key word being ALMOST. There, like he was running in the Olympics alone, was Allen. Running.
After almost being caught, Caleen quickly hides herself behind the bleachers like she had something to hide. But Allen suddenly took advantage that someone was listening, and blurted just about everything out: who he was, why he was there, all of his dreams and ambitions, and he began telling stories about two kids whose favorite game was tag...
About a girl who he used to love.
And everyday, intriguised by his stories, she would wait, and he was run and rest only to speak to her. And though she never said a word, he always knew she was there.
As time progresses, and the twosome share a secret bond with one another, Allen begins to change. With a new hop in his step, a gleaming light in his eyes, Caleen must make a life-changing choice now that she was satisfied with her life:
Take a surgery that could mean her running career back, or very well kill her chances forever. To be with Allen, or to continue being his sercret friend?
-
"...you know, I've told you everything about me, but I don't know anything about you. Hell, I don't even know your name, or if you go to my school!"
"..." Caleen tapped the rotten wood quietly.
"Miss?"
Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. Gathering her courage, Caleen began to sing in a childish tone, "Missed me, missed me..."
She could feel his questioning face, then the stiffness of his posture. She knew his eyes were beginning to grow wide with shock, and a bit of horror. Her hand grabbed onto one of the bars of the benches, and pulled herself up with shakey arms enough to be heard if when she whispered, "...now you gotta-"
"...Caleen."
"-kiss me."
He wasted no time in doing so through the gaps.
