A small woman lay in a dark room. Chains held her arms up over her head. The metal also kept her ankles enclosed. Her straight, dark blue hair flowed down around her, appearing to be as long as she was, if not longer. A crack of light opened, shining on her face. The woman flinched and turned her head from the opening door. Her hair fell across her face, hiding it from the man who entered. "Ms. Orchard?" Berry chuckled sadly. "You say that as if you respect me." "I'll respect you much more if you cooperate." "That's crap and you know it." The man laughed. "Well, true, I still won't respect you. Or release you. Or let any of your followers find you." "They're not followers," Berry snapped weakly. "You can't honestly keep calling them your 'children'." "And why not?" "Because you are not their mother." "I'm all they have, besides each other." The man shook his head. "You think you understand them?" "I'm the only one who does." She still didn't face him. The man knelt beside Berry and cupped her chin in his hand, turning her head to him. Berry tried to pull away from him, but he was too close for her to move back. "Ms. Orchard... we just need to know who it is." "I'll never tell you," she spat. "That child might not have been born like the others, but she's human now. She has a life." "You won't unless you tell me which girl it is." Berry tilted her head down and bit the man's hand, hard. He let out a shout and jumped away. She turned her head away. Her hair went back over her face. The man shook his head again and turned to leave. When he opened the door, he looked at her over his shoulder. "We'll discuss this tomorrow. I will find out which girl is the carrier." He left, slamming the door behind him. Only then did Berry cry.
