"It was the end of the beginning, and the beginning of the road to the beginning of the end. It's the middle, in other words."
The next day was a lot more awkward than the first.
Ashley realized just how many classes she had with her team mates: Rafael was in two, Michelle in three, and Kylee was in study hall, but that barely counted as a class. She was worried since the only time of day they could naturally congregate was at the end of the day.
She yawned sleepily, walking pass several talking boys in her daze. She had gotten up really early, since she had to do some homework before class started. The creamy coffee skinned girl hadn't gotten much sleep last night either; the dreams of empty yellow eyes kept haunting her awake. She had a circular indent in her palm to show off for her intense worry.
As Ashley walked into the school, twiddling with her orb in her pocket, Trish came up to her: their usually routine.
"Hey Ashley. What's up?" Ashley immediately stopped playing with her orb. Couldn't risk Trish finding out, especially with things like that Level 4 out and about. Ashley shook off the thought in horror.
"Nothing much, just tired."
Trish laughed, her infamous smile forming. "You look horrible, Ash. What the hell happened last night? Get attacked by a giant bug?"
You're close. It was giant fish, and it wasn't me being attacked. Ashley pushed aside the thought. "Ah, shut up! I just had a hard time going to sleep, that's all."
"Liar," Trish huffed, crossing her arms. "And what the hell are you playing with in your pocket? And what happened yesterday! You didn't come to the usual spot."
Trish was talking about the area she and her always went to at their shared nutrition period; behind the boy's bathroom, in between the giant bushes that looked like a witch's nose (Ashley giggled to herself: Trish always called the bush the, "b***h Bush." wink along with anyone else who wanted to come. But it was usually just the two of them, since most people were scared of Trish. Ashley never understood why.
Ashley's mind raced a bit. She had to lie, and fast.
"Um... do you really want to know?"
"Well, duh!" Trish gave her a skeptical look.
The thought of Ryan passed through her mind. Of course! He was her initial excuse, why not use him?
"I was talking to Ryan," Ashley said quietly, smiling girlishly to add to the effect. Trish's mouth opened, and she gaped with a grin.
"No way."
"Yes way."
"Shut UP!" Trish dragged her from the gate of the school to the steps nearby. "And you didn't tell me? I wanna know EVERYTHING."
Ashley giggled. "Well, we were in first period, and..." As she explained, the two girls laughed and giggled, but Ashley meant it this time.
"You whore," Trish slapped her shoulder. "How could you DUMP your crush of two years like that. I should b***h slap you right now."
"Well, excuse me! I had a leak... and besides, what could Ryan, Ryan Tylers, want with a plain girl like me? I should probably b***h slap you for thinking such horrid thoughts!" Ashley turned away dramatically, placing her hands on her chest to emphasize her point.
"Leak, schmeak! RYAN WANTS YOU. GIVE IN TO TEMPTATION, GIRL." Trish shook her shoulders with enthusiasm.
Ashley rolled her eyes. "Whatever." The girl dug into her tote to pull out her binder, leaving the forgotten gold scroll in her bag.
Trish didn't fail to notice it.
"Hey, Ashley-"
Rinngg. Ashley groaned. She had come early for nothing!
As Ashley stood, Trish grabbed her bag. "Ashley, you better meet me at recess. I will kill you if you don't come, you hear?" She pointed at Ashley.
Ashley grinned. "Maybe." And she dashed off.
As Ashley sat down in her first period, her first sight was Ryan. And despite the gossiping, and laughs from earlier, her heart sank. He was staring out into space, glaring at something unseen.
The bell hadn't rung, so Ashley stood on impulse. Walking over to the boy, she gulped. "R-Ryan?"
Said boy looked up, and smiled. Ashley noticed the lack of life in his tone. "Hey Ashley. What's up?"
"Ryan, look, I'm sorry I ran off yesterday," Ashley said, "Can I talk to you at snack?"
Ryan's glasses-clad face brightened. "Really? Okay."
At the sight of his approval, Ashley felt like a weight had been lifted off her body. "Okay, I'll talk to you later."
"Later."
Giving him one last smile, Ashley walked back to her desk. She sat, and moved her head to the side slightly. Her glowing smile was lost to all, except for one.
Rafael smirked to himself. He remembered that glazed look in Ashley's eyes, the tilt of her head, and that smile. She was happy. He hit himself in the head with his pencil -he still remembered those little habits of hers, and they broke up years ago.
He looked at her again, then turned back. He leaned on his palm, and thought, I guess it wouldn't hurt to reminscese.
The teacher didn't once call on him.
