To Accept:
To receive willingly. to be able or designed to take or hold. to give admittance or approval to. to endure without protest or reaction. to regard as proper, normal, or inevitable. to recognize as true. How can one little word mean so much to every gasping teenager, to every bible-thumper trying to save a hopeless soul? To a mother and a father trying to make their children something they are not.
To accept and be accepted is not needed in ones life, but wanted so earnestly, that it eats the soul whole, leaving nothing but the perfect shell to be loved by all. It holds so many clasped into its death-grip gasping for air, or running in circles trying to catch their out-of-reach tail. It sends humans into a world worse than the seventh pain of hell. Skeletons of once beautiful and strong children whom laughed and spoke of innocent dreams, whether they were listened to or not.
This word and its many meanings are what the American dream is about. The perfect community where everyone goes to church every Sunday, or bring their children to every soccer game, and listen to every choir their children's voice could be heard. Never will this be if there is something someone doesn't know.
Knowledge is power, but ignorance is the devil himself wrapped tightly around the hear, squeezing it completely of affection or human feeling. Acceptance is only what the majority knows and lives by. the minority is lost in a world of fear and judgment. Their is a problem with acceptance. their is no room to expand and grow; to learn of the different dreams that lay under the skin of the different personalities. There is no room to learn of new cultures but those that have been branded as normal and acceptable.
What of those that aren't acceptable? The rejects of America or the small communities of America; the minorities in religion, culture, hobbies, sex or even weight, . The gays are unacceptable because the majority does not want to open their closed mind and let the new in. What about the Atheists whom believe science before religion. They cannot be accepted by the majority because so few understand how a life could be without their god. Those who call themselves Gothic cannot be accepted because they do not LOOK acceptable. They are judged by their black clothing, Black as night, black as darkness, dark like the depths of the soul where demons fight to control all which a person is. dark like the fears which bury themselves underneath the skin of the living. The fat girl is unacceptable for the fact that she let herself get to a size that the normal would not. All are not accepted because the normal say so, but what is normal other than what the majority thinks? What is true acceptance if it differs between place to place.
Acceptance. I do not understand the need to be accepted, yet even i fall to the plague of trying to be accepted. Listening to music that is okay to my mind, but not great, wearing clothes that is acceptable than the clothes i want. I have accepted the roll of the shell, changing, shifting as what is or isn't accepted changes with the seasons. I have accepted a fate worse than death, only to still not be acceptable.
This is why i have decided, if there is something i need to change it isn't my weight or what i like. I will accept the flaws of me, big or small and listen to what i want to listen, wear what i want to wear and be who i truly am. I no longer will be a shell of a person, but a true human being with my own set of likes and dislikes, my own hobbies, dreams, appearance, and taste. I will not be acceptable, but when the comment is made that i am not, i will ask: What does the word accept truly mean but to accept yourself?
