of skylarks and sparrows- a pirates of the caribbean fanfic

*chapter* 3

So consumed she was in reaching freedom from her rather unpleasant situation, she was taken quite by surprise (which quickly turned into equal annoyance) when her quest for open air was halted by some inconsiderate oaf. When she had flung open the door, which she surely thought led to her freedom, she hadn’t paused and, in result, had ungracefully collided into, not the welcoming clean air and warm sunshine that she had anticipated, but something quite solid. Something that she quickly identified to be a man’s chest.
She started to turn to the left of her new unexpected obstacle, thinking of dodging out of his reach, but stopped when dark chocolate eyes met hers. She was immediately fixed to the spot. Paralyzed. Even if she could somehow manage to muster up enough will power to pull her eyes from the certain unending depths of this man’s gaze she wasn’t sure she wanted to and that was quite perplexing in itself. Before any of these foreign feelings could leek out through her own tell-tale eyes she quickly covered them over with a layer of indifference and stubbornness. This man, whoever he was, was in her way. Her way to freedom from her own personal purgatory. And she would get there, even with this man’s interference.
His eyes were very drawing. Outlined with dark coal, to resist the harsh Caribbean glare, they accented his almost black eyes in a perfect way no matter how hard she tried to resist noticing. An unidentified emotion briefly flickered across them but then, almost just as quickly, it was tucked away and a touch of humor took its place. Right away offense was taken. If this...man thought that just because she was a girl she would leap into his arms, swoon, and beg him to save her from these awful pirates then he was in for a surprise. She challenged him wordlessly. He smirked in return.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” He questioned, this time with unmasked humor. He was obviously enjoying himself immensely. Indignant, and with the spell broken, she raised her fist to strike him, but he was too fast and caught her clenched hand in mid-air. “Now that isn’t very nice. I don’t believe I deserve that, luv.” And without another word he caught her up in his arms and swung her over his shoulder like a sack of recently acquired loot. After readjusting his hold on her, making sure that she was fixed firmly in his arms, he started in a path to the midnight colored ship.
She was stunned into disbelieving silence at first, still not quite coming to terms with the fact that he had dared to touch her, but was jolted out of her trance when a pair of clashing pirates, locked together in battle, cut across their path and immediately started to pound on his back.
“I DEMAND you put me down this INSTANT!”
He laughed at her and tighten his hold provocatively. “Now why would I do that luv when we were just starting to get to know one another?”
Her face twisted in revulsion, pausing momentarily in her attack with her fists...but then quickly resuming when his words fully sunk in. “If you DARE to lay ONE HAND on me I will have you PURSUED by the ENTIRE royal navy and I will PERSONALLY be the one to PULL the lever to END your PATHETIC EXISTENCE!” she finished off with a string of rather impressive profanities.
“Well you’re just a barrel of fun now aren’t you?” he laughed again. Her piercing voice had, temporarily, distracted the battling crews.
They looked at the strange picture; a wildly grinning pirate hauling a swearing, scowling lady who seemed like her goal in life was to beat his back bloody but was barely even bestowing him with a scratch. The ice that had seemed to have frozen them was thawed when one sailor suddenly blinked himself back into reality and took advantage of his still motionless opponent; stabbing him clean through the chest. At once everything was action again and the peculiar couple was forgotten. Forgotten that is for all but the ones who had gone through the trouble to acquire their gem.
Strangely, the man seemed to have no problem navigating a path through the chaos, even with a number of the offending pirates breaking free of their opponents to charge at him, trying to reclaim their source of leverage. He would merely side-step or trip them into falling into another’s blade or over the edge of the ship. She had to admit that she was a bit impressed.
The solid hull of seemingly endless black met them almost too soon (for it seemed that the mystery ship was quite a lot bigger than her current captives’) and our duchess found herself being hauled now directly towards a flimsy rope ladder that was carelessly tossed over from the other ship to create a sort of vertical bridge between the two. He couldn’t possibly expect her to climb that, could he?
“Well luv, shall you be boarding yourself or would you rather be carried?” He asked as he carefully set her down in front of him; still keeping a steady arm around her waist to insure that she wouldn’t get any fool hardy ideas into her head about attempting to jump off the ship or some other crazed scheme for a means of escape.
Giving him a look of pure loathing, which was only rewarded with another wild grin that she was really starting hate, she turned toward the flimsy ladder. Her only mistake in her unwavering decision to show him up for thinking that she was incompetent in climbing a simple rope ladder was her mistake in looking down into the slight space of constantly moving blue between the two ships.
Spots blocked her vision and she found that for the first time she was having trouble standing straight with the swaying motion of the ship. All she could think of was what it would feel like to fall into that claustrophobic crevice, hitting the ship on both sides until water consumed her, and then being trapped trying both to keep her head above water and not be smashed between the two as they bumped and rocked to the movement of the ocean.
It’s funny how the mind and body reacts in a time of freezing terror. Every sane thought was emptied from her head leaving behind only that same irrational and unreasoning image that just kept repeating over and over in her mind; leaving no space except for that sickening sense of free falling.
The plunge into darkness was sudden as her legs gave way and she dropped to the deck.
