The Tales of Zegwar
I can go anywhere I want to do just by imagining it, if you'd like to join me all you have to do is believe. So read what I write, even those few that aren't about my make-believe world of Zegwar. I promise, fun awaits those who dare enter my mind...
The Truth - Part Three
I know that I told you that the first magical that I ever met was my older brother Richie but technically it was a rogue demon hunter that I met four years before I ever met Richie. I don’t talk about him much because I never knew anything about him. To me he was nothing more than a fade memory. I only met him once but he certainly made an impression on me. In fact I remember everything that he said to me the day I met him. For the longest time he was my entire image of the magical world. Maybe that’s why it took my so long to seek out other magicals.
Oh right back to what I was saying. Not long after I fled from the library I was attacked yet again. Already it had become like a routine - I go out, I get attacked, I use my power, the demon dies. This time it was another vampire. Despite what I had read and that I had learned that they were nothing more than soulless creatures whose only desire was to drain all the blood from my body. But he still looked so human to me and I couldn’t bring myself to kill another one. I wasn’t even able to fight back. I tried to run but the vampire was faster.
He almost killed me and he would have had I not been rescued by a mysterious man in black. This was the first magical that I ever met. After he killed the vampire that attacked me he turned to leave. He was going to leave me there. Most magicals, as you well know, would have also left as we all hating dealing with the mortals that we are sworn to protect and prefer to leave them to think what they want after they have been attacked as if you leave them alone long enough they all convince themselves that it wasn’t real. But I started crying. It was the tears that got him to stop, they would get any attention from a magical except that I was me. That meant it was the fact that the entire block started shaking that got him to give me a second look. It was a not-so-subtle sign that I had magical powers too.
After he got me to stop crying he took me away from where I’d been attacked. I was reluctant to go with him despite the fact that he’d saved my life. Like I said I was a paranoid little four year old. But I did go with him, it saved my life a thousand times over. I thought that he could give me the answers that I couldn’t get from the demons. And in his own way he did. He took me to an abandoned building, probably in case my power activated again. This way if I destroyed something it would be fine, it was going to be torn down tomorrow. I think he was going to ask me about it but before he could I fell asleep. I was tired and drained and he watched over me all night.
When I woke up it was early in the morning and he was still awake watching me. We sat in silence for a while and eventually he threw a pop tart at my head. Part of me wanted to leave, I was cold, tired, sore and hungry so I took the pop tarts and waited patiently for him to explain. I guess he wanted to judge my reaction to what had happened to see if I thought it was a dream or something. But I was perfectly calm as I had long ago given up any hope that it was just a dream. The only thing on my mind other than getting answers was getting home before my parents realized that their four year old had been out all night. And this reaction was enough to tell him that this was not the first time I had been attacked.
And then he began to tell me. Some of it I’d already figured out but I didn’t interrupt him. Have you ever told someone about the magical world, Duke? I never asked you before. You grew up in the magical world Duke, you were born into it but I was not. You can never really understand what it is like. Having a whole new world opened up to you so suddenly like that. And it’s not easy to open it up to someone else, god only know how many times I’ve screwed that up. But he did a pretty good job considering that when he saved my life he hadn’t expected to have to. But he was a little tactless about it though.
He started off by asking me if I knew what was going on and all I did was shake my head no and so he began his speech. He told me that magic was real and that I was what was called a magical. He used small words and talked down to me because I was so young. Normally I would called him on the patronizing but I held my tongue and let him tell me what I wanted so desperately know. He told me that I could never tell anyone what had happened. He gave me a small brief on what demons were before he presented me with the Great Choice: Fight or Flee. He sugar coated nothing and scared me greatly though I tried not to show it. He told me that whatever I decided I could never trust anyone ever again.
I had more trouble swallowing that than the fact that I could apparently cast magical spells by saying a few simple words. At four I was still happy and pretty much trusted everyone - not like nowadays where I am on guard even around my perfectly mortal and non-threatening high school principal. But I was also smart and already my world was ruled by logic. So even though most four year olds still believed in fairies I did not. Magical spells didn’t not fit into my head even if I could make room for demons and vampires.
Next he spoke to me of personal gain and recited some of the basic rules to me. Then he handed me a low level spell book and disappeared before I could ask him anything else and the building that I was in began to come in around me and I ran away. I never saw him again and he never even told me his name. I didn’t know until this very year that he was called Kite.
Even though I didn’t believe him about being able to cast spells I still read the book that he had given me. I read it front to back, over and over again until I had perfectly memorized the entire thing. But I didn’t cast any of the spells for a very long time. I studied the whole of the book every free chance I got. It was never out of my sight. I took it with me everywhere to make sure no one ever found it. Even after every word in the book had become permanently burning into my memory I refused to call on it. I was attacked every now and then but I always relied on my power. Until one day when it was not enough.
