unconventional cures
neven Skin
Sure, dark spots may be cute on Dalmatians, but on your face? Not so much. Brighten up the dull trouble spots by using a little bit of yogurt.

“The lactic acid helps fade discolorations and brown spots,” says DC-based dermatologist Hema Sundaram, MD, who is also the author of Face Value: The Truth About Beauty— And A Guilt-Free Guide To Finding It. “It exfoliates your skin gently, giving it a healthy glow.”

Dry Skin
Eggs aren’t just for breakfast. To prepare a beauty mask for dry skin, take one egg, one teaspoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil, and a few drops of rose water, which is great for calming skin too. Mix and use as a mask.

Almond oil, an emollient, also works wonders to soften and soothe skin. Use it after showering, or on a clean face before going to bed. For soft, rejuvenated skin, apply freshly cut and mashed grapes.

Drinking grapes can get you drunk, but smashing them on your face will keep you looking youthful. Packed with antioxidants, the linoleic acid in every part of the grape, including the seeds, skin and pulp, has great moisturizing benefits. Hmm…I guess anyone who makes wine by stepping in the grape barrel gets somewhat of a pedicure too.

Acne
There’s almost nothing as devastating as a pimple. OK, a bad haircut is up there too. But for that unsightly intruder, dab lightly with carrot oil (note: not carrot seed oil). Used since the 16th century to treat skin diseases, this wonder oil contains carotenoid antioxidants (which converts to Vitamin A). Your skin will clear faster than you can say “What’s up, Doc?”

“Carrot oil protects human cells from harmful free-radical attack,” says Dr. Sundaram. “It also has a beneficial effect on premature aging, cancer, and other degenerative diseases.”

Frizz
Your fried tresses are starved for some moisture and while olive oil is great to condition your hair, it tends to get too oily. Best to drizzle this on during intense nothing-to-do that night treatments. Karen Shelton, CEO/Founder of HairBoutique.com, has a great alternative. She recommends massaging a tiny drop of pure jojoba oil between your hands and then “finger picking” it through your hair to soothe frizz.

“Jojoba oil is most like the sebum and oil produced by the human scalp, so unless you use tons of it, it’s never oily,” Shelton says. “I use it on my own hair and it works really well. The key is to use just a tiny bit and then blend well.”

Oil
If your hair is already a greasy mess, cornstarch is your savior. Even expensive name brand hair powders have cornstarch as their main ingredient. Sprinkle a little on your fingers and glide it through the oily parts of your hair. Then, brush or comb the cornstarch out. Make sure you only use a tiny bit, or you may go from a greasy mess to a powdery one.

For oily skin, squeeze some lemon juice into a bowl of iced water. Splash on to curb the oil and it smells great too.

Static
Winter is great since there isn’t as much humidity in the air, but there is a new problem that arises with pull-over-the-head sweaters…fly-aways. Never pretty. So how do you stop your locks from looking like you just put your freshly manicured finger in a socket? Dryer softening sheets. Swipe one over your hair and static fright be gone.
