Guardians of Toshadow: Finding the Princess - Chapter THREE
Proof of Magic

Kit walked into school the next morning. She felt strange wearing gloves in warm weather. She hoped people wouldn’t notice and she knew they wouldn’t, mortals were not the smartest creatures on the planet. She sat down in her seat. Bunny was the next person to walk into the room. It was just the two of them. Bunny paused for a moment, clearly wondering if it was all some strange dream. Kit of course knew that it was not all a dream, she had the gloves. She also knew what magic could do to people, what it had done to her. Bunny was generally a very sweet girl, if only a little bit annoying. Bunny was a good person and magic would surely strip her of that.
“Hey, Kit,” said Bunny.
“What do you want?” asked Kit.
“To talk,” said Bunny, “About yesterday.”
“So I beat up a bunch of pigheaded guys,” said Kit, “What’s the big idea?”
“That’s not what I was talking about,” said Bunny.
“We covered all of this when you followed my to my locker after class,” said Kit.
“No I meant about, you know,” said Bunny.
“Clearly I don’t know,” said Kit and suddenly it dawned on Bunny that if Kit did not remember than it must have been a dream after all.
“Never mind,” said Bunny and she sat down. She had bought it, Bunny had a very logical brain and magic did not fit in there. She wanted to believe it and so Kit let her. Kit looked at the door and Kita was standing in it staring at her angrily. Kit sighed and got up, she was in trouble now.
“I’ll be right back,” said Kit and she got up to talk to Kita.
“Kit Thompson!” yelled Kita and then another student walked right through her, causing Kit jump, “That’s right, you’re the only who can see me.” Kit walked as calmly as she could into the nearest bathroom.
“What?” asked Kit angrily, when they were alone.
“How dare you do that!” yelled Kita.
“Do what?”
“How dare you tell them it wasn’t real!”
“How dare you pull them into this!”
“What gives you the right to stop them?”
“What gives you the right to make them?”
“I am the Powers That Be.”
“So? No one being shall have power over the rest. Do you know who said that?”
“I did.”
“I know, I’m not entirely sure how I know but I know. And I won’t let you destroy anymore lives to do something I can do by myself.”
“Won’t that destroy your life?”
“What life?”
“You can’t do it alone.”
“Says who? I’ve harder solo missions before, you should know.”
“As you should know where you have seen Kiki and Bunny before.”
“You mean the dreams? That was a coincidence.”
“You don’t believe in coincidences.”
“I can always start.”
“How could it be a coincidence? You’ve been dreaming about them for years, since you were a child. Over and over again.”
“Tell them.”
“Never,” said Kit and Kita raised her hand at Kit’s head. Kit grabbed it and she screamed. She fell over and screamed even louder. Her head was erupting in pain as a vision swept across it.
“Tell them.”
“No.” She screamed again
“Tell them.”
“No!” Another vision came at her.
“You are making me do this to you. Just tell them.”
“No.” She screamed even more.
“Tell them.”
“No.” She collapsed on the bathroom floor.
“Tell them.” Another vision came over her. Kit was strong but she wouldn’t last much longer under these conditions.
“No.” Kita realized that mental anguish was not working fast enough. She raised her hand higher and brought it down like she was holding a whip. Kit screamed even more as her body erupted in pain as thousands of cuts appeared on her.
“Tell them.”
“No,” said Kit weakly.
“Tell them, or this will happen to them.” Pain erupted from everywhere, her body and her brain, she could take it only a little longer and there was no way they could.
“Fine,” said Kit in defeat and Kita vanished. Kit stumbled out of the bathroom as her wounds disappeared. The blood was gone but her pain remained. Her body was still in pain as she crashed into her classroom door and fell through it.
“Kit!” screamed Bunny as Kit started to sway and Bunny rushed to her side. Then Kit fainted onto the floor. It all hurt so much and she could not take it. Her brain hurt from the visions, her body hurt from the attack and her heart hurt at her surrender. She hated surrendering, it didn’t come naturally to her.
“Kit!” screamed Bunny as she knelt down. Miss. Herman came to Kit’s side instantly and put a hand on her forehead.
“She burning up,” said Miss. Herman, “Someone take her to the Nurse’s Office.”
“I’ll do it,” said Bunny and she tried to lift Kit.
“Kiki, help her,” said Miss. Herman.
“Yes Miss Herman,” said Kiki and she helped lift Kit and they carried her out into the hallway, “What happened to her?”
“I don’t know,” said Bunny and Kit opened her eyes.
“Ow,” said Kit.
“What happened to you?” asked Bunny.
“There is something I need to tell you,” said Kit and she struggled to sit up.
“Are you okay?” asked Bunny.
“I’m fine,” said Kit, “I’ve been through worse.” She stood up and started to walk.
“Where are you going?” asked Bunny.
“Come with me,” said Kit, “There is something I need to show you, both of you.” They followed her into an empty science classroom. She sat down, she was still so tired.
“What is it?” asked Kiki.
“Everything that happened last night happened,” said Kit. Neither of them spoke.
“What?” asked Kiki, “There is no such thing as magic.”
“Want to bet?” asked Kit and she ducked down under the sink. She stared at a pipe that went to the sink.
“What are you doing?” asked Bunny.
“Sarnia,” whispered Kit. She was so quite they did no hear her nor did they see the pipe glow. Kit stood up and turned on the water. But instead of water there was a stream if purple bubbles that decided to float around them.
“How’d you rig that?” asked Bunny and Kit sighed.
“You need more proof?” asked Kit and they nodded. Kit walked over to the teacher’s desk and grabbed a sharpie and drew a very strange circle. When she was done Bunny and Kiki looked down at the table and saw this:

“What is it?” asked Bunny.
“Kiki?” asked Kit, “What is your favorite color?
“Purple,” said Kiki. Kit clapped her hands together and slapped them down upon the strange circle. It glowed and when the light disappeared the table was now purple.
“How did you do that?” asked Bunny.
“You need more?” asked Kit and Bunny nodded her head. Kiki shook hers and Kit sighed. Scientific brains, could they ever truly grasp magic? Kit thought for the best plan and she had it. She grabbed Bunny’s arm,
“What are you doing?” asked Bunny.
“Lusta bana,” said Kit and she waved her hand over Bunny’s arm. Then her arm turned into crystal.
“Ah!” screamed Bunny.
“Do you think I can fake this?” asked Kit.
“No,” said Bunny.
“Finally,” said Kit, “Anab Atsul.”
“Where’d you learn that stuff?” asked Bunny.
“I stayed up all night and studied,” said Kit.
“Cool,” said Bunny.
“Kiki?” asked Kit.
“Yeah?” asked Kiki unsurely.
“Can you take up to the um, what do you call it?” asked Kit.
“Secret base?” suggested Bunny.
“It kind of sounds like a clubhouse or something,” said Kiki.
“Then what do you want to call it?” asked Kit.
“How about Hideout?” asked Kiki.
“Why Hideout?” asked Kit.
“It gives it a peaceful and safe sounding name,” said Bunny, “Like in our Hideout we can escape the rest of the world.
“Hideout?” asked Kiki, “I like it.”
“Then The Hideout it is,” said Kit, “Kiki can you take us to The Hideout?”
“I don’t know,” said Kiki.
“Bunny, grab on to her arm,” said Kit.
“Okay,” said Bunny and Kit leaned forward onto Kiki. She wrapped her arm around her stomach and whispered something into her ear. The next thing that any of them knew they were in The Hideout.
“Way to go Kiki,” said Kit and Kiki started to shake, “Calm down. I’m not actually going to do it. I just had to scare you.”
“Oh,” said Kiki.
“Do what?” asked Bunny.
“You don’t want to know,” said Kit, “Which reminds me, I have to come up with more interesting ways of scaring the crap out of Kiki.”
“‘Interesting’?” asked Bunny, “Oh no!”
“What?”
“School!” said Bunny, “We just cut class.”
“Is that all?”
“What do you mean ‘is that all’?”
“You’ve never ditched? Trust me, you’ll get over it.”
“How can you say that?”
“Because I have been ditching since I was eight. It’s no big deal.”
“For you, maybe. Wait - eight?”
“Besides, they probably think we are all in the Nurse’s Office.”
“So?”
“That means we won’t get caught for a while, enjoy it.”
“No!”
“I’m going to look around this place.”
“Kit!”
“Get over it.”
“No, look at this,” said Bunny and Kit turned around to see her. She was holding a scroll. Kit read it, it listed the powers they were supposed to collect and next to them were their names, which represented who the power belonged to.
“Hand it up,” said Kit.
“Kit,” called Kiki, “Check this out.” Kit walked over to the closet. Inside of it there were three masks, a purple one, a blue one and a grey one. Kit picked up the grey one and looked at it as Kiki grabbed the purple one and Bunny took the blue one. Kit pressed it to her face. It latched on instantly and she wanted to rip it off of her. But then the magic of the mask started to wrap itself around her. It was warm and she let it engulf her body. It felt like ribbons of magical cloth were coming alive and spreading from her heart. She pressed her hands on her chest at the magic’s epicenter as the ribbons wrapped themselves around her torso and she felt her legs curl up into her. The magic at her heart started to glow brightly and exploded. It forced her arms to spread out. Her right arm shot up above her head with her index finger pointing up and becoming an epicenter of the magic ribbons, which wrapped themselves around her arm. Her left arm was pointed down and the palm of her left hand became another epicenter. Then her feet snapped together and another epicenter of the magic appeared at a point between her two big toes. The magical ribbons wrapped themselves tightly around her legs. When this was over she was able to move again and she curled into a ball again. She felt suddenly like she was floating in an empty blackness. Her entire buddy started to glow and the magical ribbons wrapped themselves around her entire body.
Then it was over. All of the motions she had been feeling hadn’t really happened. It was what her soul had felt. She was standing in The Hideout. She looked at herself. She was wearing completely different clothes. She was wearing black pants and spaghetti strap black shirt. On top of that she was wearing a grey cloak. It was knee length and the sleeves looked like wings, with a white trim on the edge of them and the bottom of the cloak. She was wearing very strange gloves. They were grey too and were elbow length. The weird parts were the hands of the gloves. There were kind of like triangles attached to rings on her middle fingers.
“Wow,” said Kit as she looked at herself. Her outfit was not the only thing that was different. She was wearing grey nail polish and she could feel some hidden weapons. She looked at the cloth of her cloak. It was smooth, it was magical.
“Wow, is right,” said Kiki, “Look at your face.” Kiki opened the door to the closet even more to reveal a mirror. Kit let out a gasp of shock.
“I look like a girl,” said Kit in disgust, “Wow words.”
“Words?” asked Bunny.
“In the mask,” said Kit, “Some kind of menu.” Kiki and Bunny placed their masks on. There was a flash of light. Bunny was a wearing a blue cloak with short sleeves a white stripe around the waist and had blue pants and a blue T-shirt on underneath it. Kiki was wearing a low collar, sleeveless purple cloak and dark purple pants and a purple halter-top.
“We’re like superheroes,” said Kiki, “With like secret identities and stuff.”
“Before you start flying off of roofs,” said Kit as she took the mask off, “You two will have to learn how not to die.”
“We know how not to die,” said Bunny.
“I mean,” said Kit, “You two won’t last five seconds in a real fight.”
“Hey,” said Bunny indignantly.
“I call them as I see them,” said Kit and she tripped them both with one kick.
“Ow,” said Kiki from the floor.
“I want to do this alone,” said Kit, “I don’t want you two to help. But if I ditch you guys the annoyingly all-powerful Powers That Be will hack inside my brain and curse me with eternal torment. I value my life, what little meaning it still holds for me it is still mine. So we are going to have to work together. I don’t like either of you, mostly because I don’t like anyone, ever. But seeing as how we are all stuck here in this I’ll have to get over it and so will the both of you. However I refuse to work with a couple of idiots, who are only going to slow me down for the five seconds you manage to stay alive.”
“Thanks,” said Kiki.
“So this is what I propose: I will train you, teach you how to fight. So you two won’t end up dead and I won’t end up with brain made of cream cheese.”
“Okay,” said Bunny, “When do we start?”
“Now,” said Kit, “Just so you know, when I am through with you two, you will regret being born.”
“What?” asked Kiki and they got up.
“We have a training room,” said Kit and she grabbed one of the books that had been supplied for them by Lilly. It was a low-level spell book, Kit already knew the spells in there but she had to appear to be studying. Besides she could make notes in it for them and there was never any harm in brushing up on the basics.
The first thing she had them do is warm up and stretch. She had Bunny go on the treadmill and had Kiki do some pull-ups. After forty-five minutes she had Bunny push-ups and put Kiki on the stair master. After another half of an hour they almost passed out but Kit would only allow them a small break. Then she had them attack a punching bad for an entire hour. After that the two of them could barely stand and Kit had made some kind of note on every page of her book so she sent them home. She could not help but think that this was going to take a while.
