Not so long ago... only about a year ago I received a phone call from one of my best friends. They found a bird that their cat, killer had got a hold of. From what they could tell in had a broken wing but I think something more than that was injured because when I got there the only movement was its pained breathing. We searched the internet and tried our best to fix it as most girls our age would have done but of course, we were only three girls. I lay my index finger across its chest as my friend shoo's the cat away. The heart beat is slowing. Slowing. Slowing. Faint. Gone. That very second was its last. That very breath will never be exhaled.
Not so long ago... only a summer ago my friend was walking me home from school. Even though we were walking slowly, it didn't take long to reach her street. She turned and I continued but I had only taken a few steps when I heard my name called. I turned and crossed the street, my friend leaning over something on the side of the road. I leaned down. There lay a dead bird, one wing stretched out. A single nail driven into its chest.
Not so long ago... Only hours ago My friend knocked on my door. Her bike was parked in front of the porch steps and on the handle bar sat a baby robin, no longer than my thumb, not old enough to fly. We road around to here she found it in the parking lot and where the different birds roosted all over the neighbor hood. The whole time it perched on my friends index finger, chirping away. No luck. We made some phone calls and spoke with a few people. There was a way to take care of it but neither of us was allowed. The nearest place that would take it in would be a 40 minute drive that no one was willing to make. At last my friend decides that it would be best to take it to an old womans house, where the birds gather and her many bird feeders. They nest in her trees and hollowed gourds and they drink in her marble bird baths. I watched her ride away with the chick on her finger, already realizing the chick wouldn't make it threw the night.
