5 1/4" floppy diskettes are as old as personal computers themselves. They were developed in the 1970s. sweatdrop

You can still buy ZIP Disks.

Zip drives were built to replace Floppy diskettes as a simple, portable storage device. The common ones hold as much as 100MB. But, ZIP disks were fragile, and expensive. They gained and lost popularity around the time Windows 2000 had built-in support for USB drives (Flash drives, hard drives, and Mp3 players) that could hold MUCH, MUCH more than 100MB.

That 5 1/4" floppy diskette holds 360KB, or about 1/5th of the storage of a typical floppy diskette.

That entire post in english: ZIP disks were a great thing at the time, but not for long. You can still buy ZIP disks. But they're wooorrrthhhhleeesss~.

flash drives are cheaper.

Or a super disk.

Wait, so that thing DOESN'T hold 1.44MB like it should?! For shame!

Well, Really...

It's meant and was made to hold 360KB. You see, just like hard drives, Floppy disks grew in storage size and shrunk in physical size. Early floppy disks were 8", and then 5", and then the 3 1/2" ones you see today.

Hard drives have done the same thing.

This is a FIVE MEGABYTE hard drive circa 1979. It's about the size of an entire computer tower today, and the machine it went down into was about the size of a washer or dryer.

Today, an iPod Video has a 30GB or 80GB hard drive inside, and that's roughly 30,000-80,000 megabytes.

It's them viruses that they dig out of Yosetime (sp? no...) Park, or Yellowstone, or something, dangerous chemies in Geyser mudpits or something. I watch a thing on PBS about technology, and they use those viruses to store data, creating like, 60GB on a nowadays floppy/Flashdrive.

something like that. ;>_> Bad memory.

PBS is the same station that reads books to kids and hosts talk circles about people with issues in their lives. They most likely made it up. 3nodding
