Post 2 - Combat: A Brief Synopsis

--~--~--~Combat: A Brief Synopsis~--~--~--

If you've read all the required readings, you should have a basic to advanced knowlege of how combat works! But just to be safe...

Combat is broken up into 2 parts. In the first part, the DM will post The enemies attacks and begining of round stats. After that, the players will post there actions and attacks in response to the enemies turn. Then The DM responds with a resolution post. Since the monster only declared there attacks, the DM asigns the enemies actions and spells. Then the Dm crunches all the math, figures out all appropriate damages and such, then attacks with the enemies again. Repeat steps 1 and 2 untill Players or Enemies die.

For more information about Combat, visit the [System Rules] The Roleplaying System thread.

If you have more questions on how combat works, visit the FAQ thread! If your questions still are unanswered, you can also visit the Q & A thread to see if it's been asked before there, and if it hasn't, then ask there!

Post 3 - Step 1: DM/Monster Post

--~--~--~Step 1: DM/Monster Post~--~--~--

There are 2 different versions of the Step 1 process. though they both stick to the same format, they differ in the time that they are used.

Version 1: This only happens on the very first post of the fight. The Dm will describe how the enemy encounters the group. If it is a new Monster, the post will contain the new monsters stats, or they will be located in the Monster List or Bosses threads. after that, the DM will announce what the monster will be doing.

Version 2: This version happens every other round than the first. It contains all of the above, but it will also contain the resolution from the previous round. All relevent player and monster stats should be labled, with there current HP. After that, it should contain the standard format of what the enimies will do this turn.
*Note: The DM may have to use extra posts to roll additional dice for the monster.*

Now lets take a look at what that actually looks like.
Version 1:

Grand_Commander13
You don't need to contemplate the issue for too long. Four Imps, two Blazens, and two Fire Elementals move to attack you. The Imps can't do much prior to charging themselves up for combat, but they're additional targets to worry about while the Blazens charge in, attacking and Smashing XX and Shadow while each Fire Elemental uses Singe on Wick and one attacks nuku while the other attacks Tarothin.

Sometimes the DM, for the players sake, will also include the actions and spells of the enemies.

Version 2:

Grand_Commander13
Just in case I didn't say, I'm assuming everyone drank from the pool and began the fight fully healed.

nuku just shreds the Imps. eek

XX takes 12 damage from being attacked and Smashed by the first Blazen, while Shadow takes 5 damage (and has the Smash prevented by Wick's Stunning Blow), of which she resists 4.

Firing back, Wick hits the first Blazen for 10 damage with his special attack, and XX finishes it off with 8 damage from a Frost. XX hits the second Blazen with an attack dealing five damage, and Shadow's summon joins in the beatdown dealing four damage twice, leaving the Blazen with two life left.

The first Fire Elemental hits nuku for 5 damage, while the second attacks Tarothin for 9 damage, 1 of which is regenerated.

At the beginning of the second round, here is where you stand (though Shadow still has 5 points of healing to dole out for the first round):

XX: 18/25, 7 AP, 4 MP.
Wick: 22/30, 8 AP, 6 MP.
Tarothin: 12/20 6 AP, 5 MP. (+3 Magic.)
nuku: 15/15, 4 AP, 3 MP.
Shadow: 20/20, 4 AP, 1 MP. (+3 Magic.)

Party pool: 10 AP, 8 MP.

Blazen: 2/15
Fire Elemental #1: 30/30
Fire Elemental #2: 30/30

In the second round, the Blazen continues his attack against Shadow, while the Fire Elementals activate Power Up for their Attack scores and continue their attacks against Nuku and Tarothin (first two dice are for their first round, the second two dice are for their second round).

So as you can see, The Version 2 will usually contain alot more information, because it includes the prevoius resolution.

Now lets move on to the Character Post...

Post 4 - Step 2: Character Post

--~--~--~Step 2: Character Post~--~--~--

Ok! Monsters are attacking you! What do you do! Attack them back! When you make your post, it should contain 2 different parts. A "Flavor Text", and a "Technical Text".

Your flavor text basically is a written description of what your character does in response to the monster attack. This actual text does't represent the RPS system at all, it's just a fun way to explain what your character does and lets you be as creative (or not) as you want to be! So lets say that you are attacking a goblin, and hitting it with a spell. It would look something like this...

John Doe rushes into the fray swinging his fists wildly. By chance he happened to strike a goblin accross the face. Jumping back after the blow, he focuses his inner energy. A small ball of fire formed in his hands, and with a quick jerk of the wrist, it flew towards the goblin toasting him good.

Or this...

John rushed foward at attacked the goblin, launching a singe spell at him as well.

You can be as descriptive as you want! it's all in good fun!

The "Technical Text" covers the actual meat and bones of the RPS system. This is usually displayed after the flavor text. Simply put, its the actual games terms used durring that round of combat. Since it is considered and OOC thing, most people will put it into parenthesis. If we use the same example as before, it would look something like this...

(Attack Goblin, Dice for attack, Singe spell goblin)

Or...

{Attack=goblin}
{Dice=Attack}
{Spell=Singe=Goblin}

Optionally, players may indicate the amount of HP, AP, and MP they have at the end of there posts for easy referance in consecutive turns.

So if you throw all those together, you post will look like this!

John rushed foward at attacked the goblin, launching a singe spell at him as well.
(Attack Goblin, Dice for attack, Singe spell goblin)
HP=20
AP=1
MP=0

*REALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember to roll your dice!!! If you forget, don't delete your post and resubmit it. It will look like your cheating! Please use another post to roll if you forget.

Also remember, there is no "Standard Format" to use. As long as a DM can read and understand what your saying without having to guess, you are good! This should at least give you the knowlege you need to start!

Now you have all the knowlege you need to survive in the RPS! Have fun and be active!
