TOS Dress

I'm creating a TOS dress (science officer of course) and I'm doing it without a pattern. Though, I can't decide what I should do about it. Should I keep to the original designs even though they're more difficult and have a higher chance for horrible mistakes (and it will take much longer, I may grow weary and stop production all together), or should I simplify the pattern to minimize incidence?

What do you think?

I say simplify it that's what I'm planning to do.

but mine is for a future convention in which I cosplay as Uhura sweatdrop
