Being… some small percentage of Chinese, I cannot ask either of my parents for help with this because neither of them can understand Chinese, my father being black and my mother being East Indian raised in America. So, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the translation for these characters in pinyin and English? It is a Chinese name that was given to me by a Chinese person at my mother's job during Asian Heritage Month last year, and I would love to know its meaning. I tried asking my Chemistry teacher last year because she is Chinese as well and was raised in China and Taiwan before coming to the United States and she told me it was Wei Man Hua, but I want another opinion because I don't get the same characters when I type it into the computer with IME. 谢谢!
Wei Man Hua or something else?

I need more information on the pinyin part. (I don't know how to read them yet)
Like on the pinyin part, wei has a certain tone to how you say it.

actually, i just ask my mom and she said this:
the first letter is ai, there is no special meaning to it, its just used for names. (although there is a word that is 'ai' but it is written differently in chinese and it means love) the second letter is mei, meaning pretty the last is da, its like answer
but my mom also said that if u translated into english, it would be like amanda. is ur english name amanda?

Yes, my English name is Amanda, and I realize that most foreign names are often translated by sound in Chinese, is that correct? That is why the name probably seems so strange. Thank you so, so much for all of your help, I have always been curious about what it should be pronounced as. Is Ai Mei Da Cantonese or Mandarin, or are they both different pronunciations of it in Mandarin?
EDIT. But yes, I get the same characters when I type Ai Mei Da with IME ~ (^^)

oo.. cool! blaugh then i did it right.
Ai mei da is in mandarin, usually catonese and mandarin are the same in writing, but just a different dialect.
mm.. sort of i guess, most of the time is if u are chinese but had an english name before ur chinese name, usually they would just use ur english name. and also if u were only a small percentage, it would probably be a little different. 3nodding

I am curious what you mean by it would probably be a little different because I am… some percentage or other. I am not exactly sure because I only recently found out about my Asian heritage about two years ago, I know, it's sad (*_*). That makes me happy to hear that Mandarin and Cantonese are written the same because I think I would die if I had to learn characters all over again.
That makes sense to me, since my English name is my legal/given name after all.

I hate writing chinese because most characters are hard to write. There are too many lines and dashes and slashes and stuff. There are several thousand characters i think. I understand most of the simple ones though.

Well, I suppose technically it's not because it's the Chinese rendition of an English name.
