toothpicks suck a good detailing brush has a finer point than a toothpick, go out and invest in a badass set of brushed and take care of them they will last a good while ive been painting for 10+ years and have gone thru maybe 3 sets.

I found the that points of toothpicks were far too fat to work with.

I found the that points of toothpicks were far too fat to work with.
So use an exacto knife to cut it to a fine point.

They work fine, if you...

...trim them to a fine point with a modelling knife.
...trim them again whenever the end gets soggy or curled.
...use them to dab rather than stroke.

I use them to paint the eyes and teeth on minis. 3nodding

Here's a picture of a couple Guardsmen's faces that I used toothpicks on. (I later turned them into avatars for different forums, hence the text...)

If you dont have a small brush, I found that a pin worked well for details like eyes.

I used to use toothpics to do my spacemarine eyes, but I play Imperial Guard now, and I rarely paint eyes, and only do them on commanders, or guy's I spend a lot of time on (My Vestroyans, and DeathKorps)
but I now use a 10/0 paintbrush for it (10/0 means 1/10th the size of a size 0 brush)

Toothpicks are best for something easy, like the trim on my shoulder pads is done with toothpicks/lice finding sticks*Scratchs head* I find they work well, I'll have to post some pics of them.

One thing tooth picks are good for is using it to spread PVA glue on the bases of your guys, it gets a nice smooth layer if you use the side of it.

That works well accutally, though I dont find PVA holds will enough

Don't use plastic glue.. doesn't work at all. It holds it well, but doesn't cover the whole thing straight away. scream

PVA glue is good enough, and it sticks enough to dry brush it.

After attaching the sand to the base, drop a little watered down white glue on the sand, it will seal it inplace, but you need to get it on all of the sand. Else wize it comes off in sections.
