So, I've been drawing for about 2 years now, but I've more or less only practiced females (anime style) and I think I'm adequate when I draw them. Now though, I really need to start working on making my guys look like guys (not just flat chested girls sweatdrop ) so any advice would be appreciated. I just switched my style a few days ago (april 23/07) and it seemed to help a little.

Note: Since I wasn't really happy with these they are all done in 3H pencil only. I darkened them in photoshop, but they still aren't high quality.

Girls

Girl 1: This is my latest female sketch. I don't usually do fade outs or close ups, so this is kind of weird for me. Advice on proper fade outs would be especially appreciated.

Girl 2: This is what came out when I used photoshop to color it. I don't think it turned out too bad, but I only have a mouse to work with. Advice on getting cleaner lineart and coloring stuff in photoshop would be awesome. Of course with any other kind of feedback. ^-^

(These are semi-models of Rin from the anime 'Nagarasete Airantou' for anyone that thinks she's familiar.)

Girl 3: This is a much more my style. I changed some things around when scanning it in, but I still can't seem to get it (Scanner res/color curves etc...) right for a clean scan I can use as lineart. sweatdrop And my backgrounds/objects always turn out that way. (Really, truly sad. rolleyes )

Girl 4: The newest one I've done, she was actually meant to test the techniques in a digital art guide I picked up (Hence the incomplete arm). Nonetheless, I was happy with how it turned out and thought I'd share it. Enjoy.

Greetings~! It's early in the morn for me, but since I'm hardly ever on, I figured I'd post a bit before I retired for the night.

For all of your pictures, there are proportion problems. I can't really tell you exactly how to fix that, but I'll advise that you should practice drawing from life and/or from pictures.

As for your guy, it looks to me that you drew him flat out with clothes on him. Some people can do that, though I don't really... know... any of those people, else I'd ask them for advice on how to do it. Would really save me time considering how I draw... Anyway, I know it saves time, or at least, it can save time, to draw this way, but the downside is that if you're not really familiar with how the body is supposed to be proportioned, you just end up with more problems to go back and fix. I would suggest that you start drawing figures in their skivvies (that is, if you're not comfortable drawing n***s or your parents/peers give you a hard time of it). =3

I agree with Mar.. it does take practice.. and most people who can pull off the flat drawing thing well... usually CAN draw anatomy and whatnot.. kinda like Picasso ish. Anyways, I know most people start out by drawing their favorite characters (god knows I did) but if you want to have your own style or improve yourself, it is best to draw figures from live ones... you can apply whatever style you want from then on. 3nodding

I will tell you exactly what I told someone else. :3 Because basics are important, yaaay~ owo <3

Yush, anatomy is important, and proportions are as well!

When beginning a drawing try drawing a stick figure with all the joints, so that you know how every body part connects to the other. If you're not sure, ask a fried to pose for you. Always try to draw from life. :'D

Clothes/Folds Tutorial

The reason I linked you to that is because (I'm lazy and) it links to all her other tutorials in the description. Look at them, they are very helpful and easy to follow.

Basic Head tutorial

Basics are boring, but they are important. You need a foundation and this'll get you there. :'D Practice makes better. G'luck! <3

I, also, find myself to be much better at drawing women than men. There's really only one way to get better at it, though, and that's by drawing more men. Howeverrrr-- in the interest of drawing men who look like men, and not men who look like, as you put it, "flat chested girls", you'd need to familiarize yourself with the differences between the male and female body.

What I would advise doing, then, is - honestly - drawing nude figures. Even if you clothe them afterward, start every drawing off as a nude figure. When you're drawing your dudes, you want them to look like they're really guys. Sketch our their chest muscles before you put cothes on 'em, this way you can make sure their torsos are shaped and proportioned right.

And then there's also http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25247002/
Don't just look at that and go "Oh yeah, okay I get it"-- though. Looking at that, you can see how the muslces really affect the way the body is shaped? This is a real pot-kettle moment here, I'm basically telling you to do something that, if I knew what was good for me, I'd do myself, BUT--

Get some anatomy pictures and sketch out musculature. You know those sick looking pictures of a person, all muslce, with their skin "off"? Draw those. Draw from those. Don't trace, but copy from it. You'll learn where the lines belong as you practice on that. Think of it as memorization?
