College gunman disturbed teachers, classmates
They announced this today at my school (I meant MY school...not Virgina Tech, lol). It was a pretty big deal, and the whole school remained silent for 30 seconds in respect and remembrance of the victims that were killed.
Now I have a feeling that school security's going to be more uptight, even though the chances of my school having a shooting is postively slim...
...okay...well...not anymore. confused
...and what's scary about this is that this shooting happened just 4 days before the anniversary of the Colombine High School shooting.
UPDATED: Asians fear backlash after Virginia Tech shooting
UPDATE #2! A Murderer's Final Message - Virginia Tech shooter rants in statement, videos sent to NBC
...I am still shocked, so very shocked. I don't really know what to say. I mean, this is crazy. I pretty much have mixed feelings right now.
UPDATE #3! They posted one of Cho's play writings on thesmokinggun.com:
Virginia Killer's Violent Writings
He's not a very good writer...
His writing style seems so childish. Too much use of unnecessary profanity takes the writing taste away.
no offence, but seriously. and the teachers call this deadly? confused

And four days before Hitler's birthday, I think they said in the newspaper. x___X
It's so sad. We didn't really talk much about it today at school, my best friend and the boy sitting next to her, and I-- were. >.< So many innocent people.
I'm frightened for my own school. I couldn't bear to see people I know get hurt.

[ 聖ルヂーと言う:]
I was extremely ashamed when I had heard that the gunman was a fellow Asian. I don't understand what could have driven him to kill so many people whom he didn't even know. Having lost a cousin to being shot in New York City, I understand how the families and friends of the victims feel and I want only my best wishes for them.
The only thing that annoyed me was that, when we discussed it in my Sociology class today, someone brought up that it was an Asian student and one girl believed the gunman started the shooting because of grades, since "Asians have to be at the top of their game." That made me angry because there are more things we care about than that, and there could have been any number of reasons that led this boy to deciding to stage this shooting. I mean, the situation is upsetting enough without bringing up stereotypes and people should be more concerned with how the friends and families of the victims feel; why it happened is important, but the fact that something this horrible happened at all is even more important than that.
I almost thought that my cousin was there, but I forgot that he attends VCU and not Virginia Tech. It's really hard to believe that things like this happen, even though they do.

Ah, I brought it up too, and I apologize ahead of time. I suppose it's to be expected in an Asian community forum, especially since the gunman was Asian, but people should be more worried about what happened rather than what it has to do with race, especially since the gunman and the victims could have been anybody. I'm hoping it doesn't turn into too much of a racial issue because there's more important things to discuss about the incident and we can talk about racial issues anywhere else in this guild, and here's really not the place.

Shootings usually don't really affect me, because I've never lost anyone in a shooting incident. But now that I think about it, and all the things that my school and many schools are doing now to strengthen their security and safeness of students....I don't know what to say. And just when I thought I took my school's over protectiveness for granted. And just the thought that when you think everyone's going fine and then all of a sudden, people you know and love are gone.
I'll be praying for these victims and their families.
and I'm afraid that the stereotyping and racial battle has already begun...at least by some comments on Youtube (some students have captured clips of the shooting via mobile phone, video, etc.). But you know how Youtube is. Some people that comment there are usually just plain dumb and ignorant, and want to annoy the heck out of each other.

Shootings do usually affect almost everybody in some way or another, and that tightening of security is a good example of that. With the lockdown that we had a few months ago and the recent shootings at Virginia Tech, I'm grateful for the security now because until it happens, it's hard to understand how terrifying and saddening it really is. I feel especially terrible for the victims, who were in college and working towards making their own future and now they won't even have the chance to accomplish their dreams and become their own person out in the world.
I didn't think about the racial battles when it happened, but now that I think about it, it's just like September 11 when people targeted Middle Eastern-Americans just because the terrorists happened to be from the Middle East. I don't worry about people on YouTube or on the Internet in general because most of them are rude and obnoxious just because they know they are anonymous, but I am going to defend myself if people want to say anything to my face or any of my Asian friends. I'm really hoping that it's not happening a lot in real life, but it probably will.

This whole incident is very disturbing and sad. My heart goes out to all of the victim's families and the University of Virginia Tech. Being a college student myself, it gives me a more open perspective that such a massacre as this can happen right here at my campus. It doesn't really affect me more because he was asian, if it were still any other person of different ethnicity, I don't think it would have changed my thoughts of this tragedy.

All I can is that's it's a "sign of the times." people dying everywhere I go, children dying of starvation, preventable diseases, and abuse. It's horrible and every night I always prayed that if there's anything I can do to help, anything, I'd do it. But now, I don't know. When it comes to the shooter's ethnicity, I don't care, what I do care about is the fact that senseless bloodshed occurred, which could of been prevented.

Hmm...well I found an article about some of the Virgina Tech racial issues here: Asians fear backlash after Virginia Tech shooting
