As it goes, yaoi comics created by Westerners is becoming quite popular, so we can rejoice in the fact that people closer to home are giving us yaoi goodness which we don't have to wait to be translated and imported and licensed! Yay! 4laugh Although Japanese yaoi rules too, of course... blaugh

A question on my mind is that Japan has yaoi anime. America and Europe have their own version of yaoi manga, but none yet on TV. Yaoi anime is mostly created from existing manga, but they are still done into animation. How come there aren't any slash cartoons in the Western world yet? Are we not ready for that big step, to see Western animated characters of the same sex kissing on TV? I mean, they could add that on Adult Swim or something, no? (I've never watched Adult Swim, by the way, so if this wouldn't apply, forgive me sweatdrop ) Most gay characters in Western shows are used as parodies or homosexual stereotypes, but is there no North American or European cartoon exploring the love lives of two men?

Discuss: - Western yaoi/shounen-ai cartoons? (Or should it be called slash? Unless that is only used for same-sex pairings of live-action shows and movies) Would you watch them? (I know I would! wink )

- Any Western yaoi manga you would like to see converted to animation? (like Dany and Dany's work? I love them! *_*)

- Are there any such cartoons I've just never heard about? sweatdrop

I think what western networks are worried about is how the population all together will see it. The maturity in lots of western children isn't the best it could be. Stations aren't worried about children seeing extremely breasted women, or Naruto's sexy jutsu, but they do get rid of the 3 second kiss in episode three.

Most kids are like, sex, naked women, no problem. Boys kissing, animated or not however, is a talk2hand nono. I personally would love to see Off*Beat turned into an anime. It's a really cute story about two new yorkers. And since the manga is so short, I beleive by the time it's long enough to made into an anime, America will have jumped that hump, and will show yaoi animes. I hpe so anyway sweatdrop

It is a huge step, I think. I mean, we don't exactly see it as a big deal but other people do; they see it as a huge deal. It's all about what the kids will take from it.
The cartoon Static Shock, for example, has long since been canceled -- but it was originally based on a comic called 'Static' by Wayne McDuffie. Static, or Virgil, has a large group of friends, his best friend being Frieda and one of his other friends being Richard "Rick" Stone. Richard later in the series came out and admitted that he was homosexual, and it was a whole series of issues in which Virgil has to put aside his discomfort with it and mature as a character.
In the cartoon Static Shock, Virgil's best friend is a combination of Frieda and Rick, his name being Richie. His looks are based off of Anthony Rapp, and Wayne McDuffie says himself that in his oppinion, Richie is gay -- but it was not allowed to be brought up in the series because it's an American children's cartoon.
Personally, I think it would have been great if it could have been brought up in the cartoon. Static Shock handled a lot of hard-hitting issues that young children could benefit from learning about, like racism. Imagine, you're a kid, and you really like this super hero named Gear on this show Static Shock, and then tonight there's an episode where you learn he's homosexual. Oh my God, a gay super hero? Well then, it must be okay!
I don't see where it could be considered a bad idea, personally. But for some reason they keep finding reasons to destroy any hint of such content anywhere, like in, somebody mentioned above me, Naruto. I guess it's just something America'll have to learn to accept.
Eventually.

There are two major issues here that you gotta keep in mind.

1) In the western world cartoons are considered to be for children. Sure there are a animated shows that are for adults, but the majority of animated TV is made for kids. You can tell by the terminology we use. Even anime fans differentiate between Eastern and Western animation by calling one anime and the other cartoons.

2) Homosexuality is not accepted. It's just not. I mean, sure there are people who accept homosexuality or at the very least have a to-each-their-own kind of stance on it. But majority of the western, and Eastern, world have a whole lot of problems with gays and lesbians. Hence yaoi/slash/what have you only appeals to a small group of people. No self respecting entertainment channel (like Cartoon Network for example which in and of itself caters to a certain group of people) is going to create cartoon shows about gays. If they make it for kids, parents will complain. If they put in on Adult Swim, the majority of the AS audience will not watch.

And we're not even thinking about sponsors, which are the life blood of television entertainment. If they don't like the politics, they'll pull out and then the company loses a whole lot of money.

Well, I mean I never seriously considered putting these shows on air, but perhaps sold as videos or on a special channel to order? neutral

I mean, obviously stations will not air gay TV shows during the daytime where hapless children might come upon it, but aren't there channels like that that can be specially ordered? Anyone heard of Here!TV? That musn't be part of the regular channels...

Your answers are very insightful yet have deflated me a bit, but no worries; I see your points and I do agree. Yaoi is still a discreet hobby for many, but I just thought that someday it would be wonderful to see an animated show about homosexuality. I mean, if a show like Queer as Folk managed to become popular, perhaps cartoons aren't too far behind?

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but oh well... <:3

Yaoi is a niche within a niche. It's not as big as people like to think it is. It's not as accepted outside of anime as people would like. It's popular with anime fangirls, but in the great wide world, it's nothing more than gay comics. Outside of Japan, I imagine that animating such a story would be incredibly hard. For one, it's expensive and time consuming and you'd have to have some promise of profit. Without profit, there's no project.

I know that there's been a few yaoi flash animation projects that do exist. There is the very very awful anime/yaoi spoof Samurai Fantasy.

Also, Joe Phillips, a well known gay comic artist has produced two animated videos, which he admits were expensive and time consuming. The first film was animated with flash, the second was a 3-d endeavor. Both are rated NC-17, are not available to minors for obvious reasons and are also not allowed to be sold in some states.

The audience for both of these is very limited. The only people it would possibly interest is the gay community or squealing fangirls. Let's face it, squealing fangirls don't always have lots of money to throw around, so again, that cuts down on the biggest thing, profit.

Another problem is that homosexuality is not really accepted. It's tolerated to a certain extent, but it is by no means embraced. People don't want the icky gay infecting their children. At this year's Super Bowl, after Prince's half-time show with a guitar that was slightly phallic (as pretty much every long object is) complaints were received about how this image turned one viewer's son gay and ruined his life or some such nonsense. Having a cartoon with even a whiff of serious homosexuality (as opposed to the kind used for mocking humor) would have parents such as those, out for blood.

That brings me to another point, we have yet to have any sort of large scale attack on the genre. In the past, parents have flipped out over the content of mature manga. What happens when a clueless parent finally figures out what their kid is reading? What happens when someone finally realizes that their precious kidlet is sitting in a bookstore reading pornographic material that they so carelessly ripped the shrinkwrap off of? There will be backlash against yaoi. It hasn't happened yet, but it will. In such a delicately balanced genre, I think that it's best we don't tempt fate by demanding more animated material. There's more than enough manga to go around, so just kick back and enjoy what you have.

Fine. Guess I'll just have to make up my own little yaoi animations in my head.
I'm not complaining or anything, and if this never happens, it doesn't matter. Just a wistful idea of mine. :3

It's not that it won't ever happen. My major issue is with how some people think it's something that can happen tomorrow. If it were just a writer and an animation studio, then we'd probably have it already. There are lots of things going on.

With that said, I would like to mention LOGO. It's the first channel for the GLBT community. It's still a relatively new channel (I think two or three years old) but I'm sure that if any channel starts looking towards homosexually themed animation, it will be this one. I've already seen a short film using claymation.

Well let us take into account that MOST western "anime" styal shows are eww. Teen Titans=eww. Avatar= pretty good and very slashy. Now, Teen Titans being eww is my oppinion. Going into Avatar, some people are smart and know how to slip in things that would be less than satasfactory to the production place.( this goes along with Invader Zim and the bloody Gir's.. any way..) I think Avatar is good because it clearly get's across the message that Sokka( one of the main characters) is a flamer. But I'm sort of off topic.

If western "anime" creators wanted to creat a yaoi show, then they'd have to put in a lot of suttle hints; which would be a lot more work than the creation process. I would also like to bring up that most parents are evil whne it comes to raising their kids to "hate" or even "be violent" toward homosexuals. So a show about them and their love would get taken off the air so fast you wouldn't have time to blink.

Also, if this were to happen( which is unlikely) we'd see the "OMG! Like pretty in pink!" gay men. xp burning_eyes Or it actually turn out to be good and have a plot.( unlikely as well)

I just don't think the open world is ready.

^^ I'd love to see Avatar and Teen Titans in yaoi form! (Jerichooooo~)
I would also love to see it on Kappa Mikey! Or at least, Kappa Mikey discovering the dark side of japanese girls... xD
Steve McCracken-sensei should totally make a cute Shounen-ai cartoon in powerpuff-style. That'd be so cute >w<

EDIT: I just remembered Xander on Drawn Together is gay. They threw him a gay party xD

I know this isn't something that could happen overnight...

Also, Adult Swim is a humor network, correct?

They would have to use a VERY humourous storyline for it even to be considered. That... or a downright stupid storyline (Futurama, Family Guy... etc.)

Even then, the US is just not ready to take any yaoi. It would be amazing if we got our own yaoi channel, however. Although, it would probably be more like a hard core pr0n channel, not our fluff. >.<

Just as an example of how badly the US would take gayness, remember that whole scandal with that "Arthur" knockoff show, "Buster's Travels" or summat? That whole big deal on PBS when Buster went to the house of a person with 2 mothers? And how the show got PULLED off the air?

It just wouldn't work.

AS' only real requirement is for the show to be for adults. They've shown serious animations before. I think what happens is that a lot of adult western cartoons are satrical in nature.

And yeah, I think another problem would be have less to do with comedy and more to do withjust showing plain old romance stories. We don't see any straight romance stories on AS after all. I can see gay comedy/action cartoons on AS. Not fluffy romance. XD

It isn't going to happen anytime soon. Those channels have to pay huge amounts to the rights to pay-per-view out movies, and there is just no profit in it for them. What? 20-30 thousand yaoi fans is not a market. Yaoi is -not- as popular as it seems.

Yaoi is popular in the Anime Fan Circles and J-Fan's, but are those circles even popular themselves? maybe, Maybe, 1 in 30 kids like it now a days. It seems more popular than it is because anime fan's tend to be drawn to each other, and the same for yaoi fans. So when all your friends tend to be fans (not always) you feel like Yaoi's everywhere around you except in the stores and on tv like it should be.
