There are two events. One is in the Gaia Xmas 2006 forum and the other is found either on Towns or in the shops.
Caroling:
You can carol either in the Shops or on Towns. I haven't checked out Towns yet. You can carol in both Towns and the shops, but you can't interchange the carols between the two.
Shops:
In the shops, you must visit 10 NPCs. This will count as caroling. You must wait a minute or so between each carol.
When you've collected 10 carols, wait a bit and then visit the next NPC. You will then receive a gift.
There are 8 gifts to collect from caroling. ^___^
No need to go search for Santa on the world map. Instead, you'll find Jack who's demanding candy. x.x

Towns:
You walk around to different houses and carol by clicking the sheet music by the door. :3
You fill up a meter with every house you carol at.
I'm not sure what to do once the meter is full. ;P
Event Forum:
Pick up a gift from either the Gaian Santa or the Zurg Santa.
You then enter the forum and click the button under an avatar to give them a gift. You can only give one gift to each person.
You get items for giving people these 'gifts.' You don't get anything for receving the gifts~
You must wait 240 seconds between giving each gift. You also have to go back and pick up a new gift each time from one of the Santas.
There are Four items to collect in all from this event. ^___^ Two from Zurg Santa and Two from the Gaian Santa.

And!~ We can obtain gifts from the xmas event forum this year. It's rather glitchy at the moment and keeps telling me to wait when I haven't been able to do anything yet. D:
