[Personal] How to tell your parents you like yaoi

Okay, I need help on how to tell my parents I like seeing two guys either making out or having sex. I'm a 15 year old girl and I seriously have no idea how my parents will react. I'm sure my younger brother's reaction will be like "Eww. That's gross. Your stupid for liking that stuff." But you can't change a 13 year old.

I dunno if my mom knows what yaoi is or not. She came to an anime conventoin w/ me and I'm sure she saw people carrying around yaoi paddles and wondering what it was. So I'm sure she'll ask what yaoi is.

So I need help telling my parents about me liking yaoi. Like how to break it to them maybe without totally shocking them and maybe them thinking I'm gay or sumthin.

Not really sure how to help you out. Differs from case to case. It hard enough to give general guidelines, especially not when you don't really say much about your parents in general. Guess a starter would be to find out if they're rabidly homophobic. If they are, I really think it'd be best to keep it a secret.

(agrees) Yeah, see how homophobic they are... I think if they accept it as existing, then you should be good... even if they think it is disgusting, as long as they accept it you shouldn't have too many problems.

There is also the retrospect that one of them could be totally accepting and the other be absolutely disgusted by it, so you may only tell one of them to start. Considering this, if you're mom is more accepting, it is probably easier to tell her considering she is not a guy.

After you get a good idea of this, I would probably start lightly by saying things about two guys looking cute together, or something simple about the romance side of it all, after they've sunk that in, then perhaps you head up the bases.

This is probably the best thing you can do, I myself just sort of went up to them and said: Mom, Dad, brat, I am bisexual and like watching homosexual, to both genders, activities, especially that of an animated kind.

My mom and brother don't believe me (I don't know HOW, I dated a girl, own 18+ yaoi mangas, and have written 18+ for both... but what can you do?) and my dad could give a rat's arse less...

yeah, i kind of know how you feel. Last year, i told my parents that i was into yaoi. My parents have an okay attitude on that sort of thing, and it kind of happened by accident. I had brought Gravitation vol.2 to the dinner table, and of course was reading it, when i started laughing (it's funny!). My parents asked what i was reading and i blurted out the first thing that came to mind "i'm reading yaoi". My mom then came over and saw what i reading. Since then, it's been a long standing joke, and my parents are okay with it.

Its understanble to be nervous about telling them, I mean.....it's like getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar, lol. The best thing to do is just to tell them (if they're big homophobes....then, you might not want to right away...give it more time, you know, wait for the right moment). I'm not to sure if what i'm saying makes any real sense, but i hope it helps in some way.

My advice would be not to make a big deal out of it. I mean there's no need to sit them down and tell them because it just blows it out of proportion. Just leave something fairly tame lying around (manga or something) and wait till they ask you. Or just wait till something comes up in conversation (a film like Brokeback Mountain or something) that you can steer to it.

My parents are fine with it, they doin't understand the attraction but leave me to it all the same. They knew about fanfiction and when they asked me about it I explained about the slash side. wink

Agreed- is there any reason why you need to tell them? If not, I'd just keep quiet (ignorance is bliss, and all that). I'm sure my mother would be shocked to find some of the things her darling daughter read on the internet, and as far as writing my own stories... no way in hell is she going to read those. We have a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to what I write my stories about. XD

ok, i say wait for something to come up. My dad doesnt kno yet (i should tell him the next time we have a debate), but my mom. We were talking about how stupid, i think, boys are. Or maybe we were talking about double standards. I was saying how ppl think its wrong for a chick to like to boys making out and how somehow they're a lesbian. My mom was saying that guys making out is gross, but if u like it that doesnt make u a lesbian. then i said that i like watching guys make out. She made a face but then went serious again. She was cool with it and we continued our discussion.

So, bring up something like that and mention it as a way to get ur point across i guess.

How my sister found out was really funny tho.

She already knows I'm obsessed with yaoi.
But she doesn't know EXACTALLY what it is.
All she knows is that it deals with gay guys. lol.
I'm pretty sure if she actually saw the real deall...

I havent told mine yet, because i'm going to taekwondo summer camp in september, and I plan on asking her to buy me some yaoi manga to take with me. She'll buy it as long as she doesnt know what it is, haha.
