Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson VC, the Controller of the Royal Navy, summed up the opinion of the many in the Admiralty at the time when he said in 1901 "Submarines are underhand, unfair and damned un-English. The crews of all submarines captured should be treated as pirates and hanged."
In response Lieutenant Commander Max Horton first flew the Jolly Roger on return to port after sinking the German cruiser SMS Hela and the destroyer SMS S-116 in 1914.

Flying the Jolly Roger now seems to be a matter of pride amongst Submarine crews, though I do not know if it is just the Britons or if this is worldwide.

I'm getting a boat soon (a proper one that is, not like a crappy little paper boat). It's a Kestrel something or other sailing boat, and so I'm going to fly the Jolly Rodger whilst sailing down the CamXD We're hoping to sail it to Fowey in Cornwall and just generally around the place^_^

I've never been made walk the plank ... or even thrown off a boat. I used to sail a lot with my Dad, but I'm a fairly crap swimmer, so he didn't feel like pushing me in, apparently!

Wish someone had though. I can't swim, fair enough, but I can float damn it!
