Did you grow up in a place that accepted yaoi/yuri for the most part?
  Completely, yes
to an extent, but it varies between people
  Not sure
  No, not really

I grew up in South Louisiana. My family isn't from there, but that's where I grew up. When I was young, the internet was still a crazy dream, so I didn't get into the internet and discover yaoi until much later on. By the time I did, I was a freshman in college and didn't care who said what about it.

Of course, being the South, our gay marriage vote had no chance. They played anti-gay ads on the radio and it was just crazy, but by that time I had developed my own opinions and ideas. These days, I don't care who says boo to me. There's always going to be intolerant people in the world. I just prefer not to associate with people like that. I prefer to be nice and open minded and smack idiots. >_> Yep, that's me. ^_^

I'm from a small city in the north of Mexico and though the homosexual community is very large everything is kept as a secret of sorts.

People don't mind as long as you don't speak about it openly. Ignorance is bliss to most but with the constantly growing community and the development of the city things have begun to change slowly.

I'm not sure. I'm from Texas and I never really talk to other people about yaoi. I don't think to community would like but they wouldn't exactly smack me with Bibles or anything. I live in a city so there's a little more tolerance.

Well, yes, I'm living in a place where almost everyone is a homophobe. After I came out of the closet, I had quite a few close friends who abandoned me, so I pretty much stopped telling people, and hid my love of Yaoi and Yuri. Finally, I found someone else that liked Yaoi, and was also Bisexual, like myself, and so we clicked. And slowly but steadily, more tolerance has grown in our school. Now it's at a point where, if people don't like a persons sexual preference, then they usually just keep quiet.

I think that there's also a really bad connotation between liking yaoi, and christians slapping you with the bible. It's just not true. I mean, sure, there are probably a few people out there like that, But I have plenty of christian friends who, unless they're blind and can't see all my yaoi/yuri shirts, don't really mind it. I mean, I'm not christian, but I don't reallyu believe in harassing someone's religion, and calling them homophobes.
That would be called Stereotyping...which I also hate D:

And I think that was too long, off topic, and un-needed >_o; Sorry.

I live in Florida. The town's that used to be the headquarters for the KKK and the biggest Christian church down south.

....

I think that sums it up... stare

My closest friends and family have always accepted it. Being a decent orator I've even managed to get some homophobes on the right side of the track. Power of words, eh?
So to sum up, I've been lucky. No insults or beatings from close-minded dregs here!

I grew up in a place where mentioning the words 'anime' or 'manga' gets you confuzzled and "wtf is that"-looks. If I even tried to explain what shounen-ai/yaoi is, I'd probably be burned on the spot for being insane. xd

Netherlands, eh. ^_^ They're still cavemen. blaugh Although I must add, that the Netherlands is very, very tolerant towards homosexuality (great thing *nodnod*). But just imagine explaining anime and shounen-ai in one breath ("Japanese cartoons - you know, with those big eyes and everything (comprehensive look returned: "ooooh, I know! Like Pokemon!") - in which guys make out with each other and stuff").

Edit: They would accept it though. Just not understand. Not at all. ^_^

My area is very religous, so yaoi is pretty taboo there. sweatdrop That seems to make it more appealing. xd

Heh, I get a pretty good grab-bag of reponses when I reveal my love for boy/boy adorability. But people who have known my through high school either like it or don't really care one way or the other. My state is fairly conservative about such things, but people are generally pretty tolerant.

My college is highly tolerant, though! We're all about the free love. Damn hippies.

Everyone in my house knows I read yaoi and they don't have a problem with it at all. I even got one of my aunts to read one and the other one to look through one biggrin

meh. everyone thinks im crazy, but what the hell. im totally openly bi to everyone. but they see me as gay. x) anyways. im always being fangirly, but i havent gotten beat up yet! considering that i skipped a grade and im really small and wimpy for my age anyways, thats quite a feat. apparently i have an "attitude" that keeps people back. a look that says "I am going over there. I have no interest whatsoever in dealing with you. Now shut the ******** up about it."

People here in Wales tend to be pretty accepting of gays/lesbians, in a "so long as they don't hit on me" kind of way. As for yaoi, the people I've told about it think it's weird and slightly perverted to see a children's media (cartoons) being used to depict porn. It hasn't put me off though. smile

My area is split 50/50.

75% of the 13-21 population here is against it, 10% tolerates it, 10% like it, 5% are gay/les/bi. From 5-12, those who know about it's existence, most see nothing wrong with it, and some say it's gross just because love is gross... as for the 21-60 area, I think most of the people are tolerant, but you definetly get a few haters of anything REMOTELY gay... Most parents in this area are tolerant of it because alot of parents are just tolerant people, or have me and my friends as children and learned to tolerate it because we shove it in their faces and make them buy it for us for our Birthdays... I don't think we have any senior citizens where I live O_o how odd. The only old people I know are teachers, but teachers are all tolerant her... except Ms. Frey, but it's not about yaoi or yuri or anything gay in general... she just doesn't tolerate the opinions of her students quite a bit...

That was a long rambling... the conclusion to this was, most people here don't know it exists, but as they would probably have the same opinion on it as they do anything else about gay people. Which is about 50% haters/dislikers/not-really-tolerant and 50% lovers/likers/tolerant/gay/les/bi.
